After Iridotomy - eye pain and headaches 2 months later

Posted by dibr @dibr, Sep 28, 2018

I had a YAG iridotomy done July 24th because my angles were closed. No pain, no nothing … no symptoms. My left eye was done first and yes it hurt but in 5 minutes, pain was gone. A whole different story with my right eye. The initial laser zap was an unbelievable pain that I have ever experienced (I have a very high tolerance for pain) and it never went away and I also had extreme headache on right side as well. I asked the opthamologist what happened because of the extreme pain and headaches. He said nothing. I asked if everything was ok, he said yes. I continue to have headaches and pain in my right eye 2 months later. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hello everyone. I just got a laser iridotomy 2 weeks ago. The doctor told me I was going to get blind if I didn't, and advice me to do it as a preventive method. I am 27 , and I work with computers, so I decided to do it since there weren't any big side effects ( according to the doctor). I also have pain in my eyes, specially in my right eye. I can't stare at the computer for longer than 10 minutes or any other screen, my right eye feels numb, heavy, and difficult to move, and I have a terrible light sensitivity. I am going to check with other specialists, and try to find an answer . I will be posting any updates that can help.

I recognize exactly the pain and sensation you describe, but I have another condition (map dot fingerprint). Maybe let a doctor have another look, you might have some damage on your cornea.

Hi. I had the irodtomy in my left eye 10 days ago, and have constant pressure and headache. Did your headache go away? Quite worried

I had mine done Friday and my eye has had a weird pain/pressure thing going on since.
I'm supposed to have the left done in 2 weeks. Not sure if I want to now.

My wife has been suffering with constant eye / head pain going on 2 years after her LPI. No answers as of yet.

I had the left eye done in 2020, no problems at all. I had the right eye done 3 weeks ago and the pain in my head while he was doing it was excruciating. About 2 weeks ago I began getting a pain on the left side of my head. I'm wondering if he hit a nerve that traveled to the opposite side or what, and I am also wondering if I really needed this. How is your wife doing now. I'm going to an ENT in a few weeks, because I'm thinking maybe it could be sinus pressure, but after reading all these comments, I doubt it is, but I am going to demand an MRI. The pain can sometimes be debilitating.

Welcome, @gwenr @mgtbren and @karen888. It sounds like all three of you are experiencing headaches after laser iridotomy. I can imagine that is quite unsettling - to say the least. Has anyone raised this unwanted side effect with their ophthalmologist?

I have a pain on the opposite side. He said he has no idea what it can be and suggested allergies. I'm going to my ENT in a couple of weeks and will demand an MRI . The pain is excruciating. I had no problem when I had the left eye done, and did not feel a thing. Three weeks ago when I had the right eye done, the pain I felt on the right side of my head was excruciating. Now I feel constant pain on the left side and sometimes all over my head. I think this surgery is a big money maker

I was advised by my doctor to get the procedure too and I was wondering why there's no other alternatives like drops or any medication first. I am contemplating of doing it but she said I will go blind if I don't do it!

I regret this surgery so much. The pain, the eye/s, the relief is intermittent and unpredictable! Surgery was almost 2 weeks ago. Some days are great then out of nowhere--wham!!! Who could live like this for months or years?? God help us!

I wasn't told about drops! It was either yag laser or cataract. I had no symptoms either but was afraid of a random event that could lead to blindness at some point. My yag surgery was Nov 14th and I've had pain in either or both eyes almost every other day or so since. I'm going along just fine for a day or so then out of nowhere the light sensitivity starts and I pretty much know it's going to be hours of a day long event. Pain behind the eye/s. Achy, throbbing, sore to the touch, even ear and sinuses become involved... Does anyone else experience being cold? Slight nausea? I know the nausea is one of the symptoms to see the doctor but bring/having type 2 diabetes, this is typical for me due to some of the meds. Anyway, I'm happy and blessed to have had a great Thanksgiving day... Last night and today? Not so good. God bless and prayers!

the comments worries me. I went to get a second opinion and of course they asked for the diagnosis and sure enough they confirmed it's needed and the doc that did the second opinion also scheduled me for the procedure. The sad part is that we have to trust these doctors and we have no idea if they are doing it for money or it is a medical necessity 🙁 God Help us.

Very sad... I do know the drops are very expensive so maybe that wasn't given to me as an option for that reason, but that would be concerning also. At any rate, I'm so far happy to report that I haven't had any more light sensitivity and pain the last couple days that I was experiencing since the surgery. Hopefully it was JUST "post surgery healing" problems since they couldn't find any issues when I went back in pain last week. We have to just keep praying there are honest doctors out there and also for healing to those suffering from the unnecessary and necessary procedures.
