gas issues post liver transplant

Posted by smithjim @smithjim, Feb 20, 2019

Hello, I’m 6 mos with my new liver, most everything is going as planned, I’ve been dealing with gas issues last few months and was wondering if any other people with liver transplants were having this issue? Jim

@smithjim What I am told is to keep a diary of what you have eaten. You may begin to see a pattern of something that is common in your lunches. I generally use myfitnesspal to keep track. It's meant to be for weight loss but it can be useful simply to track your intake. If you try it, it may seem cumbersome at first but once you get used to it, it's a piece of cake.

In the interest of full disclosure, I still have some minor acities, ive had 3 paras in the last 6 mos, will need 1 more before I have a hernia procedure.
Before my transplant I was doing a para aprox every 10 days with up to 10 liters average,
aprox 23 total.
I’ve also had aprox 5 incidents of severe pain and nausea to the extent that I had to lay on the floor or bed in a fetal position till the pain subsided . In discussion with my team I suggested trapped gas, my doctor suggested temporary blockage
and internal exam if it kept up.
Have not had that issue for the last 1.5 months thankfully. Not interested in being poked or prodded any more!

@smithjim, I'm sorry to hear about the ascites. Hopefully this will end soon.
I am jumping in here to say that I had to have a hernia surgery at 1 year post transplant. It was due to a kink in the unique bile duct connection that I needed. Like you, I did not want anymore pokes or prods. I felt that I had already had more than enough of those. My procedure went well, and it was performed by my transplant surgeon. The experience was nothing like a transplant surgery! It healed quickly with no surgical clamps, just surgical tape. I hope that your surgery goes as smoothly for you.
Stay in touch.

Hello, welcome
I am 5 months post liver transplant for chalangiocarcenoma .
I had some bloating and gas at first but the more I walked the better it got. Every once and awhile I get it. Then I go for a walk. I wish you the best. I am dealing with my own issues. Connect can help.
God Bless

Hello, congratulations on your transplant. I am 12 years post transplant. For the first 6-9 months I had a lot of nausea and gas, but they also had me on Magnesium two tablets three times a day because of my low magnesium levels. I was able to decrease the magnesium as time went on and the gas issues and nausea eventually resolved 9-12 months post transplant. Not sure if the magnesium had anything to do with it but it may have. At any rate, it will get better. It took me about two years to fully recover back to my normal self. Be patient.

@annmariaa hello, I am 3 mos post liver transplant but have been dealing with many issues. I have been taking magnesium supplements as I am deficient in my levels. What does this mean and how does this affect my progress? Not sure if you can help with my queries but your experience is valuable knowledge. Thank you.

Welcome to Connect @yahushua40 and a late congratulations on your liver's 2nd anniversary.

The thought occurred to me when I read your post that I should mention, that I finally did very definitely identify lactose as the culprit that was causing me gas and soft stools. I mentioned that possibility in a post to @smithjim in February 2019, but at that point I was still not certain. I am now, and have found very little help from Lactaid, actually no help from that. I do get some help from Digestive Advantage, Lactose Defense formula if I keep my lactose ingestion to a minimum. If something says there is a trace of lactose (sugar) then if you eat much of it those traces add up. My problem did not start immediately after being on immunosuppressants. It was probably a couple of years before it became a problem.
Try to keep track if when you eat foods with lactose your problems are worse. If I eat something with lactose it can take two or three days for it to resolve even though I am not eating more foods that contain lactose.
Lactose is in the whey so aged cheeses are very low in it, a trace amount if any. I can eat cheddars and swiss cheeses with no problem. I can also eat cheesy crackers like Cheezits and Goldfish, which some people with lactose intolerance cannot.

@yahushua40, Welcome to Connect. I see that you have recently had your 3 year transplant anniversary. Congratulations!

I want to share a link to the Mayo Clinic Patient health Care & Information: Intestional Gas
It says that, "Excess lower intestinal gas can be caused by eating too much of certain foods, by the inability to fully digest certain foods or by a disruption in the bacteria normally found in the colon." Information included is: Foods that cause excess gas, and Digestive disorgers that cause excess gas.

Yahushua, I am wondering if you recently changed your diet? or has there been a change in medications?

I just started eating. With all the meds i am on, it steals my appetite. I drink Ensure but I do eat. Lately I have had a good appetite. I eat a lot of veggies with my meals. I know during my transplant, my gall bladder were removed also. So I don't have a gall bladder. I have smelly odor when I burp. It's not every day or week but when it occurs, it last for a few weeks, about a week or two. I did cut back from drinking a lot of Sodas, and I am working out, exercises, so I am trying to live a healthy life after transplant. And thanks. Do you know if there are liver transplant groups I can attend? I am living in Marietta Ga. Thank you and be blessed

Hi, @yahushua40. I want to take a few minutes and check in on you.
I live in central Kentucky, and after I returned home from my transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, I also was looking for a local support group., but there ere none. That is when I discovered Mayo Connect and and joined. We are a group of patients from across the US and beyond, and we are from a variety of transplant centers with many different organ transplant experiences. I want to invite you to join us here where we ask questions, share experiences, and support each other.
I am excited to stt that you recently celebrated a 4 year transplant anniversary - Congratulations.
Yajushua, Have you been unable to eat since your transplant, or is it a recent development? What would you like from a support group?
