Diagnosed with SVT and want to talk with others

Posted by jennybell1 @jennybell1, Jan 24, 2016

I was just diagnosed with SVT and can't seem to find any discussions with regards to that diagnosis. It was suggested by my cardiologist to visit this site for information. Anyone able to help point me in the right direction as the search engine comes up with "no results".
TIA

Hi @jennybell1,
Welcome to Connect. There's an older discussion about tachycardia treatment here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/flecainide-and-digoxin-drug-for-tachycardia/ If you post on the thread, you may be able to re-ignite the conversation with @laurenstedman, @topaz and @useless.

Welcome back @martishka. Thanks for answering my shout out to you. I'm sure that @jennybell1 will appreciate too.

I was re-reading the discussion you had with @calamityjane https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/ventricular-tachycardia/
Can you believe it's been 4 years to the month that you were writing about SVT on this forum? Would love to get an update on how you're managing SVT and afib these days? What concerns you may have and what helps?

HI,
I had a 5th ablation about 3 years ago- this one was a Pulmonary Vein Ablation and I have been fine since then. I had several rhythm problems- Afib, SVT and Atrial Flutter. I haven't had an event since that ablation!
Hi to all,
I'm a retired engineer in Montana. I've lived with SVT for about 8 years and had one unsuccessful ablation attempt about a year ago. I was unaware that there is more than one type of ablation procedure - could someone explain the different types? Thanks

Hello, I started having ablations about 15 years ago. And my last one was 3 years ago. The "regular" ablation is where they went in through the groin, "mapped" the heart, looking for the site of the SVT and then ablate it. Although, for a variety of reasons they were unsuccessful. During the course of these ablations I developed AFib. 3 years ago my situation became unmanageable with meds. That's when they did the Pulmonary Vein Ablation. My understanding is that it is for AFib but it could be for SVT as well. You are asleep for this one and it is more extensive/ The premise is that the rhythm is being triggered in one of the Pulmonary veins, not in the heart. So they ablate all around each vein and I think the atria as well. It is through the groin as well and in my case, it was successful. I haven't had an episode of any kind since the PVA and I am off all the meds that were used to try and control it. Hope that helps.

That's an amazing success story after having suffered with this for some 12 years! Thanks for the info - my doc has mentioned AFIB to me in explaining why the first ablation didn't work - couldn't simulate the condition, etc. I'll discuss with her at the next appt.

Hi Colleen,

Thank you for leading me to those people/threads.
I am booked for an ECHO and Stress test on Feb 4 just to confirm that my
actual heart is healthy in light of this issue.
I have been put on a low dose of Bisoprolol and have been advised to change
my diet (no caffiene, increase water intake etc).

Not sure how much this will all help as Im sure most of this is due to
stress and unfortunately it is not something I can change or atleast not
for another 7 years.

Thank you for your help!
I have heard so many comments about how ppl regret their ablations. That hasn't even been discussed with me, but just the thought if it scares me bc you are the first person who had any luck with it. I keep hearing about further issues that arise bc of the ablation. I don't know if I could do it. This SVT is scary enough. Not sure I could handle more being added to it.
Does anyone get chest pains randomly (even when you don't think your having an episode)?
