MRSA was found in my sputum

Posted by natalee_43 @natalee_43, Mon, Jul 8 2:24pm

Hello, I had recently had gotten my mucus tested because I would get a whole bunch of green mucus in the back of my throat that would be very thick. The test results came back with MRSA my doctor is putting me on antibiotics but wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this or know what is happening in my body.

Hi @natalee_43 – It must have been really scary to get those results. I'm wondering if you may find others with more similar experience in one of the groups. Here is a thread that might be useful. https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mycobacterium-avium-complex-pulmonary-disease-macmai/?pg=530#comment-296549 Meantime, are you seeing your primary care physician or a specialist? How long is your course of antibiotics?

Hello @natalee_43

I would also like to invite, Teri, @windwalker, to talk with you regarding this new problem of MRSA in your sputum. Teri is a volunteer mentor on Connect and she has had a lot of personal experience with infections similar to this and may be able to offer some suggestions.

I'm wondering, @natalee_43 if you also have a cough with this problem? What type of antibiotics did your doctor give you? Are you scheduled to see a pulmonary specialist?

@natalee_43 Hi Natalee that is scary for sure. I had MRSA in my leg after my by.pass surgery . The Dr. had a hard time finding the right antibiotic. As it turned out he ended up putting my on Bactrum but find a pulmonary specialist to help you if you don't have one now.

Hi @natalee_43 you may have noticed I moved your post to the MAC & Bronchiectasis discussion so that you post will be seen by others with similar experience.

I also wanted to share this other discussion on MRSA in hopes you could find some valuable and helpful information in it.

Natalee.….. When I went to Mayo's first time, one of the bacteria in my sputum sample was MRSA also. I believe it's quite different in your lungs than in blood or skin. It wasn't hard to remove. Most of the time since then (four years ago) it hasn't shown back up.
Believe me, it's much easier than pseudomonas — which I'm dealing with now and have been for quite a while

Hi Natalee. I am glad that members who have personally experienced having MRSA have responded to you. I have never had it. That had to be scary getting that news. Jan said she had it and it was easily treatable for her. I hope the same holds true for you. All of us respond differently to these various bugs and the treatments. For example: my pseudomonas was gone in 30 days, but for Jan and a few other people, the battle is on-going. I am glad that you found this group, and I hope that you take the time to read over past posts and also scroll thru the topics on our discussion board. Please keep me posted on your progress in fighting the mrsa. I will be sending healing thoughts your way. Are you nebulizing with 7% saline by any chance?

I am just put on Levofloxacin 750 mg for 10 days. I have read about awful side effects. How was it for you?

sylvermoon8…… Hi — I'm Jan and I just wanted to say MRSA was the first bacteria I was treated for. Levofloxacin did a good job. The 750 is the largest dosage I'm aware of, and I had a little trouble with side effects from that but when they moved it to 500 I breezed through it. So….. I've taken it more than once through the years (500) and it hasn't been a problem. "If" you are unhappy with the 750, you might consider asking for the 500. Made a big difference for me. Don't worry — MRSA was easily eradicated. It sounded scary to me but I learned it's not.
