I have had two experiences, six months apart, with sudden inability to swallow because of sudden regurgitation of very clear, very sticky mucous, in large amounts. { No pain, no food in mucous. I could not swallow the food I put in my mouth } A frightening event of not being able to breathe through the sticky mucous. I am following a lead from my son, Dr. David Palaia, to investigate for a gastro-enterologist..

Hello Jomoma, and welcome to Connect. This sounds like something you may want to contact a physician about as the sticky mucous is possibly resulting in a breathing emergency. If it happens again, I would recommend contacting your nearest hospital or visiting the emergency room in the case of an emergency or another episode of not breathing.

About 4 years ago I suddenly couldn't swallow. I was drinking a bottle of water to push the food to my stomach. At the time I was taking Crestor medication for cholesterol and my entire body was in pain. When the doctor suggested stopping the pills I went straight to The Vitamin Shop requesting if they had liver remedies. After several hours reading the labels in the area of liver remedies I located a pill that had Milk Thisle, Methionine, Choline, and many other ingredients that I was not familiar. The pills were called Liver Support Factors by Country Life. I got them to experiment with and took two pills a day. On the third day of taking the pills I could swallow with no effort. It turned out to be ulcers on my esophagus from my many years of acid stomach and or Crohn's. The real solution came to me 3 years later. A neck pain made me realize when I ate bread and sweet deserts the pain increased and eating artichoke and vegetables decreased the pain. My friend suggested to stop eating bread and carbohydrates and see if it made any difference. I followed the suggestion and my entire health turned around. My ulcers are gone verified with endoscopy, my 50 years old acid stomach and reflux suddenly stopped, my neck pain stopped, my lower back hands and joints pain called arthritis stopped. My condition with Crohn's went into remission verified with colonoscopy and cat-scan. My diabetes condition reversed to normal since I eliminated sugar and carbohydrates it was verified with several special blood tests. My high blood pressure is normal now. My memory is back better than when I was young although it was terrible over 4 years ago and was embarrassing to carry professional conversation. I can now go to sleep with full stomach as an experiment and don't get any disturbance or reflux. The diet was the major change to my health but the liver supplement is helping also. Amazingly I believe our health is controlled by the liver who express it self with inflammation pain and other health issues. I was treated in 1960 by a doctor in Italy who saved me from surgery of loosing part of my intestines do to inflammation and sharp pain. He prescribed shots of: Methionine, vitamin B-12, and vitamin K. After two weeks of treatment I woke up brand new. No pain, no allergies, no acid stomach or reflux, no bloating, crystal clear brain and eyes and could eat any food without reaction for 3 years. I never lost any part of my intestines except the appendix. Methionine is a liver cleanser but a dangerous supplement that can cause arterial problems. Italy discontinued manufacturing Methionine. My hope is Mayo Clinic will investigate a better ways of cleaning the liver without impacting the arteries to help a large population suffering from diseases caused by eating the foods the liver don't like specially as we get older. The liver loves vegetables specially raw vegetables. Yes I am frustrated since I can't get Doctors to agree with me. A friend who had her ear ringing for over 4 years and seeking specialist doctors including Cleveland Clinic couldn't stop the ringing. My suggestion of changing her diet to vegetables with protein, salads, and fruits stopped her ringing in two days last year. She gets off her diet and it starts ringing again. So is my pain comes back as soon as I start eating sugar and carbohydrates. I hope the medical science will understand the nutrition path to the health of all of us. I hope I gave you some idea of where to start to heal your self in a short time.

I have had this problem for a few years, and about 2-3 times each year. I have finally figured out that it is, in my case, probably a gift of my kind of amyloidosis. This stuff can get into the controlling nerves and make it impossible, occasionally, to swallow. I go through periods of a week or two with this, then it clears up for a few months. The Mayo doctors seem to be incapable of diagnosing this, so I suppose I will have this until I die. I have cancer of various kinds all over and inside my body, so this should be no surprise. I should have pushed to go to Stanford or Brigham and Women's, I suppose.
