@cliffdweller - I don't know how the insurance companies make their decisions or how the drs propose the need for the bone meds, but here's my experience:
No dr ever, ever pointed out over the yrs that I had osteopenia that eventually moved into the osteoporosis range. An endocrinologist who was seeing me for the first time for thyroid nodules was reviewing my heath chart (same medical group) & asked if anyone had ever addressed my OP scores. Nope! So I made another appt w/her (HMO Medicare ins, so had to go thru my PCP first) to discuss the scores: spine -3.5; hips both -2.8 & recommended meds.
She requested Evenity and there was no push-back or hesitation from the ins company. I even asked to change drs before I started the Evenity course so that the injections could be done at a location closer to my home. Again, no hesitation from the ins company even though I had a new prescribing dr.

It is absolute insanity! I inquired about entity and my insurance company said oh no you’re going to have to jump through these other eight hoops first. 😡

1 ReactionHas anyone tried OsteoMD supplements? I’ve been researching supplements and this one was created by Rheumatologists.
@singingbones
Congratulations that is an amazing improvement. Hips are notoriously difficult to increase, so a 6.6% increase is fantastic! Do you mind letting us know your T-scores?
@roseincalifornia - spine went from -3.5 to 1.0; hips (both) went from -2.8 to -1.9. The dr gave me the percentages, so I took her word for it. My DXA included a TBS score for the first time that showed me to be in the 'Normal' range for bone quality. My OP DXA numbers were from 2024 & I didn't begin to address bone health until mid 2025. A lot can be accomplished in one year!
I suspect some of increase came from 8-mo of participating in a Liftmor-type exercise class, but the dr credits Evenity b/c it's somewhat more measurable & predictable. The fact that my spine increased beyond the predicted range, I credit all my hard work, too!!!
~singingbones in California, too!

5 Reactions@loyd1957, I tried AlgaeCal Plus, but did not use it long enough to know if it delivers what its marketing message says. I stopped, not because I have no confidence in AlgaeCal Plus. In fact, I switched to a similar algae-based calcium product --Swanson's Sea Minerals: Red Marine Algae (270 mg/tablet), which does not have Vit D or K2 in it. I want to be able to control how much calcium I take on a day-to-day basis based on what I plan to eat that day. I am taking Vitamin D3 separately (so I can choose the dosage I need), Vit K2 in separate tablets--MK-4 and MK-7 ( I want to take both MK-4 and 7, but have not found a tablet that contains both and does not contain calcium), Vit C, Magnesium Glycinate, and PerfectAmino for protein. I agree that these are too many separate supplements, but I don't mind because I like the ability to choose dosages. I have baseline info on my bone markers (CTX of 241 and P1NP of 34.5), as well as Calcium and Vit D levels (all normal), and have my REMS and DEXA results (osteoporotic with low fracture risk). I will let you know if my approach works. I am no longer on any osteoporosis medication--I was on alendronate for 11.5 years with drug holidays and none of my doctors noticed (!). My doctor subsequently switched me to Tymlos with disastrous side effects, including losing my ability to walk. It was only when this happened did he stop me from taking the injections. I was asking him to allow me to titrate but he refused. My experience with my no-longer doctor taught me that I need to be an advocate for my own health. I am now co-managing my osteoporosis with an endocrinologist who respects my views. I am now trying supplements, diet, and Onero. Since I started Onero and these supplements last April 2026, I am now able to deadlift a 52.5- lb barbell, do back squats with a 42-lb barbell, and row with a 42.5 lb weight. By the way, I am 73 years old, I weigh 90 lbs, and was diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2003.

1 Reaction@yds - I also took AlgaeCal for a short time at the recommendation of one of my drs. It gave me loose stools...most likely the kind of magnesium they used...who knows? The company refunded my purchase & now I take a trace minerals product that excludes Magnesium, Calcium, Vit K, Vit D & Vit C so that I can choose my own type & dose. I also took MK-4 for a while when I was transitioning from the Evenity bone drug to HRT.
Way to go on the Onero exercises! My weights were not quite as impressive, but it is amazing what our 73-yr old bodies can do!
Can't believe no one noticed how long you were on alendronate. But no one noticed that my DXA 23 yrs ago indicated osteopenia in the spine. The truncated reports said "normal" for my age. Prevention would have been helpful

1 Reaction@singingbones, I am glad to hear that you're doing weights too. I think resistance training is going to help us. Our respective experience tell us that we need to educate ourselves, be our own advocates, and always remain vigilant. My oncologist will not allow me to take HRT because I had breast cancer in 2000, and the accompanying rapid loss of estrogen led to my osteoporosis. I can't take Evenity or any of the drugs that increase the risk for vascular diseases (Evista, Duavee) because of a strong family history of vascular disease. I can no longer take any of the antiresorptive medicine because of my 11.5 years of being on alendronate, and Tymlos resulted gave me such bad side effects that I no longer want to go back to it or even try Forteo. I won't do Prolia because I have no exit strategy for it. Thus, I am hoping my approach will keep me active and fracture-free (I have no illusion of totally reversing my osteoporosis).
