Celiac Artery Aneurysm: Anyone else with same illness?

Posted by Jen @jurney01, Jul 23, 2016

Hello! I was recently diagnosis with a celiac artery aneurysm in June 2016. I underwent a embolization w/ coils procedure since the aneurysm had grown while in the hospital. I was trying to reach out to someone who suffered the same illness but have not been lucky. I would like to locate someone with my same illness. I would appreciate any help. Thank you

Hello .I see most of these posts are from a couple years ago. I hope someone is still out there. I have just been diagnosed with a 1.2. Celiac artery aneurysm. I went in with upper chest pain and the Dr. ordered a Ct scan of chest. Lungs were fine but incidentally found this aneurysm along with a dissection of the Sma. Reading a little here and there I feel quite frightened by all this. I see a vascular surgeon for a consult today. I think according to my GP, he is going to recommend only observing it. I wonder how you know if it is growing ,how dangerous is the wait and see approach?

Thank you all for responses. I hope you can see my response to dolly Linda. Praying for favourable healing on dissecting artery and waiting until October for repeat Ct scan.

If aneurysms don’t go away then I am wondering why they just wait and see. I know it’s not large but it seems to make sense that a stent of some kind makes more sense than doing nothing and risking rupture Does anyone have thought or can enlighten me.

Hi Janet26,
Apparently some aneurysms can grow quite slowly or are stable at one size. The surgery to repair an aneurysm is very invasive and MD's don't wish to subject a patient to that if is isn't necessary. My aneurysm has been stable at 3.9 cm for 8 years. I am sure if it starts to grow the monitoring will be more frequent and if it gets into the high 4cm range, surgery will be considered. It is my understanding that aneurysms are more likely to rupture once they reach 5 cm and above. For me, since I also have two leaky valves, including the aortic valve, I expect at least the aortic valve will be replaced in the same surgery. Right now, my cardio is trying to limit the pressure on the artery via medication –Metoprolol. Heart surgery is serious stuff and although I would like to have all my issues corrected, I hope to avoid surgery for as long as I can.

Someone mentioned trying to shrink the aneurysms. Since I can't have surgery because of my age I thought that steroids and antibiotics might help to make me feel better.. Anyone ever given that option?

I am having digestive problems because of my aneurysm…..any help for that?

Ernestine, I believe there is a AAA non-surgical repair available for those who are not able to tolerate a surgical repair. I suggest discussing with your cardiovascular specialist. I believe it is called EVAR.

Thank you for that reply. I guess it’s all new and scary to me to think of this aneurysm you can’t see and wonder what it’s doing in there. I also have a messenteric artery that has some dissecting going on that’s scary too but the doctor says sometimes these heal on their own over time. One can only hope towards healing as opposed to further dissecting. I am on statins and asa that’s all. I do not have hypertension. I guess that’s in my favor.
Good to hear some stay stable for years. Thanks again.

I am wondering if anyone diagnosed with celiac artery aneurysm have an underlying disease?

As of May 2018, there have been no changes. The aneurysm is stable, and the pain level is minimum and not consistent. I get like a shockey twingy pain under my lower right rib. I was told by my doctor at Mayo, that the pain if it ruptured would definitely be bad since it is so near my spine. In other words I would know right away if it ruptured.

My apologies as well for not replying sooner, but I lost this thread until today when I was seeing if there's any further studies

I'm in the same boat as you both are. I was diagnosed with a 2 centimeter Celiac artery aneurysm about 5 years ago. I also have a blood clot on the back side which apparently is safe because the direction of the blood flow and the aneurysm block it from traveling. Apparently the hepatic artery had a blockage from a small blood clot as well that obstructed blood supply to the liver however my body grew capillaries or veins on its own or whatever to supply the liver with blood. Watching and waiting is no fun come and I always get so concerned when I have to have my ultrasound every two years, but I guess it's just the life I've been given

Thank you for posting this. I get digestive problems too and at times it like my abdominal muscles are sore. I never had this until last fall, then I was diagnosed for the celiac aneurysm in Dec. I would like to know too if there is any help for this discomfort or do we just learn to live with it. I did get a recent CT scan of the abdomen and everything was good.

What do you do for the pain under the right ribs? Mine goes up my right ribs into my shoulder blade and right side of the neck. I try to just breathe through it but it can be frightening since it seems to come out of no where and after a while (10 minutes maybe) it just goes. I would like to know what causes this symptom for those of us who have a celiac aneurysm.
