C. difficile – Are your guts ever normal again?

Posted by sue6408 @sue6408, Jan 27, 2019

Does anyone know any body that has recovered from c.diff (guts back to pre-c.diff status ) . I have been negative for a year and still have bloating every time I eat anything and sporadic diarrhea. I need maternity clothing to eat and be comfortable. I have 0 appetite since I was initially infected.I am on creon 36,000 . this helps some what with bloating,I take papya&pineapple enzymes not helping, and floraster 2xday not sure about that.I have tried the FODMAP diet, I avoid many foods on that diet. I am seeing an RD, just finished an elimination diet with her. If I eat I bloat there for I am. Bottom line…are my guts ruined forever ?

I'm suffered for 7 days with what I thought was a bad case of the stomach flu until I went to my family doctor and they requested a stool sample and found from that that I had c-diff I believe this is the sickest I've ever been in my entire life

@sandyabbey @losthope I am so encouraged to hear that you are on Dificid (fidaxamicin). That's the on RX that seems to be working for me. I've done Flagyl first, Vanco second, Vanco taper third & FINALLY Dificid with my 4th bout. I finished Dificid on 10/26 and so far…so good. This is the longest I've gone without a C.diff episode since April when I finished Clindaymycin. I'm fighting a cold now that I hope doesn't turn in to a sinus infection. I was given Clindamycin in April after my 4th sinus infection. There is no way I will take another antibiotic right now when my colon is finally functioning pretty normal. More and more physicians have stopped giving Flagyl for the first Cdiff episode. They are starting with Vancomycin and then going to Dificid earlier in the process. I realize that the cost of Dificid is prohibitive and my insurance didn't approve paying for mine until I had tried other drugs. I have a friend who was given Dificid after her second relapse and she has been free of C.diff for over two years. I, like a few of you here, will do the fecal transplant if I have another relapse. My fingers are crossed and I pray to God that Dificid worked. It's the one drug that ONLY kills the C.diff spores and leaves your good bacteria. Wishing you all a healthy 2019.

@bluebananna. How did they treat you & how are you doing now ? When I presented with my horrible diarrhea I thought I might have Cdiff because I had taken a round of antibiotics for a sinus infection. I don’t take antibiotics unless absolutely necessary. I had taken clindamycin before so I wasn’t to worried. Then I got this horrible Cdiff. I’m like you, I’ve never been so sick. Mine happened on the weekend so I waited until Monday morning to call my dr. They sent me to the ER because I needed fluids. I was started on Flagyl initially. I got better but as soon as 3 days off I was sick again. This happened 3 times & my GII changed me to vancomycin. I had 2 weeks of it. I’ve been off now for 7 days & I’m definitely better, but not ok. I have a loose stool in the morning & maybe one more later, but I always feel like I need to go. Almost everything I eat hurts my stomach except very soft things like cream potatoes, eggs etc. I’m lactose intolerant so I have to be careful with yogurts & things like that. I stay afraid all the time that it’s coming bsck. My GI dr said my next step if it does is a FMT. I’m terrified. This stuff is a nightmare. I hope you can overcome yours. Some do with just one treatment. Just stay on top of it because most have reoccurrence.

@losthope @serenityva With my first bout, I had a lot of "gel like" stools. When reading everything I could about C.diff, I also found articles with photos of exactly what my BM's were like. The "gel like" is actually puss and sloughing of the colon lining and would float in the water. I never in my like thought I would be talking to people about BM's. How things change after 4 bouts of C.diff for me. And yes, they were very narrow, almost pencil like in size.

I have the slime too. And I too am surprised that I am talking so much about my stools and slime. But I feel grateful that others have my issues

I will never forget the smell of cdiff. I actually work in a hospital and you sometimes smell it and gag. I nevertheless thought I would talk about my BM to anyone. I just am glad I have people to talk to it is scared and it is so life changing. I pray for everyone who has this disease and I think clindamycin should be taken off the market

@lost hope I agree. Clindamycin needs to be taken off the market. It has almost killed me with 3 relapses of Cdiff

I call it the devil’s antibiotic. I never knew a week’s course of antibiotics could cause so much devastation for so long. It took me three months of diarrhea, losing 20 pounds, two other rounds with other antibiotics and finally following a strict diet to finally see some improvement.

@guthealth…….. most everyone say they got cdiff from antibiotics but that wasn't the case with me. Have no idea where or how I got it but I did. I might of gotten it the second time from the antibiotics I got on for the first round. Had three rounds of it one after another and then I was done and this has been three or four years ago…….. Good luck to you all……..

I have just posted VERY LOW FRUCTOSE, LOW FODMAPS, AND GLUTEN FREE RECIPES AND DIET in the Fructose Malabsorption discussion section. This might be a help to the C-Diff group. I had a very severe case of viral food poisoning that left me with fructose malabsorption, etc. Take a look – you might find it helpful.

Finally found a specialist and I am excited to see what he will do. First step is the lab work to verify if it’s CDiff again. Then we’ll go from there. I am feeling good about this doctor

@ngarriso Yes, the key is getting a good diagnosis. You have to know what you're fighting. And C.diff spores are the most difficult to kill. They last for months on the surface of things. It's key to use Clorox or some type of bleach on everything around your bathroom. I even wiped down the spray cans and light switches. And hand washing for at least 20 seconds. The nurse practitioner at my GI office told me to sing "happy birthday" every time I was my hands. 🙂 I continue to take Florastor every day as suggested by my gastroenterologist. Please keep us updated how you're doing.

Does anyone else have a good day where they eat and the next day go to the bathroom all day. Not diarrhea just bowel movements which irritation for hour after. I am thinking it’s something other than the cdiff. Diverticulitis or colitis or irritable bowel. Any thoughts
