I have been on weekly Fosamax since April 2022. I have no side effects. Within 6 weeks of being on the med, pain in my Right hip subsided. Before that I was having hip pain just from standing up. The physical therapist that I worked with at the time determined that the pain was from the osteoporosis because I had no pain when sitting or lying down. That prompted me to decide to seek treatment. I recently had a DEXA scan with TBS in October 2023. Compared to the DEXA from 2021, the results now show that I have osteopenia which is an improvement. TBS is 1.22 meaning bone is “ partially degraded “. Since this is the first TBS, I’ll have to wait until the next one in October 2024 to know more. I had to see an endocrinologist in order to have a DEXA with TBS.
In addition to the Fosamax I also take supplements : Fortibone + collagen type 1&3, vit D and K … I walk 2-2.5 miles with interspersed stomping steps a few times weekly. I also use the Marodyne daily when not traveling. As much as possible I adhere to a bone healthy diet and stay away from processed foods. I recently saw the dentist and there is no deterioration in jaw bones.
I plan to stay on the Fosamax until the next DEXA + TBS in October 2024 then will take things from there.
Sorry for the long post. I hope it helps. Everyone is different so we all have to decide what’s best for each of us depending on each person’s situation.
It’s correct that osteoporosis and osteoarthritis are two different conditions. When you were told that osteoporosis is “ SILENT “ = NO PAIN, I’m sure it applies to most people. IMHO, in many instances there are always people who don’t fit into the general picture. I remember clearly having hip pain just from walking around the house then one day in June 2022, standing in my kitchen I realized the pain is gone. To me it makes sense. An osteoporotic/weaker femur is stressed supporting the body weight => pain. I’m not saying that Fosamax is a miracle drug, far from that. I’m grateful that I don’t have any side effects and it works for me in conjunction with supplements, diet, exercise…Additional details: I started Fortibone and Marodyne LIV in May 2023. Prior to Fosamax, I was on bio identical HRT for 2 years.
Yes, a referral was needed and my primary said a referral would probably only yield a confirmation. I switched primary physicians and the new doctor felt that it was too soon to medicate with one area at -1.9 and the rest higher.
I have only been on Fosamax for 3 months and so far no side effects. I was fearful to take it based on possible side effects & other concerns about its impact on bone. Felt between a rock and a hard place & decided to try it.

I took fosamax for the recommended limit of 5 years, no apparent side effects at the time. A couple of years after I stopped taking it, I found that I had developed osteonecrosis in my jaw. It's not a common side effect, but it does happen. Like you said, it's like being between a rock and a hard place.

I have been on Fosomex now for two years. So far, so good. I have not had any side effects. I am so sorry for those of you who could not tolerate this drug. So many side effects to these drugs today that we need to take! My doctor told me that I have to stay on this drug for five years. Just hoping that side effects do not occur. For now, I will keep on taking it. Thank you all for such informative posts.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope your dr has helped you thru it & you are better now. Have you gone another drug? I'd be so afraid to try another biophospate. I like the bone building drugs but you can only be on them for so long.
Interesting my rheumatologist just told me osteoporosis is silent not painful. Pain is from osteoarthritis 2 different problems

I took Fosomax for 2 years knowing a big fusion of my back was in my future. I had no symptoms taking it.
Now, 5 years post surgery, I have a lot of pain from it.
What were your highest numbers
Thank you,karen
-0.7 on lumbar spine.

Thx for sharing your experience. I’m taking note of it, for sure. Sending good energies to you.
