How long do side effects from statins last once you stop taking them?
I have been taking 20mg of Lipitor for almost 2 years and have felt yucky since shortly after starting. My cardiologist allowed me to go off one week and I did not see a difference. He also cut back daily to three times a week. I ache all over - neck, back, hips, knees, elbows, and legs are weak. Recently had a normal CK test, but PCP said we might consider a trial off statins since I am below 200 now. Has anyone stopped taking statins and saw a significant decrease in muscle pain, and if so, how long did it take?

CoQ10 is like a vitamin - we have it naturally in the body and it is not known to have side effects, but has been shown to have many benefits. If you were taking a statin as the same time, it could have been that making you feel bad. Supposedly, COQ10 helps make the statin pain less. I have been experiencing more pain in my joints with cold, damp weather so I don't want to take the Zetia yet as I would think that was what was causing it. Once I level off, I'll give it a go.
I think they meant the Repatha?
I started the conversation due to having to stop statin therapy. My cardiologist gave me a script for Zetia to try first, and said if I had problems, we could try Repatha.
I will give it another try. Thanks.
Took about 3-4 weeks to feel better after stopping 10mg Crestor, and I got my LDL down to 90 with just diet and exercise but since I have a 30-40% blockage of my carotid arteries my cardiologist wants my LDL down to 60-70. I tried Praluent and ended up in urgent care with chronic fatigue. I felt horrible for 6-7 weeks after stopping injections. Praluent stays in your system for over 100 days. I’m back to 10mg Crestor and the side effects seem mild after my horrible experience with Praluent.
So I am just wondering if anyone got really sick with total exhaustion any breathing issues like.... you couldn't walk across the room without having to stop to catch your breath and your heart racing with anxiety.
I took Lipitor for a year or a year and a half - over the last 6 months - I was about to check myself into the hospital so I went to my GP - he said, "OH its not the Lipitor".....I stopped taking it and I got better within a week I was feeling I was on the mend....I have been off it for a year now and am almost back to my life.......A cardiologist even said he had never heard of that.....well I am just wondering if you all felt any of this?
I did not feel totally exhausted, but very weak. In my exercise classes, I was at a fraction of previous level - forget jumping jacks, for example. And I could not pick up my 3 yr old grand-daugher or sit with her on the floor and get myself up. It was mostly muscle weakness and lots of pain. A lot of that function is returning - I can do jumping jacks again and lift my grandkids. I can get them out of the carseats - my fingers just could not do that on statins.
I can screw the tops off water bottles where I was using a device to do that. So many quality of life things. I went on like this for 2 years until I told my docs they could give me permission to go off or I would just be a non-compliant patient. We sometimes have to advocate for ourselves. So my LDL is back up - and they are not happy. And I will try Zetia and maybe Repatha, but I will never go 2 years with bad side effects and just put up with it. Everyone reacts differently to meds. Your concerns are valid.
Thanks for your post. Do you have atherosclerosis? The reason I am trying to cope with statins is because I have some build up in arteries. I would not be taking statins just for high LDL, as this can be hereditary and relatively harmless.
I do not. My calcium score is 0 and I have no blockages. My high numbers are likely hereditary. Yet, the cardiologist insists on getting numbers down.
I went off Atorvastatin (40mg) for three months, felt no difference. Went back on it (40mg) , no difference.
I do recommend CoQ10 to counter act the statins' affect on memory. I gave it to my 84 yr old mother in law and noticed rapid improvement in her memory.
