Prednisone for lung assistance

I have copd and shortness of breath it seems like all the time anymore. I was started on prednisone today after a trip to the er ugh. But I'm trying to locate another alternative to prednisone that I can take every day to control this issue along with taking trelegy every morning.

@jerdonus I don't have COPD, but I do have asthma, Bronchiectasis, and rheumatoid arthritis. I have been prescribed prednisone many times for lung or joint inflammation, but have resisted staying on it long-term. We always try to find a safer daily medication because it can cause osteoporosis, suppress the immune system, raise blood sugar, interact with other medications, and cause or exacerbate bleeding/bruising.

Has your doctor suggested other alternatives?

I take 10 mg daily to help with my breathing. I'm concerned about all the side effects but can't breathe without it. I have severe COPD so it probably doesn't matter in the long run. I have a feeling the medications I take do more harm than good...! I'm also a bit grouchy today!

@hellopam I have grouchy days too. I usually find some way to get over it . I took some of that 10 mg a day . I took it for thirteen days . Then cut the pills in half and took the halves for 24 days . Then later I was trying to get it to help me. I took 10 mg for 4 days. The headaches were so bad I stopped. Prednisone . There. I took 5mg of Prednisone, after a hospitalization for an exacerbation back in 2024. I was on that dose for about 8 weeks. I then cut back to 2.5mg for a couple of weeks and then I stopped. I haven’t used prednisone since 2024. I do have some on hand for an emergency.

I take mg daily. Helps a lot.
