depression/anxiety

Posted by brit @brit, Feb 3, 2019

Today if feel so anxious and depressed. I say that because I feel that every day. Nothing changes and you know what because I am not doing anything for myself. Tomorrow I am starting a new yoga class it will be here at home alone. Its a start and I am tired of feeling this way and I must do something to
help myself instead of hoping the Lord will do it. I have to partisipate too. Wish me well and will keep you posted. God Bless Patti

@contentandwell good for you cold air is refreshing

I just read an article in a Fabric Art magazine that was very good and I guess I was meant to read it today. Titled “ You Don’t have to Be Good at Art to Benefit from an Artistic Hobby” by Casey Lesser. It says everyone can benefit from the arts whether they’re talented or not. “A plethora of research studies have shown that expressing ourselves through art can help to ease a wide range of illnesses and afflictions, from anxiety and depression, to dementia and cancer. More broadly, making art—be that sketching, writing poetry, dancing or playing with clay—can make us feel happier and more relaxed, and can also help to improve our observation, motor and problem-solving skills.” How do we find the time? Set aside a portion of your time spent on electronics to doodling, knitting, painting, etc. Few people have hobbies because “we’re afraid of being bad at them.” As a result we’re missing out on the benefits that leisure activities can deliver—like making us creative, happy and calm.
So let’s get doodling, fishing, playing card, birdwatching, sewing, painting, gardening. Sure can’t hurt!

@becsbuddy – have you by any chance seen this thread called "Art for Healing" on Connect? You might enjoy it. https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/art-for-healing

@lisalucier Thank you for directing me to the art-for-healing thread! It was wonderful and makes me more determined to get into my quilting. I found a class on Fabric Portraits on Facebook and figured “I could do that!” After 18months of not sewing, it’s a very hard class but I’m sticking with it!

@lioness I am humbled by your sharing the picture. While making my flight plans for June's training in Rhode Island, I shared a couple pictures with the agent, as she wanted to see my work. It is not something I am comfortable doing. Tell me more about the art and poetry forum – very interested! I talked myself out of extending my outing, just came home.

A few years ago I started painting. There are 3 different teachers on youtube that I watch. It's free. So nice to do in the comfort of your own home.I have learned so much and I love doing it. I've done a few originals but I love the tutorials. Keeps your mind busy. If painting is not your thing find something that is. I also love cross stitch. Simple projects. Crochet and knitting. I only know how to do one stitch in knitting and really have no desire to learn more but I can do it while I watch tv or a movie. When I was pregnant it was puzzles. I should have started with yoga! Exercise would be wonderful. At the moment I'm scared to hurt myself lol I'm pretty clumsy and re covering from surgery

Welcome @julie1976– I find that I have stopped my art too. Having PTSD has put a crimp in my imagination and creativity. I use to do watercolors, even won a couple of awards. What kind of art do you do? What are the teaching videos that you watch?

@brit Glad you’re out walking and doing yoga. Just came in from a short walk. It’s only10’ outside, but the dog insisted. But she only wants to stay out for 5minutes and it takes me 15 to get all my gear on! I make her walk at least once around the park on cold days. And it feels good!

Glad you did get outside. There is something about getting outside and breathing in that cool fresh air. Did my yoga this morning and I will keep on with it although right now (in the early stages) just starting I don't feel much different but I will keep on "trucking" God Bless Patti

@merpreb Get on you tube and get back on it I myself work with acrylics . The lady that got me started is under Painting with Jane….I believe she has a couple watercolor tutorials but I haven't watched them yet. Another excellent teacher is The Art Sherpa….she has some watercolor tutorials. But I would do a search for simple watercolor tutorials in you tube. When you see a painting you'd like to paint watch the tutorial. I watch one, then watch it and paint. It is so great to pause it and get to where you want it and hit play. I cannot believe how someone could teach me to come out with a painting so complex. Some of the paintings that look difficult are actually simple to do. I really know nothing about watercolor.
In November I saw a picture of the large mass in my skull. When I had my surgery date I put all the painting stuff away. (I work at my coffee table) I had a count down until surgery day. That was January 7th. In January I finished 3 pieces .Letting your mind escape the stress..listening to the lesson and painting. I helps immensely
