Has anyone tried the HF10 Spinal Cord Stimulation Device?

Posted by patrick17 @patrick17, Nov 21, 2018

Has anyone tried a device called HF10 ? It’s a device which stimulates your spinal cord to help relieve back and leg pain. After a trial period of about a week, if the patient is achieving good results the device is implanted in the person. My pain management doctor has recommended it to me for arm and hand nerve pain. I would like to hear from anyone who has used this device and especially from anyone who has used it for arm and hand pain. Thank you.

I agree that most doctors are not really aware of how excruciating, chronic pain feels. When you can hardly walk, find it difficult to ride in a car, etc. It's almost as if they think that your pain is not really as bad as you make it out to be. Sometimes I wish that I could magically send my pain to them for a day. Then see what it's like to be in this kind of pain almost every waking moment.
Yes, I had the HF-X implanted, and it felt like a gigantic piece of rock sticking out on myleft side. Very uncomfortable. I just had it and all the associated hardware removed. When I look at Boston Scientific's WaveRider, the battery looks so much smaller. I am hoping to get a trial soon.

You might also want to check out the Abbott Lab Prodigy. I have it going on three years and hardly notice it. And the battery is guaranteed for ten years. So I don't have to charge it. God bless you on your journey heisenberg34 botherchuckles80

Thanks, @brotherchuckes80. How is your pain level preimplant versus post implant. Were you able to do a trial? Appreciate your getting back to me.

Hi Salmag,

I have had the Nevro HFX for about 2 months. I haven't been trained formally on using the remote control, but I think I understand it. There are five (5) programs and seven (7) layers of something. Maybe intensity? I have read where the 7-scale isn't actually intensity, but rather different configurations of the leads in your spine. So, I am still confused about what the seven levels are. Questoin: Can you tell me how you explored the different programs and levels? Do I just randomly try different combinations until I hit on something that makes the pain lesson? How long did you wait on a particular combination to see if it does anything? On the one hand, I heard it should be near immediate; and on the other hand I heard the previous settings take time to "wash-out." I am learning everything and everywhere I can. I just discovered this wonderful site today. It would be interesting to me to hear what your experience has been with the remote. Thank you! Rob

Rob, I have had the Nevro HFX for almost 3 years with very minor relief as time has passed. I am having my Nevro removed next week as it is not benefiting me at all. I don't understand why Nevro has not helped you explore how your remote works. When you first turned on the Nevro they should have put you on the program they thought would best work for you. Then as you got acclimated to that setting you would have moved up. They had me wait 48 hours before moving up to a different program. Moving up increases the intensity. Moving to a different program could be set to a different part of your spine or a different pulse that it sends out. The Nevro customer service should be helping you with that.

Also, they can create a setting where it can hit two different parts of your spine to where the pain is. They had me set where it hit my feet and also the pain in my spine. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked for me, thus I am having it removed.

I wish you the best on getting the pain relief that you need. Call Nevro customer service, they should be helping you on this path of recovery.

Hi, over the years I’ve had 3 dorsal column Stimulators (2 made by Medtronic the other by Nevro). I found them to be quite affective however please be very stringent in researching any kind of implanted pain device because many of them are not MRI Compatable. I ended up having emergency surgery to have my all my devices and leads removed so I could receive treatment for severe spinal instability.
I’d been complaining of my back feeling like a concertina that was going to collapse at any time. Of course I didn’t know at the time but that was exactly what was happening. One day I lost bowel/bladder control and it suddenly became a medical emergency. The devices were removed, MRI performed and before I knew it I was having a 6 level spinal fusion.
Even if you are told the device is MEI Compatable ring a few radiology/imaging places and ask then if they do MRI’s with pain devices. Many won’t even though some device company’s approve them. 9 mths prior to my back surgery I had brain surgery across the other side of Australia because no radiology would do a Cranial MRI where I live. Over 4000 to be able to have an MRI.

My pain specialist who put the stimulator in was hesitant to remove it because it was so difficult to put in in the first place. Perhaps if it had been removed earlier I wouldn’t have ended up with such complex circumstances surrounding both brain and spinal surgery. It’s important to remember that if you need one of these devices you probably have chronic pain and your condition may require ongoing imaging to monitor whatever condition it. Please check and double check the information you’re given, I would hate anyone to have to go through what I did

Thank you so much for sharing this information. I am at the point with my DDD(Degenerative Disk Disease) that I’m desperately looking for help.
The doctors refuse to write adequate pain killers and seem to want to force me into surgery. I am petrified by the prospect of a surgical error and subsequently becoming paralyzed. Any additional information or links will be greatly appreciated.

Yep, it interfered with my heart rhythm. I flatlined first time doctor turned it on. Did a 30 day trial. I suddenly had afib. Unit removed and afib disappeared.

First, I’m so sorry you’re having to endure such awful pain. Secondly, I too, have unrelenting pain/damage in discs including c3-7. I’m awaiting insurance approval for the “Sprint” device stimulator. It’s a temporary one worn outside the body for 2 months with wires inside. The device gets removed and I’m supposed to get relief. We’ll see.. unfortunately I’m not a candidate for permanent placement due to low bmi. Best to you!
