Lodging transplant patients

Posted by jeaniecm @jeaniecm, May 14, 2019

I will be having a SCT at Mayo in Rochester The transplant will be outpatient so I will need an apartment for my husband and me during a 6 week stay. I would like information from others who have had extended stay, The two places I’m considering is Charter House and Broadway Plaza

We stayed for 2 weeks at Broadway Plaza and really liked it. I liked having 2 bathrooms, a full size fridge and washer dryer. My husband liked that they brought him AV cords so he could use 1 of the tv's as a computer screen for work.
Its a couple blocks walk to Mayo outside and also accessible by sky bridge. Its near the library, a great international store & a mall.

We rented a house through AirBNB for recovery from my kidney transplant. There were a few people staying to help with my daughter and me, however. They do have smaller places like apts in homes etc, a variety.

@jeaniecm, Welcome to Mayo Connect. I want to thank you for presenting this question about lodging during treatment for Stem Cell Transplant.

My husband and I spent 11 weeks in Rochester and we stayed at the Gift of Life House. I was in and out of hospital prior to my liver/kidney transplant and the GOL provided us with a safe and supportive enviroment both before, during, after my transplant. Since we were nearly 800 miles from out home and friends, we cherished the homelike atmosphere and the interaction with other patients who just like us. At first, I was hesitant because I had preconceived ideas about a low cost facility, but I was completely wrong. GOL is a top of the line place to stay. And is available to transplant patients for return visits, too. There is a shuttle that is convenient for back and forth trips to the clinic/hospital with door-to-door service. When I visited there a couple of weeks ago, there was a couple who were checking in for the husband's 6 week SCT.

I hope that you and your husband will find the lodging that works best for you.
I send you my thoughts and prayers for a routine procedure and recovery. I invite you to come back and share your experience.

I agree with @rosemarya on the benefits of staying at the Gift of Life Transplant House. Even if you only spend a few weeks there it will provide an environment that is perfect for recovery. The Gift of Life facilities are cleaned with transplant patients in mind so they are far safer than hotels and apartments. Shuttles are available for transport to the hospital, stores, etc. even bloodwork can sometimes be arranged so you don't have to go to the lab. It is also a great place to meet other people who are going through the same things you are so it has a built in support system. Laundry and kitchen facilities are provided right on site so you have pretty much everything you need while you recover. Best of luck with your upcoming visit.

My husband had a liver transplant at Rochester last June, 2018. We also stayed at Gift of Life Transplant House. It was a wonderful place to stay. We also stay there when my husband has his checkups. He has his annual checkup in June and we reserved our two night stay awhile back. Great place.

Is there anything available in Phoenix? They do have the Help n Healing Home at $ 50.00 per night for a one bedroom unit with a sleeper sofa and a shared kitchen for 4 units. I will be there 6 weeks and the bill will mount quickly (plus it does not sound good for my caretaker). When I'm in the early stages of recovery – I'd like a full unit w/kitchen and 2 queen beds for more privacy.

There is a place in phoenix when i had my transplant my wife took a tour and really liked it but they were so full we ended up staying at a hotel. Luckily my insurance paid for a hotel up to 5000 so we did ok. But the place near Mayo itself i got the impression was cheaper than that. And there are strick rules about using the kitchen and quiet times which my wife actually liked. But depending on the time of the year Phoenix can be expensive. I had my transplant in Jan and we stayed at the hotel until February. Hotels that time of the year can run for a nice one 200 a night. But if its soon summer is pretty cheap and there are some nice hotels right near the property. We like a place called Cambria only a few miles away and it was less than a hundred. In the middle of summer you can find awesome deals for around 70 a night. Good luck

Thank You. The "Healing Home" is $ 50.00 per night (one Room with a 4 unit shared kitchen). It's usually full and I need to stay 6 weeks. I found the Town Place Suites (By Marriott) on Shea Blvd and called directly and spoke with KIM. She was able to give me the "Help in Healing" Mayo rate of $ 90.00 per night (Tax, Internet and full breakfast included). This is a 2 Bedroom unit – One Bath and a full kitchen. I found it very quiet in the past and this will be my fallback. Kim will upgrade you to these units if at all possible and you Must be a MAYO patient.

Yes i did forget to mention that The Social workers have a list of hotels that give a Mayo Clinic rate. But also ask the hotel because the one i stayed in was not on the list and they gave me a Mayo rate. One other thing i might mention. The holiday inn express also help me get breakfast by preparing a plate in the kitchen for me since we can't eat at buffet.

I was in Rochester for 5 weeks after my transplant and stayed down by Soldier Field at Centerstone Plaza. Efficiency apts. so you can cut down on your meal costs. Twigs restaurant is part of the complex and you are only blocks from a great food coop where you can get takeout or buy groceries. Free transportation from there to anywhere in town. And it’s close enough to the clinic you can walk if you want.

Hello, We now always stay at Charter House for any Mayo visits. We realky like it and were never disappointed . It is just a short skyway walk to Mayo and Charlton building is right there so no need to walk outside or depend on tranport. I don't know for sure but they can give good rates for longer stay for Mayo transplant patients. Worth a inquiry there. We were introduced to Mayo for my son's Liver transplant that was in Jacksonville but we go to Rochester for any treatment that my husband needs now.

After looking at our options we are thinking the Charter House would be best for us, we have seen pictures but unable to view in person. Wondering if it is nice accommodations? The pictures looked like the furnishings were nice am I correct? Also have you eaten there? My husband isn’t “much of a cook” and I was thinking it would be nice to use their dining room. Thanks
