What remedies help with post Covid cough?

Posted by gvstenst01 @gvstenst01, Dec 30, 2021

I'm three to four weeks past COVID and still have cough (during the day) I sleep ok without coughing. Lungs seem to be clear, the cough is more bronchial producing expectorant. Cough remedies (except honey) don't seem to work.

Thank you! I quit the Niquil and tried one Hydrocodone and two Tylenol Pm at bedtime. That helped more. I am still relying on my Albuterol to help through the night and day. I am going to the ER per my Practitioner tomorrow morning so I can get a Chest CT. On Monday my Doctor will have the results of the CT Scan and the Pulmonary Function test with the specialists remarks. Hope we will have some answers! I am continuing the Tessalon prescription and pray that it will kick in! I will mention the muscle relaxant idea too! Thank you so much!!

Good! I remember waiting out the d%!m six weeks and disbelieving the coughing would ever stop. But it did, during the sixth week no less, lol.

I will add that I was doing acupuncture for something else and the acupuncturist worked in the cough reflex so that might have helped.

even while my daughter was IN the hospital for covid pneumonia she never received any antibiotics! the main treatment was oxygen and steroids.

I had covid pneumonia and was given a tapering dose of steroids, doxicycline antibiotic, albuterol breathing treatment via a nebulizer, Mucinex and I also had an inhaler for acute breathing issues. I developed asthma after covid pneumonia. But that's how I was treated for Covid pneumonia. All together I was sick for 4 months and have a host of other problems due to covid.

Sorry you went through this. I had something similar though before whole covid i end up somehow with fungal pna in 2019, was on anti fungal therapy treatment for 3 months. Cough never went away even with inhalers, so thats when pulm md did tests and i was dx with asthma in 2020 at age of 44. Now two years i am finally accepting that i have asthma and i need to take inhalers as maintenance otherwise my disbelief and non compliance backfires at me and i need oral steroids. I had covid end of April 2022 and i end up with infiltrates in both low lobes. Initially bad cough was treated with doxy. Then my o2 was dropping and round of dexamethasone and azythromyacin. Lots of inhaler, initially every 3-4 hrsto help with breathing : both albuterol and atrovent. It was pretty intense and challenging. O2 at home. I was also doing acupuncture, cupping and herbs and still try to keep going. Massage also helpled along the way if you find massage therapist who knows how to release diaphragm muscles and intercostals from being so sore and painful from cough

I had a pulmonary trifecta (influenza B, mycoplasma pneumonia and whopping cough identified by antibody blood tests only after the fact) after getting too cold and wet, too many times, sailing a Great Lake in October.

I wish I'd tried massage as that might have helped me heal faster. I do know that years of deep breathing exercises before this helped a lot. The pulmonologist could find no residual scar tissue and the lung function test result was excellent. As an ex-smoker, that was surprising but I thought it confirmed the benefits of yoga exercises designed to use more of our lung capacity than we usually do. There's a lot of good instruction on YouTube to help using more lung capacity. I found some that helped calm cough reflex as well when I was first healing from the trifecta

There are so many that I don't know which to recommend as I've kind of learned the stuff and do it on my own now. It's a little time-consuming but best if you search them on your own as some are designed to address specific issues. For example, when covid hit, I looked up videos for exercises specifically using 'the bottom' of the lungs as it seemed from articles that people with a diminished usage of lung capacity (not diminished capacity, but diminished usage) were having the worst results and then ending up on respirators and things went downhill fast.

So friends and I were all doing deep-deep breathing exercises to try to achieve maximum use of lung capacity.

If you even start with simplest yoga, paced deep breathing and go on from there, that's the big first step. I find that I get what I think of as 'air hungry after a few minutes of doing that and breathe more deeply, automatically, for hours after. Shallow (diaphragm breathing) just feels wrong. There are also videos using inexpensive breathing-aid gadgets that might be helpful.

It's always best to check with your doctor before trying anything that's not easy or can interfere with any condition including blood pressure though.

All the symptoms I had are gone except a lingering dry cough which is very bothersome and am reluctant to even return to work becoz of that. Been coughing for a month now.No end in sight. Does anyone know of any remedy for a lingering Covid 19 cough ?

I was wondering if you are still having a cough? Did you find anything that worked? I have had the cough for 8 months now and it is affecting my life.

Hi there,
I've had a post Covid dry cough for the past 3 months and it has been brutal with body shaking coughs. I was doing all the vitamins, honey, cool mists, and cardio but nothing seemed to help. I was finally able to see a pulmonologist and he said my lungs were in great shape but that they were still inflamed from the virus. I asked him if there was anything he could offer to help as it was affecting my quality of life. He put me on a steroid inhaler called Flovent and in a matter of days my cough is about 90% gone. I'm only 5 days in with it but I am sleeping for the first time in 3 months and have a new found sense of relief. I also get infrared light therapy on my body and acupuncture, but hands down it was the Flovent that was life changing. I hope this remedy continues and my lungs continue to heal so I can get back to my active life with my family and kids. I hope you find relief very soon as I know how debilitating this cough is......

On September 2, 2021, I was hospitalized with a severe case of Covid and came very close to dying. I was hospitalized for almost 4 months. Since I've been home I've been on oxygen 24/7. I'm finally down to 3 liters of oxygen, which is great progress since I started at 12 liters when I left the hospital. I've had post Covid syndrome for the past 11 months and have had a cough issue since day one of Covid. I've learned a few things about this cough since I first got Covid. For myself, I've learned that Covid damaged my sinuses so I have chronic sinusitis and post nasal drip. This causes me to cough.. a lot.. all day and night. Taking antihistamines every day helps. I also keep cough drops and Robitussin DM cough syrup close at hand. I use those frequently when I get into a coughing phase which can last for days. I also take Mucus Relief DM every 4 hours as needed. All of that has helped me gain some control over this nasty post Covid cough. I've also learned that hot humid days cause my sinus issues and cough to flare up so I'm especially careful to be sure to take my antihistamines and Mucus Relief DM pills regularly on those kind of days. I still cough daily but it's more of a clearing my throat kind of thing.. just one or 2 small coughs helps. I always have cough drops close by and I take my antihistimines and Mucus Relief DM pills faithfully every day. I can still have severe coughing to the point of vomiting at times, but that's getting less and less because I've learned what helps me. I buy all my stuff on Amazon so I get decent prices. I get Luden's cherry cough drops and the Mucus Relief DM pills and Amazon brand Tussin DM Max cough syrup from Amazon. I buy a lot of this stuff but it works for me if I'm consistent with it. I also do a sinus rinse every few days, especially on bad days. I get Ayr Saline Nasal Rinse Kit (Amazon) and have a nebulizer I use to get moisture into my sinuses. I know all of this sounds like a lot but it's been the only things that work to keep me cough free, for the most part. I'm usually cough free while sleeping although I do wake up in the middle of the night coughing sometimes but I rarely feel like I'm "coughing up a lung" anymore, thank God! The cough drops (only 10 calories each!) really help soothe my throat and keeping hydrated helps. I think I've permanently damaged my vocal chords and now live with a very hoarse voice every day.

I know this sounds like a lot of work and that I single handedly support Amazon, but at least I can go days barely coughing now. I use Amazon because they deliver and I rarely get out due to being on oxygen and having other post Covid complications. I don't like buying from big Corporate America companies but I do what works for me now and Amazon has very reasonable prices. I'm on Social Security and I go through a lot of this over the counter stuff so I'm down to doing what works best for me.

Covid went through my body like a hurricaine and did tremendous damage to several organs in my poor old body (I'm 71). I'm fighting multiple battles every day and coughing is just one of those battles. But I'm thrilled to have some semblance of control over that constant cough! That's one less thing I have to try to figure out so I can conserve my energy for other battles to survive this nasty Covid stuff. I've decided this sinus/cough issue is part of the permanent damage in me from Covid so I'm treating it accordingly. I hope some of this will help you and you start doing better soon!

Another suggestion: get one of those incentive spirometers that hospitals give the patients. I have one and am using it. It seems to increase my lung capacity.
