I discovered new technique to nebulize, encourages sputum removal

Posted by healthybon @healthybon, Sep 4, 2023

I tried something new tonight..maybe this could help some people.
So, I nebulize with the 7% saline twice a day.
Tonight, I breathed it in, held it for a couple seconds, blew it out, but kept blowing, blowing, blowing out (through pursed lips).. until I couldn't blow out any more. It seemed to have reached maybe the lower part of my lungs. The sputum was copious!
So. breathe in.....hold a couple seconds,.....breathe out....out out out out..............(pursed lips ) out through your mouth!
Try it........it worked for me!
Additonally, when I do the Autogenic Breathing using the App, I do the same thing when blowing out. I breathe in through my nose, then breathe out through my mouth...out, out , out til I can't anymore. It really shakes up the sputum down under I think.... Hope it will help you too! Bon

I’ll try it. It makes sense if you’ve used the Autogenic Drainage Ap, which requires you to breathe out long and slow. The AG ap is my last resort when I’m coughing at bedtime; really gets tons of mucus out.

Scoop! You are the best. Thank you for the video link. It is going to be SO helpful. As for the AD app, I have tried getting it on a number of occasions and, unfortunately, it does not appear to be available for android phones. The straw technique piqued my interest because that is one of the techniques taught to me by my vocal coach... to sing scales through a straw. I guess it is all connected and I feel my voice exercises are not only strengthening my voice but there is a bonus factor of it strengthening my lungs! Yay. Again, thanks for all your wisdom.

I use Google android phone, AD app is available in the Google apps store. To make sure it is still in the store. I just checked. give it a try and best luck!

I have a Motorola and the app is not compatible. I've tried several times to get it to no avail. Glad your Google phone works.

I did it! Last night while nebulizing (7% saline, no meds). Deep breath, hold it about 3 seconds, exhale completely. Did it this morning. Huge difference! The amount of mucus I get out of my lungs is amazing! It’s really the same procedure when I use the Autogenic Drainage app on my phone. Did that last night before bed. Coughed up tons. Slept blissfully cough free all night.
Icantthank you enough!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

When you are using nebulizer, are you using the mask or mouthpiece?
TIA

If you're using a mouthpiece, how can you get the saline in when you breathe thru your nose?? I have to breathe in thru my mouth.

You say you use a mouthpiece. However, in an earlier comment, you wrote in response to a question that you breathe in thru your nose (not your mouth) when doing saline nebs. I think that confused some people, including me.
