Constant sinus

Posted by naney @naney, Feb 4 2:35pm

I have an issue I’ve seen no one write about. I’ve been to 20 drs., had cryotherapy and innumerable drugs and rinses. My left sinus is constantly running a thick sticky mucus. I can’t go anywhere,do anything….live. It makes breathing difficult. The morning is the most difficult as I’m so stuffed and have to really work to clear my head. An ideas? I’m really desperate!

@naney Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You have been to 20 doctors and you still do not have a resolution to your sinus issue. It sounds like your sinus issue is greatly effecting your quality of life and feel desperate for answers.

Other members like @learningstudent @bride @nrd1 @bwilliams61 @destinyh96 @drumline7860 @mrsworm12 have also discussed undiagnosed sinus/ENT issues.

May I ask how many of the 20 doctors were ENT doctors, what kinds of diagnostics were done, and were any of the doctor visits at a specialist or teaching hospital?

I am so happy you replied! I’ve been to 17 ENT Drs.! Not enough ?I really have no life with this. I spend my day on the couch …. just breathing! I went to Penn ENT and Temple ENT. Also to Jefferson. I’ve had CT scans done. There’s nothing wrong in my nose/ sinus ! I wish there’d be at least a reason. I don’t know how I can keep this up? I’m wondering if a sinus research center could help? Ideas ?
Again….thank you!

@naney-I’m so sorry you are experiencing this. 17 ENTs is a lot. Keep in mind ENTs are surgeons, first and foremost. It’s just the truth. They’re main goal is to find structure abnormalities. They will spend very little time if someone presents to them with something that seems irrelevant to them from a surgical perspective. Be thankful your scans show nothing. When you know the why behind something that can be most helpful. I would suggest seeing someone outside of the surgical world who can help you understand the sinus/nasal issues. There are many Naturalpaths who share an interest. There are many things that can cause an overproduction of mucous. Environmental irritants, Allergies, Weather, Stress, Hormones, Exercise, Diet, Hydration, Mold etc…The noses job is to produce mucous to protect many things. Nasal rinsing, hydration can help.

You will have better luck speaking with an allergist, natural path versus a surgeon.

Thank you! I have seen an allergist. They had nothing to offer .I passed the allergy test. I’ve also seen infectious disease Drs. I guess I’m really in trouble!
Thx for your time!

@naney-may I make a suggestion, to be mindful of the catastrophic verbiage. The mind and body are connected. Thoughts become feelings, especially to your physical health. The nose produces mucous. It is a normal function your body is doing for you right now. For whatever reason there is an uncomfortable imbalance right now. You have more control over this than you are giving yourself credit for. As I mentioned above address some things from within and any environmental irritants you may have in the home.
Work with someone to look at the entire picture. It might be something very simple, that no doctor visit will help you figure out. Be well.

@nanny Thanks Erika for giving me this opportunity to talk with nanny about this issue. Nanny do you have any ear issues? WHen I was sent to a ventibular ear specialist it was because of not only a lot of nasal drainage but dizziness . Nothing was found but my ENT did tell me to use a saline wash in my nose and gave me some ear exercises to do . I don't know if these would help you but with my problem it did help. I still have some nasal drainage thick at times but its when I also have a head cold to clear up . But I still wash out my sinuses most days in morning before I eat .

Thank you for your help! I do sinus washes every day. I’ve also done them with antibiotics. My ears are still fine.
I do wonder if an incident 8 years ago led to this. I had a chemical reaction happen between pool chlorine chemicals. A cloud developed around me before I could run. I believe my problem started shortly after. The symptoms started slowly over time. I have the problem constantly. But morning is worse because I don’t blow my nose in my sleep. Ironically…I have only sneezed 4 times in over 4 years! I use to have terrible allergies until this started up.
I do appreciate your help!
Thank you

I honestly wouldn’t know where to start to get my home checked for molds etc. Any idea for that ? Ideas for who would/could work with me to figure out a fix ?
Thank you again!

…hi, sorry to intrude… but I went through searches for years to find out what was causing my eyes to be red and sore; and now I am trying to find out about "stringy mucus" from one side of nose…. it can be surprising what we end up finding out…. my eye issue at that time (I now have unrelated Glaucoma) it was the office xerox machine toner! Recently I read about paper tissues we use to keep blowing our noses etc, can have a lot of chemicals in them and people are actually having reactions to blowing or wiping their noses with the paper – so they are suggesting fabric handkerchiefs which is a bit of a nuisance but who would think paper Kleenex would cause reactions in some users? Just thought would mention it; also stuffing in bed pillows… probably not a cause for you but have read some of the fabrics/stuffing is so processed its even worse for some people than feathers etc. Best of luck with your problem, I have similar issues plus a laundry list of other medical problems and it sure can affect our quality of life. J.
