C. difficile – Are your guts ever normal again?

Posted by sue6408 @sue6408, Jan 27, 2019

Does anyone know any body that has recovered from c.diff (guts back to pre-c.diff status ) . I have been negative for a year and still have bloating every time I eat anything and sporadic diarrhea. I need maternity clothing to eat and be comfortable. I have 0 appetite since I was initially infected.I am on creon 36,000 . this helps some what with bloating,I take papya&pineapple enzymes not helping, and floraster 2xday not sure about that.I have tried the FODMAP diet, I avoid many foods on that diet. I am seeing an RD, just finished an elimination diet with her. If I eat I bloat there for I am. Bottom line...are my guts ruined forever ?

This really depends on you personally, some people complain of issues years after C. Diff and some people are fine I think it really depends on how you take care of your system after the bacteria is gone. Try drinking kombucha that is supposed to be great for but health and has been said to help with bloating and stomach issues. Also a probiotics might help to heal your gut. I hope some of this helps!

Thank you for responding , I do take kombucha (how much to take daily ? ) I take probiotics , floraster 2xdaily. I just don’t know what else to do. My G.I. Dr. Has no further ideas. My chart was sent to the Mayo Clinic and they refused my case for what ever reason. I am at the end of my rope.

@sue6408 It's not been a year out for me yet since my first Cdiff episode from taking Clindamycin. I've had 4 bouts of Cdiff, the last one being in October. It took three different types of antibiotics and over six months to find one that worked. It's been a little over three months since I finished Deficid. I still have days that my BM is loose but not watery. I don't have the bloating like you do but I do suffer from gas and especially in the mornings or if I lay back in a recliner. I don't know how many bouts of Cdiff you experienced but it has really taken a toll on my intestinal tract. I'm sure it will take a year or maybe two to ever feel like my "old self".... I was always more constipated and that was more my norm. Especially if I eat things like licorice or jelly beans. Have you tried cutting back on the amount of probiotics you're taking. I'm no medical professional but I'm wondering if "too much of a good thing" can also cause some of your symptoms. You might try taking one Florastor daily. I'm cutting back to one a day and see if that helps with the gas I'm experiencing. It sounds like you've been tested for so many things, I'm sure you're emotionally and physically exhausted. Wishing you well in 2019.

Thank you for responding. I could try that . I have even tried beeno but that didn’t help either. I had the same infection for 10 months. I tried difficed , but tested positive 2weeks later. Next was vanc and that killed it . Every time I get the runs for 3 or more days, I get a stool culture. So far everything is negative. I just want to feel normal and enjoy life again.

@sue6408 I just bought Gas-X yesterday and I'm going to try that and see if it helps with the terrible gas I wake up with almost every morning. It says it also helps with bloating so you might want to try that too.

I feel your pain. It just seems the Drs. Don’t know how to heal our guts after C. Difficile. I have been on the lo fodmap diet and I know any bean, pea or cabbage is off the menu. Trying the low fodmap might help identify culprits that cause runs and your worst bloating. I never thought I would have a box of diapers hidden in the back of my closet at my age.

So I am wondering if anyone here has had the fmt? I am headed in that direction after having had my 4th round of antibiotics. According to my gastro doctor, that is the next step. He says it has a 90% cure rate. Anyone with thoughts?
