Has anyone tried Algae Cal?
I’m getting off Fosamax and I want to go a different route on handling my Osteopenia. Several of the Doc supported routes have issues with my health and I want to get off of them!

@pajamas7038 I hear mixed reviews on AlgaeCal.

@pajamas7038 Thanks. I have been Osteopenia for years and nobody has ever mentioned anything to take. Irritates me that they want to wait until osteoporosis. I have heard not great things about Fosamax and I don't want to start it either.

Honestly, I’m just getting started down this path and probably don’t know which to choose. I’m in the fact finding phase. So many ads and no way to know if anything is true.
I’m hoping to find real people with real success.
Have your numbers improved?

@pajamas7038 I am with you. I have been in osteopenia for awhile but finally getting just one point away from osteoporosis in spine. My numbers jumped big which took me by surprise.

@gently - I agree that we have to research well and be discerning at a time when a population is now trying to figure out what we should of/could of done to stay on the preventative side of bone deterioration. Both of my daughters are now well informed so they are not caught off-guard and they've requested and received early DXA scans b/c of my OP diagnosis.

After much research, I told a friend who didn't want to go on Fosamax about strontium citrate. At the end of one year, she went from OP in her hips to barely osteopenia (almost in the Normal range). Now that I'm off of Evenity, I am also taking SC as well as HRT. My friend did not take any HRT. I had started HRT a few months before the last Evenity injection.

@singingbones I really wish someone had been more proactive on putting me on HRT patch, cream or gel even when they thought it was dangerous to do that. Now, alot has changed and I am 69 and probably too old. Irritates me that physicians should be trying patients on estrogen to see how they do. I understand everyone can't do it, but it would have saved me some years. I will look into strontium citrate.

I tried using just supplements but it didn't work; in fact, I got worse. My Dexa scan showed a severe deterioration despite using supplements with exercise etc. I was 69 by this point. I feel I lost valuable time relying on just supplements instead of seeing a specialist and getting prescription treatment. My mother had multiple fractures in her 80s and was on narcotics for a spinal fracture for the last year of her life. I don't want that to happen to me. I'm built like her. My Dexa scan results are actually worse than hers were.

I use Citracal Max Plus which has Vit D and all of the other minerals in it.

I've been told by multiple doctors that supplements will not rebuild bone. They will only help to maintain what's there. If you have osteopenia or maybe mild osteoporosis, you might "get away with" using supplements for a time...but you might be only delaying the inevitable. It's hard to say. A friend of mine has mild osteoporosis in her hip and was able to maintain with 1500 mg of calcium every day (and exercise), but I don't know what her most recent results show.

It depends on the person. If your body is actively losing bone, then supplements will not treat that process.

I don't know if many people on this blog understand that there are several underlying causes of bone loss which supplements cannot treat. I'm glad I finally went to a specialist because she did a workup of causes. For example, celiac disease, parathyroid hormone and autoimmune disorders can be associated with osteoporosis. I did learn that I have an abnormal protein called an M protein in my blood. I had to get a further workup for this by oncology.

So, treating yourself with just supplements may not be the best choice for you. You will not rebuild bone and may even have a severe deterioration. You may have underlying disorders that are exacerbating the bone loss. I regret not going to a specialist when I was first diagnosed with mild osteoporosis. Like I said, it does depend on the person. It depends on your family history, etc.

@followheart87 Which specialist? Endocrinologist? I do have Hashimoto's and wonder if that could be a problem.

If you do choose medication, the current thinking is to start with a bone builder/anabolic.
Sequencing matters with these drugs.

@gravity3
Are bone builders/anabolics only prescribed for people with more severe bone loss? Or does insurance only cover them for a certain degree of bone loss? I am not at the point of needing medication yet, but trying to educate myself on all this now. My sisters were prescribed Fosomax, which I know is not an anabolic. I have heard that before: You want to go on a bone builder first. However, I’m guessing not everyone gets to participate in that recommendation based on their degree of bone loss and insurance coverage. Can you shed some light on this?

@cliffdweller

I started osteoporosis drugs quite a while ago and they started me on alendronate/fosomax. I didn't know anything at that time. And, yes, I am hearing from others that insurance may be a prime driver in continuing this practice even though for most of us an anabolic would be preferred.

I absolutely hate that insurance companies are playing doctor. We women have powerful voices. Let's use them for this too!

@laren3 How much do you do? I used to be in a gym but over past 3-4 years I have had gluteal tendinopathy keeping me from exercising. I have osteopenia but on the edge of osteoporosis. I think I can handle hand weights but wondering how much to do daily. I have resistance bands but irritate my tendons. Just curious.
