Posted by smithjim @smithjim, Feb 20, 2019

Hello, I’m 6 mos with my new liver, most everything is going as planned, I’ve been dealing with gas issues last few months and was wondering if any other people with liver transplants were having this issue? Jim

Hi, @yahushua40. I want to take a few minutes and check in on you.
I live in central Kentucky, and after I returned home from my transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, I also was looking for a local support group., but there ere none. That is when I discovered Mayo Connect and and joined. We are a group of patients from across the US and beyond, and we are from a variety of transplant centers with many different organ transplant experiences. I want to invite you to join us here where we ask questions, share experiences, and support each other.
I am excited to stt that you recently celebrated a 4 year transplant anniversary - Congratulations.
Yajushua, Have you been unable to eat since your transplant, or is it a recent development? What would you like from a support group?

I just joined, and was wondering if we just follow feeds, are there online groups?

@lauraloo81, Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. And a special Congratulations on your recent liver transplant! As a liver transplant recipient, I know that you must have a lot of questions as well as ideas to talk about. Connect is a safe place where members can learn together and support each other on our journeys.
You are absolutely correct - you can follow and participate in any of the discussions. Sometimes it is sometimes easy to find a topic of interest in the title, and other times you might want to begin a new discussion. All you have to do is to type your message in the Comment box or the Reply box. Here is a link to Tips for getting Started -

Laura, I had my liver and kidney transplant in 2009. I became a member because there were no in-person groups where I could meet and interact with other transplant patients. I have found my experience on Connect to be supportive, informational, and inspirational.

Laura, What brings you to Connect? Is it that you are experiencing gas issues since transplant?

I want to wish you a Happy Rainy Monday Morning from my home in central Kentucky. It is hard to believe that the temperature is in the 60's and the crocus and daffodils are beginning to bloom...and...cold and snow is in the weekend forecast!

The title of this discussion could easily include all daily changes after transplant. .. "Hello, I’m... with my new liver, most everything is going as planned..."

What are some everyday changes that you have experienced since your transplant? When did you receive a transplant? What did you learn about how to cope/manage your new life?

@jerrydrennan, @yahushua40, @lauraloo81 -Any updates?

Hi Rosemary!
I am aware and coping with the magnesium toots. =) I am now on the search for a psychiatrist to help my therapist with the mental aspects of being a recipient. Physically, my knees still have issues, but as far as the ever changing spring weather, in easten nebraska it has been -37 in the evenings, followed by 50s the next week.
I am just trying to stay grounded. Blessed and protective, not a germophobe, but aware.

Hi @lauraloo81 Just popping in here briefly. Magnesium toots. I know the feeling! Mine stopped when I switched Magnesium supplements to one a little easier on the system. Have you tried Magnesium Glycinate?

@lauraloo81,
I really like what you said: that you are trying to stay grounded. and being blessed and protective. I believe that is is possible and even healthy to get out and about-with precautions. Is the therapy for your knee? I would imagine that it might be difficult to find a psychiatrist who has experience with post transplant mental health issues if you are not near a big city. Have you asked whether your transplant team can provide any guidance?

I hope that spring comes soon for you! Today my daffodils are covered with snow. Fortunately, I thought to bring some inside last evening so I can enjoy them. I shared this pic with my brother in Georgia this morning, we call them Dad's Heirloom Daffodils - and we smile because we remember how these grew on our grandpa's property, then my dad's yard, and now each of us keeps a patch, and each spring, enjoy memories. But they are much prettier outside!

Do you have any plans for spring? Will your knees permit you to walk or tend a garden?

@smithjim Hi Jim, and congratulations on your successful liver transplant. I had a liver transplant in September 2016 and am doing well, except for...
having gas, and I am also having problems with diarrhea — when I have one, I also have the other. I hate to ask this, but are you having diarrhea or soft stools?
I have been researching this and will try to find the sites again tomorrow. I looked up lactose intolerance and IBS. This led me to some other conditions such as IBD and crohns. What I read was that these are considered to be auto-immune conditions, and one of the causes can be immunosuppressants! I have definitely identified lactose or maybe all dairy to be a trigger for me, but I am having a problem sometimes even when I avoid these, and/or take lactaid. These problems started after I started after taking the immunosuppressants and have gotten progressively worse. It has taken me all of this time to begin narrowing down the cause.
If you also have similar problems or stomach cramps you may also have this. I do not have other symptoms such as stomach cramps unless I exercise too soon after eating anything so I am not sure if that is related, probably not.
If this sounds at all like your problems please let me know, and I will let you know what else I find out.
JK

I know it's now 2022 and you posted in 2019..but I had my liver transplant in January last year.
I had fluffy soft poo's for about 5months but put it down to the op. No one seemed worried until the diarrhoea started and in a very short period of time I lost 3stone and struggled standing up etc. Ended up back in Hospital for two weeks to discover that I was "allergic" or not tolerating the Mycophenolate..anti rejection pill. It was stopped and within two or three weeks I was by far much much better..has any one else had this issue.? Still have lots of smelly wind which can be uncomfy and embarrassing.
Congratulations to all with their new livers, I feel, blessed, honoured and eternally grateful to my donor for giving me another chance. I have PBC which destroyed my liver. Bless all of you, keep well...Janni1

Hi, @janni1. Welcome to Connect.

My problems have long since gotten better. The very odd thing was that mine was lactose intolerance and as quickly as it started it went away a few months later. While I had the problem it was pretty severe and then one day I realized I had mistakenly eaten something I shouldn't have but had no reaction so I gradually started adding more foods containing lactose but had no reaction.

I am glad your problem was solved too and I hope we both remain free from these problems in the future.
JK
