Has Anyone Tried the New drug Ibsrela for IBS-C ?

Posted by phxbarb @phxbarb, Dec 19, 2025

I saw that it was approved for adults with IBS - Constipation. I am always looking for new and improved drugs for this condition that I have had all my life. Painful hard rock -like stool with cramps and long-term occurence. So tired of it. Today the usual cocktail of laxatives did not work for me. So miserable and hoping for relief.

Hi @phxbarb, I am hopeful Ibsrela will help your IBS-C. You have to be encouraged to find a new possibility for relief.

I am tagging some that have commented about Ibsrela to find out more about their experiences: @jp9 , @mrsflutterby , @mothermary1 , @standinginfaith , @bunnycuddlez , and @peppatty12

What does your usual cocktail of laxatives consist of?

Hi,
Ibsrela was not a good fit for me, it gave me horrible bouts of IBS-D. So I went to Trulance and was doing well until I went on a European river cruise last month. It was not pretty. There were two days I had to stay in my room to be close to the bathroom. Not sure what made me so opposite of my norm, but I’ve had to go back on Xifaxan to get things under control. I did retest for SIBO and was negative. So I’ve stopped the anti-constipation meds and am hoping things will calm down. Long answer to a short question but I know this forum understands the frustration of just wanting to be normal and having everything go to you-know-what.

Wow. That's awful. Especially to miss part of the vacation you look forward to.
After a terrible bout with constipation yesterday, I started (again) Lubistrone (sp)(Amitisia) to see if I could get things moving again. It did a marvelous job and I will continue with it daily. Just was hoping there was something else that might give me hope to control this disease. I really need a good GI but there are none taking new patients here so I have to travel 2.5 hours to see an MD. Thanks for your post.

@phxbarb, like you I take generic Amitiza (Lubiprostone). I hope your restarting it, or perhaps Ibsrela improves your IBS-C

Amitiza is actually the latest thing incorporated into my constipation treatment. A consistent diet full of specific foods that help is important for me, and I start feeling my GI working exactly 26 minutes after hopping on an elypitcal machine every morning. Then, pelvic floor therapy that made absolutely no sense to me at the beginning has been a game-changer. I added consistent daily MiraLAX and senna before ultimately starting Amitiza. It all becomes so exhausting at times to maintain a schedule for all these things but then I remind myself of how “regular” I feel now in comparison. It certainly did not get better overnight, and I absolutely do not want to go backwards. It certainly has not been an “easy button” but I consider it a win!

I do know Amitiza is a prescription drug. Do you get help from the doctor that prescribes it for you? What is your diet and physical activity look like, do you think you may have room to improve how your body functions in a way that would sorta help your body….help the medicine you take work better? (I hope that makes sense)

My GI/PA just switched me from script for Linzess to Amitica. After 2 days of nothing, I added colace and MiraLAX& finally I had a BM, but not a healthy one but I’m grateful for something.
Does anyone ever have a “healthy” BM again when taking all these “laxatives”, maintaining diet & exercise?
Sorry you missed two days of what should’ve been relaxing vacation time.
Thank you for sharing.
Why are all these gut issues so common. My doctors say mine is age related.

@jkoc2612 Yes, most of it is age related. When the gut says "I will rest now" we get anxious and say "For how long?" My biggest fear is getting stuck in the higher up colon and not being able to get it out, which means a trip to the ER ? I hate exercise, except walking the dog. Sometimes I do laps around the kitchen island, but going to a gym for me is not going to happen. I am my own worst enemy.

Why are so many of us in this predicament? American diets unhealthy or just mine? What I’m learning from my research, is that I cannot possibly eat in one day all the high fiber that is required in 1 day. I’m trying and lots of water. And there are the necessary meds that cause constipation. Always thought iwas healthy and I exercised. Have to stop complaining and being such a downer, and get back into exercise such as walking around the counter, around the house. It’s a beginning. At least, you’re walking your dog. Good luck

@jlharsh The last med helping is Linzess, but now with 2 to 3 stool softeners. I hate running to the bathroom, but Linzess and 2 stool softeners stopped working.
When I started Linzess approximately 6 yrs ago, it gave me immediate diarrhea im.ediately after eating, and now progressed to what I mentioned above. I am fearful that if this regimen stops working, what is left? There are two prescription meds not covered by my insurance which would have been the next step. On the days I take Linzess with 2 or 3 stool softeners, I have to stay home in case it works.

Also, exercise is now limited due to degenerative disc desease at S1, and C2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Pain is 24/7. Injections, etc, etc, have all been totally unhelpful. Mayo Clinic in Rochester has told me that nothing else will help.
I also have osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel, painful achilles tendinitis in left heel. On meds for high blood pressure, anti-depressants, etc. I am trying to stay upbeat, but exhausted all the time due to insomnia. I need to lose 20 pounds as that should help some back pain. I have scoliosis with the curve starting at thoracic spine down to tailbone.
