CBD oil and depression/anxiety

Posted by lalyfa @lalyfa, Feb 24, 2018

I am curious to know if anyone has had success with CBD or Hemp oil helping with depression/anxiety? I’ve been reading a lot about it and am curious.
I’ve been reading about this and am very interested but would like thoughts/opinions from anyone who has actually tried it or knows someone who has. TIA

Thank you,
Laura

Hi, @granny55,
You might consider starting a new discussion (see instructions https://connect.mayoclinic.org/get-started-on-connect/) on whether CBD will help with sleep in the Mayo Clinic Connect Sleep Health group https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/sleep-health.

@granny55 CBD does help a lot of people with sleep. I take 25mg before bed, but my wife only takes 10mg.

I want to try cbd oil. Not sure on dosage but how do you know if a shop is giving out the pure stuff?

@granny55 Most CBD companies will provide an independent third party lab report that will show the amount of CBD, THC and pesticides in their product. It is usually available on their website for download. It may also be referred to as COA (Certificate of Analysis)

I am 68 years old, I take 2400 mg of CBD in coconut oil a month and will take it until the day I die. It helps me control my anxiety after getting off of effexor. It also helps all my aches and pains go away. I feel young and spry on it.
I use Lazarus Naturals. If you are a Vet, disabled or low income, they will give you 60% off. I have no articulation with this company…
I wish you well. Bright Wings.

My 31 yr old son who suffers from anxiety, perseverative thoughts and autism has been on CBD tincture for past 5 months. He was on 5 different psychiatric medications prior to starting on CBD to control irritability, anxiety, aggression toward himself and others, perseverative thoughts ..With his psychiatrists advice regarding reducing the medications slowly, I have first removed Guanficine, then Clonazapam (clonipin) and am now weaning him off of Invega 9an atypical antipsychotic). His staff and myself have seen a big improvement ie less behaviors, less anxiety, better mood, no aggression, . He is doing better than he ever did on the 5 prescribed medications (poly pharmacy can be problematic because of long term side effects) . Currently he takes about 20 to 1 CBD tincture every 4 to 6 hours and about 2 to 3 times/day. He is currently taking Myriams Hope but also had success on Sweet Jayne, Care by Design. You can google these. Best to find a reputable company and consistent product but understand that product will vary a little because CBD is made from plants I also went to a nurse practitioner who specializes in CBD for psychiatric issues, seniors with alzheimers , pain and cancer issues to learn more about dosing , Rule of thumb, start slow and go slow in taking CBD to address anxiety. long term goal for my son is to have him off most psychiatric drugs because there are no side effects to CBD that we know of and also he is doing better than he ever did. this is a much better option. Only problem is cost, Medicare and Medicaid will not cover it all. Sad situation because the CBD has so far been more effective and is much less costly than the poly pharmacy he was taking. Also recommend taking daily data on target behaviors or issues you are hoping CBD will address e.g. restlessness, irritability, sleep, change in behaviors related to anxiety or depression. Happy Thanksgiving

Hi Stephanie. I have a 16 year old with ASD On poly pharmacy including risperidone and abilify seroquel and epival. The only thing that is helping with his current aggression is ativan which of course is terrible. Anyway we are just starting Cbd without guidance although I am going to work on his pyschiatrist. Hi ASDmommy and others who suffer from severe anxiety.
My 31 yr old son on poly pharmacy, atypical antipsychotic, SSRI's Clonipin, Guanficine has been weaned off of 2 medications in the past 6 months using CBD as a substitute. . ( He no longer takes Clonopin and Guanficine and his atypical antipsychotic (similar to Resperidone) the dose has been cut in half. I want to get him off the SSRI and atypical antipsychotic but because of very physically aggressive past behaviors and the issue of having to taper off slowly to avoid side effects, I am going very slow in tapering the prescription drugs. Also his bone density is going down due to side effect of atypical antipsychotic and SSRI he has been on for years. I give him Vit D and Calcium . With past serious aggression like hitting himself or others, property destruction I use to give him Atavan, but now he has not needed it generally speaking. . For past 6 months the serious aggression and horrible anxiety has not happened. I give him CBD tincture 18:1 Care by Design every 4 hours during the day BUT everyone is different so this should not be considered for everyone. His psychiatrist only gives minimal advice- most MD's do not know much about CBD. She assists with giving advice on the weaning off the psychiatric drugs. The Radicle Health clinic nurse practitioner gives me consultation on the type of CBD and dosing. I think she does phone consults as well. She started first working primarily with cancer patients but now is seeing a lot more people with autism, anxiety etc. http://www.radiclehealthcare.com Teenage years can be very difficult due to puberty and fluctuating hormones. I am guessing that CBD has a very calming effect without getting him high so I wish I had given it to him in his teen years. But there was little or no information on it years ago. Hope this is helpful to you. FYI most likely none of the consultations or the CBD will be covered by insurance yet. Hopefully things will change as more research is done in the future.

The care by design is 18mg of CBD in 1 ml. 18:1. I initially started with Treatwell but they went out of business. Then I switched to Sweet Jayne, then Myriam's hope. It is a lot of trial and error. Now I have been using Care by Design since it seems to work a little better than the others. If you find a reputable marijuana dispensary with people who have treated others with autism and/or anxiety they can give you very valuable information. Also Radicle health clinic which was worth paying privately for consultation, was very helpful.
I initially started my son with a very small dose 0.25ml which had little effect, then went to 0.5 ml and now he recently started taking 0.7 ml every 4 to 5 hours. I also have his care staff take daily data on some of his target behaviors which indicate anxiety for him eg. yelling, hitting, rubbing hands together repeatedly, pleasant, more cooperative etc, You can look at the ATEC Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist on the ARI website and there are other behavioral checklists that can be adapted for an individualized treatment evaluation form. Taking quantifiable data I find is important because then you have an idea of what is happening daily, how the person is before the CBD and after. INMHO, data taking or at least journaling is important to determine the efficacy of psychiatric medications.
For my son CBD seems to start taking effect after about 45 minutes. Hope this information is helpful There are other websites on CBD and autism which I have to explore. I am not an expert yet so please do not take what I wrote above as a recommendation.. I am just sharing my experience. . I am a RN with a masters degree and may take an intensive course in CBD/medicinal marijuana to further help my son and others.

Excellent advice. Thank you so much. I have a 20/1 product and I gave him 1 dose of .8ml this morning. I won’t do more than that till I get a mes professional on board. And I will check out the data sheets they sound better than mine. Thankyou so much. It is a long road. But I do not think my son is helped by all the meds he is on indeed I think they make him feel lousy which is partly why he lashes out. So again, thankyou. Your example has given me determination to try this.

Some of the psychiatric drugs that MD's prescribe often very long term, you really have to weigh the risk/benefits. When I saw from his bone density tests that his bones were being impacted and not to mention the possibility of tardive dyskinesia and he is doing better with CBD oil, less irritable, anxious and no aggression, it was a no brainer. I would think this would apply to others experiencing anxiety, depression etc , not just those with autism. as well. Too often MD's are quick to prescribe psychiatric medications without considering the long term effects, for example clonipin can be addicting others can cause tardive dyskinesia. I just hope that the CBD will continue to work for him. There is little research on this. Definitely need more studies.. However there is little research on FDA approved drugs for autism as well I figure a more natural plant has to be better than some of the psych drugs we know have serious side effects.

Wow, I too am an RN. I thought all this was hippy crap. Oh my gosh, it is not.
I had tremendous abuse as a kid. I finished my healing 1/11/11. God has continually led me to the next step in my healing. CBD was introduced last summer and I will take this until the day I die.
I used to be on 16 meds. 6 of them were sedating. I took my last Effexor Jan, 2018. End effect of getting off all the meds was high anxiety…
CBD gives me a completely normal life. I moved recently from out of the Ozark wilderness to a town of almost 4000. My normal personality has come out and I am the hit of the senior center. I make everyone laugh with my antics and singing. I isolated for years after my husband died.
I use Lazarus Naturals. 50 mg to 1 tsp. Cost is a factor for me. I was paying $50 for 1200 mg in coconut oil. 2 bottles a month. I take 1/2 tsp 3 times a day. I feel wonderful.
Now I have no affiation with the company. They have 3 programs that give assistance with cost.
1. Vets 2. Disabled 3. Low income. 60%off once the appropriate papers are sent in.
I lost my nursing career after a simple bone spur surgery that became a 2 year nightmare. Ostiomylitis. Tomorrow I will order my first CBD at 60% off.
I also have MS. The polar vortex got me. My last bad relapse took 4 years to get under control. I know CBD helps my MS too. I have been using it since last summer. Like I said I will use this until the day I die.

Please Google drugs that react to CBD. There are 20 classifications of things that when adding CBD cause the liver to change how it cleanses medications from the body, either increasing the removal time or slowing it. Adding CBD can change this function so while taking CBD, you may be overdosing or underdosing your regularly prescribed medications. Benzodiazepines is one group.
I wish I could post links but just write on a phone.
Best to you all, Bright Wings
