Breast bone wiring

Posted by freedancer69 @freedancer69, Mar 4 12:32pm

Can any of you tell me about the wiring of the best bone back into place after an Aortic Septal Myectomy? Did you have a great deal of pain? Did it hurt to breathe? I am very nervous about my surgery on the 11 of April. I will be going to the University of Colorado Hospital and my Doctor is Dr Cleveland.

I am doing ok. I do not have to use oxygen during the day now, just at night when sleeping. I can do all my chores on my own but find I have to do them slowly and I have to sit down about every 8 to 10 minutes. I found it easier to pick one chore a day and do it. I don't get so tired. I took out my own drain stitches today. I find that my back hurts alot if I overdo activities. I am using my breathing apparatus regularly so I can get better at taking a breath. Thanks for asking about me.

Glad you are doing OK and slowly but surely recovering. Interesting about the stitches - mine were all glued - no stitches at all anywhere! Different techniques all with the same end result.

I did ask him. He said he thinks of me as a family member and that is where they would go.

Were you happy with Anschutz? I live in Colorado but my cardio is pretty insistent on the Mayo.

It was ok. They treated me well there. I wanted to go to Mayo but the VA sent me to Colorado. The doctors were very good.

Hi @oliviasoma,
I had my knee surgery four months ago. That's four years after my open heart surgery. Everything was fine but the anesthesiologist wanted to be extra careful and put an arterial line in for better monitoring. HOCM and HCM post open heart surgery makes the anesthesiologists anxious! I was cleared for surgery by the Mayo Clinic right before my surgery, as in my local area HCM is unfamiliar and foreign.

I wanted to have my knee surgery before the heart but no anesthesiologist would touch me. Now I have to have the heart first then the knee. I was hoping to have it a few months after the heart surgery..is this possible? Sharon

I was wondering since most of us go back to our states and not back to mayo clinic. Do they glue or staple now in Rochester? What can I expect? Sharon

I had glue from what I could see. If there was anything else, they were never removed. Ask your doctor/team at Mayo. It's possible that different surgeons proceed differently depending on preference and patient.

Hi Sharon @oliviasoma,
That's a question I cannot answer except to say "it depends." It depends on what your physician says and how you are doing. I can give you my opinion (for FREE!) and that is to say I think a few months is too soon after a septal myectomy to go through another surgery under anesthesia.
I am almost five months out from my knee surgery and the results are not wonderful. This supposedly simple surgery has kept me from walking my trails and in PT for over four months.
I'd give your body time to heal completely before jumping into another surgery.

As for the open heart surgery in Rochester: When you leave town, you are ready to go. You may have some lingering fear of being too far away from this incredible facility, but they would not send you home if they didn't think you were ready. The incision in my case had no sutures on the outside, and self-dissolving sutures in the subcutaneous under layers.
I know you must be anxious about all that is coming up, because if you didn't you would not be like everyone else!

You will be at the finest place in the world for this and your fears will turn to wonder and thankfulness as you go through the process. Keep reading the posts on here and store up the information for future reference...I was scared out of my mind! But when I first joined Connect, two people reached out to me and eased my fears somewhat. I loved having their input and no longer felt alone. Your Connect family is right here with you!

I also live in CO but opted to go to Mayo in Rochester. I was very pleased with the decision as they had 2 surgeons that perform the myectomies, one for the septal and the other for a possible apical, should it be necessary. The apical wasn't necessary. I preferred going to Mayo as they do so many myectomies compared to other centers, (it was actually recommended by one of my CO cardiologists). I am almost a month out and my progress has been just what they told me to expect. It was a 2 day drive but both my family and I feel it was well worth it.

Did you have to wait 4 years to have the knee surgery? I have a torn meniscus and really need to have it scoped and fixed. I need a total knee replacement on my other knee. Cronic pain in both knees..I don't think I can stand it for 4 years!! Yikes.. Sharon

@joyrcc How are you today? Every day better? You are a bit over a month out now. Symptoms better? Healing well? Pain good? Help, I am pretty nervous about my surgery on June 11. Sharon
