7% Saline in Nebulizer for Mac

Posted by healthybon @healthybon, Mar 7, 2023

Could you all give me your opinion?
I have Mac..don’t know species yet.

I’m new at this but have seen many posts on here about how important it is to clear the mucus. Saline in nebulizer, flutter valve!

I requested that my pulmonary call in a script for the 7% saline to be used in a nebulizer! His response was “just use the flutter valve, the saline could make things worse.”
I have read in this support group that everyone uses the saline and also videos on UTUBE…..etc. I’m confused.
What is your opinion on this?

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the MAC & Bronchiectasis Support Group.

If he doesn’t agree w 7% find one who does. It clears extremely well.

The 7% can be pretty brutal. I'd try the 3% first. As far as making things worse.....find another doctor. He's incorrect

I found it very difficult to use 7% solution, so at the advice of the forum I have been mixing my 3% with about 1/2 of the 7%. It has been effective at moving mucus but not causing irritation in my chest and throat. I hope to be able to build up a tolerance and eventually use 7% so I get the benefits of the full strength.

Hi lenorj. My approach is the same with using half 7% and half 3%. My pseudomonas has poked its head up again so I'm on Levofloxacin but am slowly going to 7% to assist the meds. Best of luck.

I didn't need a script for 7% saline. I bought on Amazon - Base Laboratories quantity of 50 vials for $34.16. You can save another 5% if you setup future deliveries.

Could someone in this thread help me know which nebulizer to get for the 7% saline (I need a brand and type)? My physician has just added saline to my treatment of MAI. The review on Amazon look so negative for those nebulizers. Don't these nebulizers have to be sterilized somehow? How are you doing this? With boiling with disinfected water or are they self-cleaning or what?
Any help welcome,
Mokie

I always recommend that people look to a medical supply company for their day-to-day nebulizer.
Here are things that are important - a strong compressor, a good warranty and relatively fast dispensing times, as well as lower decibels if you will be using it around others or noise bathers you.
I have been using these devices for MANY years, and can tell you that most of the portable, compact, hand-held ones are not going to make you happy long term.
There are both larger and small (quite portable) compressor models depending on your needs. The reuseable nebulizer cups for all of these can be sterilized, and the tubing is replaced regularly, but not washed or sterilized.

The best way to get what you need is to call one of the dedicated medical suppliers during business hours and talk to one of their consultants, who can direct you to the best machine for you. Here are some reliable companies I use/have used with good results: Just Nebulizers (justnebulizers.com) Nebology (nebology.com) Corner Home Medical (cornermedical.com) and Vitality Medical (vitalitymedical.com)
I'm sure others will have their own recommendations for you.

Pari or Ombra are most often recommended brands by Drs. https://justnebulizers.com/ is one place you can shop them. I use the Pari sprint cups and tubing with either the Ombra compressor or the Pari ProNeb Max compressor. Look around online and then come back if you have more questions. You do have to both clean the cups and sterilize them. The manufacturer provides instructions for that or ask here.

Hello, Irene

Thank you for taking the time to advise me about the nebulizer. I appreciate your noting that these are the ones doctors recommend. I don't mind sterilizing. My concern was that many of them were marked as poor quality online (not the ones you're recommending). The link will help immensely.

I appreciate your sharing information. Best regards to you, and blessings on your health.

Hello, Sue

Your response to my query about nebulizers was very informative and helpful, especially as the links and some tips were included. The noise issue was something I would not have thought of! Glad to hear from you, and I always learn something when I read your posts to others, too.

Blessings to you and many thanks!!
