Meningioma: Anyone else? I'm frightened

Posted by pixie49247 @pixie49247, May 12, 2023

I just found out I have a Meningioma tumor from a MRI I had for something else. Doctor said they are almost always benign and am going to get an appointment with a neurologist. Anyone else have one of these. I’m getting very frightened now.

@staywell: A small meningioma, not pressing into the brain, is nothing to worry about for now. It can grow, so keep track of it... or it can stay the same, or recede.

But, did you break anything when you fell? Most important is getting better from what sounds like a terrible accident!. Janelaine

@janeelaine Yes, I broke my right shoulder. It was God awful. Went to three orthopedic docs and all three said I should just let it heal and not replace. So, that's what I did and Im so thankful to God that it did heal beautifully. It took about 8 months to a year of PT for me to function normally again but I am back to normal. Let's pray the M stays the same or recedes. My husband died of a glioblastoma 7 years ago and that's my biggest fear from the radio surgery. He had gamma ray surgery about 10 years before he died for an AVM they found in his brain. The neurosurgeons believe the gamma rays caused the glioblastoma. What is the liklehood that two people living in the same house both got tumors in the brain? It makes you wonder. Docs don't have answers only try to help you live as long as you can comfortably.

@edeval4 ... ironically, I also recently suffered from a fall, and a broken right shoulder. I agree that it was...is awful! The fall was last November. Now, in March, I do not have complete range of motion. It still hurts. Your note gives me hope that continuing PT will allow me tp "heal beautifully"!
It is sobering that your neurosurgeons think that your husband's gamma ray treatment for meningioma may have caused his glioblastoma! I am scheduled for gamma ray surgery in April for a meningioma, which is pressing on my frontal lobe. Did the Neurosurgeons site other cases where a glioblastoma occurred following radiologic intervention? Or, were they just 'musing'?

@janeelaine The shoulder took a very long time to get full range of motion or at least 90%. I did take vitamin K and D3 during the healing and still do but not as frequently. They say K heals bones. It's only been 4 months healing for you. You have some time before you feel it improving. I practiced putting my arm up onto my steering wheel in my car and pushing the gear shift. It was so painful at 4 months but I was motivated to drive again. I would say at 8 months I felt like I could do so much more. Yes, unfortunately, two neurosurgeons from Weill Cornell NY Presbyterian in NYC said his glioblatoma was probably caused by the gamma ray. It is a side effect they told him but they were surprised that it grew so quickly in ten years. They said if it happens(doesn't always happen so have faith) you would see a glioblastoma over 15-20 years. Believe me, I really considered and weighed my options before radio surgery bc of what he went through but I am 69 now. I really didn't want to go through brain surgery. They felt confident enough bc its size is small that they could prevent it from growing anymore. I got more than one opinion from a neurosurgeon and they all felt the same way so I went with it. We have to pray to God that everything will be okay and just monitor it. My prayers go out to you that the gamma ray will be successful and you won't have to stress over this. I try not to think about it during the year, only when it's time for the MRI do I get anxious. We have to live the best lives we can in the meantime.
