gas issues post liver transplant

Posted by smithjim @smithjim, Feb 20, 2019

Hello, I’m 6 mos with my new liver, most everything is going as planned, I’ve been dealing with gas issues last few months and was wondering if any other people with liver transplants were having this issue? Jim

@smithjim, I am happy to hear of your recent liver transplant. It is great to hear that you are recovering as planned. I am a recipient. And at 10 years post transplant, I don’t remember having the issue with gas that you describe at 6 months out. I think that I did at the beginning as my system began to return to normal function.
Is it possible that you have added something to your diet that could be the culprit?
How much physical activity are you doing - any walking?

Hello, congratulations on your transplant. I am 12 years post transplant. For the first 6-9 months I had a lot of nausea and gas, but they also had me on Magnesium two tablets three times a day because of my low magnesium levels. I was able to decrease the magnesium as time went on and the gas issues and nausea eventually resolved 9-12 months post transplant. Not sure if the magnesium had anything to do with it but it may have. At any rate, it will get better. It took me about two years to fully recover back to my normal self. Be patient.

@smithjim Hi Jim, and congratulations on your successful liver transplant. I had a liver transplant in September 2016 and am doing well, except for...
having gas, and I am also having problems with diarrhea — when I have one, I also have the other. I hate to ask this, but are you having diarrhea or soft stools?
I have been researching this and will try to find the sites again tomorrow. I looked up lactose intolerance and IBS. This led me to some other conditions such as IBD and crohns. What I read was that these are considered to be auto-immune conditions, and one of the causes can be immunosuppressants! I have definitely identified lactose or maybe all dairy to be a trigger for me, but I am having a problem sometimes even when I avoid these, and/or take lactaid. These problems started after I started after taking the immunosuppressants and have gotten progressively worse. It has taken me all of this time to begin narrowing down the cause.
If you also have similar problems or stomach cramps you may also have this. I do not have other symptoms such as stomach cramps unless I exercise too soon after eating anything so I am not sure if that is related, probably not.
If this sounds at all like your problems please let me know, and I will let you know what else I find out.
JK

In the interest of full disclosure, I still have some minor acities, ive had 3 paras in the last 6 mos, will need 1 more before I have a hernia procedure.
Before my transplant I was doing a para aprox every 10 days with up to 10 liters average,
aprox 23 total.
I’ve also had aprox 5 incidents of severe pain and nausea to the extent that I had to lay on the floor or bed in a fetal position till the pain subsided . In discussion with my team I suggested trapped gas, my doctor suggested temporary blockage
and internal exam if it kept up.
Have not had that issue for the last 1.5 months thankfully. Not interested in being poked or prodded any more!

My bowl movements had stabilized months ago, obviously also doing immune suppressants, 7 prograph and 2 cellcepts daily along with 1 multivitamin. Just finished with my Bactrim, valcept, nexium ect.
My mornings and into the early afternoons are fairly good, gas build up more so afternoons , eve and nights.
I might need to check to see if I have some type of lactose intolerance!

I’ve figured it was going to take a while for my system to get to normal or whatever the new normal is going to be.
I have to remind myself to be more patient every now and then!

@smithjim Sounds as if things were going better for you than they currently are. I'm glad things are stabilizing, although gas can be a problem if you are out somewhere. I wonder if it's something you are eating that could be causing it since it doesn't happen early. What do you have for lunch?
