Can you complete your dental work before you start Fosamax? Ofcourse you can refuse to take anything you want, but inevitably your bones will worsen. That is what happened to me. The good thing about a once a week pill is you can stop that and be done. An infusion lasts for months.
Hi....that's what I've been thinking about doing....to be honest, I'm not even sure it's absolutely necessary...I DID see the x-rays at my dentist's....it was darker underneath the implant, etc., and this is all part of a permanent bridge, includes 2 other teeth...there is no pain whatsoever and of course with getting older, I have a little 'gap' at the gum line, where it's receded a little bit. I've also thought about getting a 2nd opinion....just don't know what exactly to do. So many decisions lol! I have my Fosamax here.....enough for 3 months....12 pills. I haven't started on them yet....they just SIT. I'm even thinking about 'supplementation' instead....am taking what I should for my bones, except the right kind of calcium....I've been watching Dr. Doug Lucas's (a retired Orthopedic physician) videos on You Tube, they are all about Osteoporosis....the most beneficial supplements to take, the meds prescribed for it, the best exercises for women, the supplements NOT to take, etc., it's all very interesting & informative. I'm just kinda taking it slow here...if I DO decide to take the Fosamax, I'm going to break the tablets in half, at least for the first few months...or maybe even, not take it at all. You can only take it for so long, anyway...and this, and more meds for Osteo., may cause fractures in the future. This is all getting so confusing....the thing is, Drs. prescribe what they are taught to prescribe, and if they don't....and let's say someone fractures a bone (after they have had a not so great bone density test), they don't want to be sued...and could be. BUT...the Drs. don't usually know the truth about many meds....the side-effects, the dangers...but they prescribe, because they're 'supposed' to. LOL I've had a long day and am just going to think a bit more on this. We women should not have to go through the worry, of whether a med will help or hurt us...ugh!! I go to a holistic chiropractor who, as a child, was never taken to a physician_ She told me that Fosamax causes bones to be brittle so that if you fall, they actually shatter.
My Mum was on fosamax. She was the healthiest lady I knew aged 89! Running with the Grandies, walked for miles up hills, swam, and many voluntary jobs. She got extremely tired for about 3 months then had a wee stroke. Bloods weren’t good and she had to have bone marrow check. Hardly any Red cells! Leukaemia! We read up on fosamax and it wasn’t good. Kills bones!??? So maybe started that process of killing bone marrow?? Think it caused all this 😞
I had a lot of muscle and joint pain with Fosomax after taking Evenity which was pretty debilitating due to those same adverse reactions. I avoided Reclast for same reason you stated. But I am on Actonel and am doing well. A little achy but very tolerable.
I see this Comment was made in 2016, but wow....it kind of scares me. I have a new Dr., he sent me for a bone density (hadn't had one in 6 yrs.) and right off the bat, prescribed Fosamax...70 mg, a once-a-week pill. When I read the warnings and possible side-effects on the read-out that came with it, I almost panicked. I see a cardiologist next Thurs., so am putting off taking this for right now. LOL enough to worry about. This is a great site, though...and I can get some good info. from it. I'm so sorry that you went through all of that, but thank you so much for letting us know your experience. I'm just kind of 'in limbo' right now...I need to find out more. I have read about it on the Internet...and mostly BAD. Geez....it's always something. 🙁
I took Fosamax for years and it never improved any of my scores. At least they didn't go down. Took 2 injections of Prolia and couldn't do anymore due to pain in my bones. I'll take my chances with my diet and vitamins. I am almost 82 and have had 2 hip replacements.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2022 and had successful removal of the cancer plus radiation. I was prescribed letrazole to combat the estrogen that is a cancer feeder. One of the many side effects of this drug is bone loss, I am supposed to start Fosamax, but would prefer to take a more natural route. I have osteoporosis and osteopenia so having to add a drug that causes more bone loss is a definite negative. Does anyone have any suggestions? My friend was able to increase her bone building activity with bone broth and some other supplements plus bearing workouts, I am 65 and 113 pounds 5’ 6” And very active.

Would Reclast do the same thing to bones?
I have no trouble with Fosomax. Good that there are alternatives.
