Someone to have a lucid conversation with: Anyone just want to talk?

Long days (and nights) of repetitive questions and answers. Anyone just want to talk (and maybe laugh) about all this?

Welcome to the group, Paul. This is a terrific place to have found for answers, for venting, for solace, and yes, conversation, although I am pretty sure politics are frowned upon regardless of anyone’s opinion.
My husband with vascular dementia is a retired architect and although I was a practicing Attorney for 45 years, I was also his unspoken Executive Assistant🤣. So we just finished our latest home renovation of enclosing the second floor balcony off our bedroom which overlooks our pool with floor to ceiling windows and glass. I did all the planning and supervision work but Jim approved of the design and outcome. Since he was the architect and we were the general contractors on this original renovation changing my parents ranch home into a two story unique mini mansion 24 years ago, I miss the comraderie we shared in everything we did as now there is no meaningful conversation, just problem solving.
So talk away! We are in the beginning of Mardi Gras season here in New Orleans! We spent the day shopping for my “throws” Needed for my all female night parade on February 6 and buying kingcakes to ship to friends and relatives. My husband is 82 and I make 75 next week, not sure where all the time has passed so suddenly.
Keep talking as so many are here searching for company and will join the conversation along with and inspite of the lonely sorrow.

@boppi are you gonna tell us how many strands of beads you got and what you had to do to get them?

😉

Hahaha! No, I am riding in the parade and will be throwing beads, bracelets, balls, wands, bubble guns, and all sorts of fun light up things (it is s night parade) from float 17…soo much fun! Laissez le bon temps roullez! (Let the good times roll!) picture is from my daughter and my ride in Cleopatra Parade last year with and without wigs and headdress worn during our ride🤣

@boppi, what is the weather going to be like for you during this Mardi Gras celebration? Much of the country is being thrust into extreme cold temperatures which I know is much more problematic for southern states that aren't built for this kind of extreme cold.

@ocdogmom - you mentioned you "need to celebrate the positives and accept the losses." That is a powerful statement, is this something that needs constant affirmation as each day presents a different challenge?

Mardi Gras pretty much goes on despite the cold. Parades are postponed and resceduled for another day if there is hard rain or high winds due to parade rider safety concerns. Mardi Gras is early this year so if it is cold, we just bundle up and these crazy people just continue to party on🤣.

When I posted my need to celebrate the positives and accept the losses, I was sharing the insight that I have gained from being my husband's caregiver for over 5 years now. Everyday when I wake up, I have a choice to celebrate what my husband can still do that day ( and the fact that he is still here) and I also accept the fact that on that on any given day he will have lost the ability to do something he could do before. This daily attitude adjustment for me has helped me have realistic expectations of what is. It is a daily self care meditation for me.

What do you think Carl Jung has to say about the sad and unfortunate way so many people's lives seem to evolve into as they reach their "golden years"?
He seems a harsh, the little I know about him.

@paulgrover I do not necessarily agree with Jung regarding death, as I believe that we can't really conceive of what is after our human lives. His ideas about finding out about ourselves is pretty consistent throughout. I am currently working on figuring out all the parts of myself as I have many. Some due to survival skills coming from a dysfunctional family as well as being a recovering alcoholic/addict. I believe that starting to drink, etc., at age 12 stunted me, emotionally for sure. I look around and see people my age and they appear (my perception anyway) to be "grown ups." I still have an adolescent side that can be triggered but I am becoming aware of that part of myself.

I can’t laugh, as it’s going to drive me crazy ! Time after time, the same question, over and over, and over and over. How much of it can a person take ? ?

@dederickve, it sounds like you are at your wit's end. It can just grind you down to hear the same question or comment over and over. Answering the question seems futile.

In keeping with the topic of this discussion, what would YOU like to talk about today? What type of conversation stimulates your mind?

@dederickve I understand what you're going through. My wife is similar situation ask the same question over and over saying she can't hear me but it really she just can't comprehend what I say . It gets really frustrating sometimes and sometimes she gets angry at me and violent at times. She doesn't like her life but what do you do? I'm 75 and she's 8 years younger and it's really hard sometimes to think that she should have out lived me but you never know how long she'll last.

Yes! I am so lonely and it's an odd feeling since I don't live alone.
My husband just does what I call, 'report outs'. No conversation, just constantly telling me what he is about to do.
I miss actual conversation, stimulating discussions, intellectual conversations.
My husband watches cartoons now; not much exciting to share.
Heavy sigh, right?
I feel like when I do get to have an interesting chat with someone it's like a glass of water offered to a very thirsty person.
All the best to you.

@judimahoney I can relate to what you're saying. Amazing that you can remember things from years ago when she was child or early ages but yet now she doesn't realize or Walmart or Applebee's or any restaurant or anything is in town until she gets there.
