Hormone Replacement starting at 75yrs old

Posted by curlyqlinda1 @curlyqlinda1, Jan 23, 2024

Doing reach, I have decided to try HRT with testosterone, very low dose. I’m in pretty good health, but was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rhuematica 2yrs ago. I’m Just trying to make a better life with what yrs I have left. There are so many positive messages out there, and yes I’m on the older side. I have 6 daughters and we have all been doing a lot of reading on this subject. Is there anyone else trying HRT at an older age?

Holy Moly !! I was always told hormone therapy "should" be okay but there is a high rate of cancer. Is that not true ?
I had a hysterectomy when I was in my early thirties. I am 69 and have been facing so many issues for the last few decades with vaginal atrophy that I think I need a transplant. Seriously though, I never thought there was such a thing as vaginal atrophy.
I did extensive treatments of "Mona Lisa Touch", but it didn't help as I hoped. I have had creams, injectables, etc - does anyone have suggestions on how to get back to unpainful sex after post-post-post menopause ? I just really want to find something that doesn't make me cringe when my husband says "Hey, Baby".
Thanks !

I recently saw my gyno who is a menopause specialist. I asked him about HRT again and he said that, at my age of 79 years, I would receive little benefit and that a concern would be a somewhat higher risk of dementia. That's all it took for me to let it go and continue with my current regiment for health and osteoporosis - exercise - both strength training and aerobic, calcium, D3 with K, creatine, and Reclast. I'm considering adding collagen. One more thing, he did ask if I had ever been on HRT. I was on Estring for several years but not systemic hrt. He explained that is the same as vaginal estrogen which I am now on and is life-changing. He and my PCP agreed that the patch would help hot flashes but I have never experienced them.

I started on HRT in my mid 40 's and remained on it until my late 50 's, when my doctor said that I would have to stop HRT because of "calcifications in my breast" the result of the recent mammogram I had. I am now 75 and am having extreme fatigue, sleep problems, Vertigo, Tinnitus and extreme anxiety and brain fog. I just feel like I need something to make me feel like I used to feel when I was on HRT in my '40's and '50's. Has anyone here started a second time with HRT at 75?

Same for me. I was the generation that was taken of hormone therapy at 55 and developed female issue afterwards such as urology infections, ostepenia and later ostepososis and calcified cardiac arterys. I, also, shrank, over 2 1/2 inches in height. So by 70 I demanded to go back on, Better late than never. I really resent what was done to my generation. Even my mother's generation got estrogen. She lived to 96,

Same with my mother who lived to age 95 but suffered UTI's and terrible incontinence...if her doctor would have just put her on some kind of HRT, she would have had a much better quality of life.

I'm 74, hyst.at 34, on Premarin for 20 yrs. But now, Docs aren't interested in HRT for old ladies LOL. So I bought estradiol cream and progesterone cream and take a VERY small dose, hoping to preserve brain and bone benefits. The prog. helps me sleep soundly, so I think I need it. Seems like maybe the "CONS" were waaaaay overblown in those early 2000s studies, doesn't it?

I didn't know you could buy estradiol cream and progesterone cream over the counter! Would you tell me what pharmacy sells it?

I asked my gyno, a menopause specialist, about an estrogen patch and he said it could have a negative cognitive effect. I'm 79 and in good health. I won't do anything to jeopardize cognitive function. My PCP said I could have one if I had hot flashes (which I don't) but I'm staying with the advice of my gyno. I do use estradiol cream 3 x week and wouldn't miss a dose because of the relief it's given me.
I also have tinnitus but don't think it's due to menopause. I've found that magnesium glycinate has helped with sleep. I get it from Thorne, a reputable 3rd party tested supplement company.
I hope you find some relief.

That just sounds crazy about the cognitive damage part. I have found the estradiol only gives me energy and if I miss a dose I'm tired without it and I notice it!, It gives me a boost to get through the day! I do need to get on the progesterone though as I am not on that part and I know it will enhance the other. We never got around to adding it and it's been a couple of years. My urologist originally suggested I go back on it to my gyno. for recurrent infection and irritation. "Senior bladder" issues.

Not reading much here about the importance of testosterone for women's health. It is a vital part of my bhrt regime.

Thank you. I didn't know that the estrogen patch could have negative cognitive effects, that was the first thing my gyn gave me for hot flashes in my early 40's, and it helped with the hot flashes and at the time I didn't notice negative cognitive effects, that's when I started on Prempro and it was a life saver...until that mammogram. I wish I knew then what I know now.
I also take magnesium glycinate at night to help relax for sleep. I'm hoping that my visit to a new woman gyn who specializes in menopause will help with some estrogen and progesterone. I realize now that, at 75, I'm not to old for HRT since I started it in my 40's and then stopped it after @ 14 years. Thanks, again.
