Hormone Replacement starting at 75yrs old

Posted by curlyqlinda1 @curlyqlinda1, Jan 23, 2024

Doing reach, I have decided to try HRT with testosterone, very low dose. I’m in pretty good health, but was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rhuematica 2yrs ago. I’m Just trying to make a better life with what yrs I have left. There are so many positive messages out there, and yes I’m on the older side. I have 6 daughters and we have all been doing a lot of reading on this subject. Is there anyone else trying HRT at an older age?

My experience is similar to yours except that I’m currently off the Estradiol and experiencing the UTIs. I want my PC to put me back on HRT to see if it will improve how I feel overall and arrest the UTIs. I’m 73 and have been off for 2 years. Just need to convince my PC to try it.If he won’t, I will find someone who will. The UTIs always take me out of action for 3-4 days.

UTI's can be very unpleasant. I use internal estrogen cream, which I insert at night and also an estrogen patch, which I change twice a week. I am 79 years old and instead of having a UTI every month, I now get them about twice a year.

I'm not talking systemic HRT, like Premarin. I'm talking about an estrogen cream that you apply vaginally. Very little, if any, is absorbed by the body so it's entirely safe for all women, even those with breast cancer. It's used simply to restore the shrunken, dried up tissues that occur with menopause, whether surgically induced via hysterectomy with ovary removal (like mine was 25 years ago) or natural. There are some available over the counter, but because they're not evaluated by the FDA, they aren't necessarily consistent with the estradiol content, whereas prescription estrogen creams are.

I use the cream three times a week but I dab a tiny bit in myself. My UTIs have virtually gone. BTW, my urologist suggested this!

I just started HRT at 70, 15 years postmenopause. It was after extensive conversations with my healthcare provider, blood calcium test, weighing pros and cons. The reason is extreme tiredness, severe lower body aches, disturbed sleep etc. I'm wondering what what, if any, side effects there may be. Hoping this will help improve quality of life.

Thank you for the response, and I did see your post. Another question: how long does it take to kick in? I started 1st of July with a patch and progestin tablet. I've been feeling nauseous in the mornings.

I have no idea. I had pellet with estradiol and testosterone, progesterone capsule and estradiol vaginal cream. I felt the effects of the testosterone within hours when my libido kicked in again. The rest happened over time.

I had a uti that wasn’t really a uti. I was referred to a uro-gynecologist who prescribed estrogen cream and pelvic floor PT.
This has fixed the problem. If I slack off with the estrogen, the uti symptoms return.

Same for me. I was the generation that was taken of hormone therapy at 55 and developed female issue afterwards such as urology infections, ostepenia and later ostepososis and calcified cardiac arterys. I, also, shrank, over 2 1/2 inches in height. So by 70 I demanded to go back on, Better late than never. I really resent what was done to my generation. Even my mother's generation got estrogen. She lived to 96,
