Has anyone tried the HF10 Spinal Cord Stimulation Device?

Posted by patrick17 @patrick17, Nov 21, 2018

Has anyone tried a device called HF10 ? It’s a device which stimulates your spinal cord to help relieve back and leg pain. After a trial period of about a week, if the patient is achieving good results the device is implanted in the person. My pain management doctor has recommended it to me for arm and hand nerve pain. I would like to hear from anyone who has used this device and especially from anyone who has used it for arm and hand pain. Thank you.

@fatsfat Have you been to Mayo. I saw the best surgeon that deal with your kind of problems. I had surgery by him. It was a 9 hour surgery for degeneration that caused a scoliosis plus stenosis of My L-4 & 5. It has been almost 4 weeks and I see the surgeon nex week. He is a great surgeon and will be able to tell you what is wrong and hopefully help you. Blessings to you.

No, because they are in Jacksonville Florida and I am in Tampa. Too long of a drive. Wish they had one closer to me. Thx

Wise advice, @sallymagint. It is so important to research when comparing medical devices.

@patrick17 there is absolutely no doubt the devices had a positive outcome for pain management, especially with the damage I was left with following earlier Spinal trauma. In this respect I highly recommend them. It was just very unfortunate that it meant I could not have an MRI which would have picked up the other deficits I was suffering from earlier.
I can only hope that future developments in pain management come up with a similar device that is MRI compatiable because they really can be very beneficial.

In terms of the different types, the two brands were very different. The Medtronic ones I could feel the tingling in the areas the device was programmed to focus. The Nevro was a high frequency one so I couldn’t feel it working. In terms of the two different devices the Medtronic was good in the sense that each time the cycle stopped/started I would feel it kick in. Of course over time I became semi conscious of this happening so there was no thought process about it. If my pain was really bad I could use the remote to increase or change to another program to seek relief and would feel it tingle faster, stronger etc... The Nevro gave better pain relief for me overall even though I couldn’t actually feel it. Again I could increase or change the program to fit with the varied levels of pain. It really helped with nerve pain in legs/back and neuropathy in feet.
I do remember when it was suggested we try the Nevro and I read all the info, I thought ‘I’m not sure how this is going to work because if I can’t feel is working how is it going to change the pain?’ I was was pleasantly surprised how much it did help.

Whatever you decide make sure you research and ask questions of Drs and other patients who have used pain devices - good luck

Thanks for your post. I'm currently in the process of deciding between Boston Scientific's Wave Writer and Nevro's HF-10. Unfortunately, the doctor who's doing the trial has not provided much guidance. 🙁 I think I'm going with the HF-10 and your post validates this direction.

Thanks again for all your good information! I really appreciate it. I’ve been reading as much as I can about it on the internet. MayfieldClinic.com has an excellent explanation of these devices. I still am unable to find any mention of this by someone who has been helped by this for arm and hand pain. It’s scary to me to have the wires and leads put in so near my spine. I don’t want to come home in worse condition. I trust my doctor and I will ask him a lot of questions when I see him. I may seek a second opinion from another doctor in the area who also implants Nevro devices.

@sallymagint Hi. You mentioned u have nerve pain in ur hands & arm's especially the right hand. Have you seen a rheumatologist for a Neurologist to make sure this is not some other type of issue? In my case I have 5 herniated disc's in my neck/cervical spine C3 thru C6. & then again in my Thoracic area 3more discs are herniated.
Especially when I'm feeling exhausted or should I say I feel like I'm going to collapse. & I have Osteoporosis/severe arthritis & carpal tunnel in both hands/wrists & my fingers. So I wear stabilizers/hand & wrist braces to help keep my wrists straight especially at night wen I wake up with shooting pins & needles dwn my forearms & hands. I do not tolerate any type of meds like Pregablin/Lyrica or Gabapentin/Neurontin. But I use Voltaren gel & LIDOCAINE roll On or creme with or without Menthol. Salonpas Brand has no scent. So I thought maybe this info could be something to consider checking for. Best Wishes.

I am diagnous with Arachnoititis which condition caused by surgery and injections and the prognosis is like stage 4 cancer. Just fighting with that to prevent it from spreading and the nerves touching together is enough to scare the crap out of you. It's a condition that's not curable and no research has been done on it and is caused by doctors. Not intentionally but but injections and surgery which I had herniated disc that they went too deep and cause a severe spinal leak. Now I have a permanent leak and a leaky spine causes serious problems for anybody who I've talked to has this condition he's on morphine drips

@donfeld I'm so sad & feel bad that this happened to you. It's sad & very dangerous thinking your putting your life in some Dr's hands & later down the line have to deal with even more dangerous & painful conditions. I'm so sorry for you.
I received at least 5-6 epidurals in my lower back, I have an additional 3 herniated disc's in my lumbar, I also received about 4 RFA's & as well in my thoracic 2nd time wouldn't take. & I also had bunch of epidural injections done in my Cervical 5 herniated disc's as well as 2 times of RFA injections that was done about a year & 1/2 apart. Now it has worn off & I was planning to ask my pain mgmt Dr. For another 1 in my cervical area. But since I read what you wrote about the after effects from unintentional injections that caused for your spinal fluid to leak, I'm really concerned & very afraid of doing it. But at the same time I'm in excruciating pain & it's very hard to deal with. I take medicinal cannabis capsules 3-4 @day. I'm also having total knee replacement surgery around December of this year.

I would be grateful if you could tell me what type of injections caused this condition to happen to you?

I read a part where you said they went too deep & nerves touching each other, what type or types of injections were they?

I was told that it was definitely cause buy a herniated disc surgery that went bad. It was well herniated and they had to go very deep which caused the arachnoiditis membrane to break and right after that I developed a leak where I had a bulge on the base of my spine that looked like a grapefruit. Had 3 surgeries to calm it down within a 8 week period. Then months later that had to go back in and do a Fusion and we operate which I think that is when the arachnoiditis came about. It's hard to say but there are certain injections that were done years ago using different medications that they say caused spinal leaks. You just don't want anybody putting needles into your spinal fluids canal.
