Caregiver for my wife when I need treatment for my AML?

Posted by wes152 @wes152, May 10 6:55pm

I've been told I need a bone marrow transplant, and I'll be in Rochester for 3 months. Trouble is, I have no one to care for my wife, who is a stroke survivor. She does not qualify for medicaid here in Wisconsin, so the social workers have no answers for us. Anyone else ever dealt with this?

I didn’t think to ask about how disabled your wife is. My other thought is an assisted living place where you could stay in the same room as your wife. You could receive services as well while you recover. You would have to be sure to explain what you need when you look into it. It would be cheaper than a SNF, even if you both stayed there while your treatment is ongoing.

Thanks for the reply, and the prayers!
The adrc won't help unless my wife is on medicaid. We do not qualify. I guess I'm looking for answers outside the normal government assistance programs.

@wes152 , I’m no expert, but, i would try to find one in your state to explain the options. Usually, the social worker or financial office in a nursing home can assist. Usually, there are 2 types of long term care financial assistance , 1) is Assisted Living which comes from the state and has strict income limits as well as asset limits. Not much leeway. And 2) long term care in a nursing home. True longterm care Medicaid. This is we where you get actual long term care Medicaid. It also has asset limitation requirements, though one auto and one home are exempt and income is considered, but unless you actually have enough income to pay the full month’s long term care facility fee, they work it out. You have to use all but about $40.00 per month from your income, but they pay the rest. If you have investments accounts, savings, etc., this route is still possible, but you have to spenddown those assets first. It’s a lot of work for 3 months, but I’d explore it with an expert in your area.

Still waiting on the social worker. Elder centers are a great thought! Thanks!

@wes152, I'm just catching up with this discussion. Any update? Did you find care for your wife when you get treatment? How are YOU doing?

Hi @wes152 I wanted to touch base with you to see where you are on the your transplant schedule following your treatment for AML. Hopefully there have been positive options for caregiver for both you and your wife. Are you able to go ahead with the transplant soon?

Thank you for thinking of me. After exploring all options, we have determined that a transplant is not feasible. Hopefully the Lord will see us through my treatments and grant me complete remission without a transplant.

Hi @wes152 In recent years there have been many advancements in AML treatments. We have several members in Connect who have AML and managing their condition without a bone marrow transplant. That’s been an enormous step in progress since I had my transplant 7 years ago.
This may be a much better option for you, so that you and your wife can remain together at home. Would you mind sharing what your treatment medication will be? Are you still being treated for your AML under the guidance of Mayo?

I will start my 4th cycle of decitabine with venclexta on 7/13, and my last marrow biopsy showed 0% blast cells present. My only side effects have been some joint and muscle pain, manageable with Tylenol.

No longer showing blasts on your last biopsy is really encouraging news that the treatment has worked! ☺️
Has there been any discussion for maintenance followup?
