What remedies help with post Covid cough?

Posted by gvstenst01 @gvstenst01, Dec 30, 2021

I'm three to four weeks past COVID and still have cough (during the day) I sleep ok without coughing. Lungs seem to be clear, the cough is more bronchial producing expectorant. Cough remedies (except honey) don't seem to work.

I have been coughing since January 8, 2022. been on the nebulizer five times a day. Doctor started me on Spiriva two weeks ago and the second day lost my voice. Yesterday I saw him, he took my off and referred me to an ENT and my doctor will see me in two weeks to see if my voice is back. If it is he will try Trelogy. If not we hope the ENT. He also took some exrays of my throat. my cough is dry and vicious! Now I am totally incontinent. So depressing, 71 yrs old and gained 45 pounds since January from the prednisone for nine months! Finally off of it!

For your throat issue, try gargling several times a day with about 1/2 cup warm water that has some salt (make it about as salty as ocean water), a teaspoon or two of apple cider vinegar, and if you can stand this part - a dash of cayenne pepper. If you can’t take the heat of this ingredient, omit it. Gaggle as deeply as you can allowing it to get very far back into your throat. Do not drink anything for at least a half hour afterward so that it stays on your throat. I got this tip from a professional singer who needed her throat and voice in top notch condition. Hope you get relief.

Hello @tchrart. Sorry to hear about your lingering cough. I wanted to connect you with other members who have experienced lingering coughing after COVID, so you will notice I have moved your post here:

Have you had any other viral infections such as cold/influenza that caused you additional symptoms since COVID? Did you have a cough at all during your initial COVID infection?

Had Covid end of October. Developed cough mid December that I still have. Most PCP’s say it could be change of weather or allergies.
Saw allergist who recommended Allegra D. Started taking this about 4 days ago and has helped me. Good luck!

i got what I assume is a light case of covid at the hospital for stomach condition. When I got home, I came down with a covid. on Jan. 8th. tested negative but hubby had it for 20 days tested negative but we had all the symptoms. I went to my MD and he gave me Zpack and Prednisone. but nothing helped me cough. I just went to get tested at a Pulmonary specialist. Still waiting for results. I use albuterol puffer for some relief but I still cough so hard that a practically pass out and have become incontinent. I have an appointment with my MD in two weeks to go over the reports of the pulmonary specialist and go from there! I am frightened for I am in a mind fog and have lost all balance. I have not slept in my bed for months. Spend sleepless nights and live off Niquil!! I am praying for you and praying for answers! I am 71 and have gained mass weight from this! We must stay positive and trust in our Lord!

Hi Pat12950,

I was ready to give up after especially reading that others are suffering with a cough that won’t go away after Covid-19. But you reminded me and I hope others who are believers that we must trust in the Lord. When I read this in your message, it quickened my spirit and reinvigorated my hope. Yes it’s 2:31 a.m. in the morning, and yes I’m still coughing my head off—-but I can stop reading now and remember where my help lies. It lies in the Lord! I’m praying for you and many others who are suffering from long term Covid coughing. I’m believing by faith I will be healed and you will be too. Just be diligent, pray, seek wise counsel (doctors, medical providers, etc.) but don’t leave God out of the equation. He is the great healer!

Thank you for this recipe. It has helped me greatly.
The cayenne doesn't have to burn to help. I use only a speck.
I add 2 oz. of cold water, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. cider vinegar, and a speck of cayenne to a 5 oz. glass and give it a stir. I microwave the solution on high for 10 sec. before gargling. Relief is immediate due largely, I believe, to the numbing effects of even such a small amount of cayenne.
