Fatigue every afternoon - How can I get more energy?

Posted by jmorris58 @jmorris58, Dec 18, 2022

I am 75 and am very tired every afternoon. I need a two hour nap. My blood work is good. Any comments that can help me get more energy?

After discussing with my cardiologist, my GP, and my psychiatrist, I have settled on clonipine, and it has solved ALL my problems. No vivid dreams, no hangover, and sweet, sweet sleep.

I frequently feel fatigued and finally realized that my sleep issues getting up and restless is the reason for my fatigue. I'm trying to goto to bed by 11pm to allow tossing and turning to get up by 9 am. Fortunately I'm
Retired.

@jmorris58 I’m about the same age as you and I can get very tired, too. I have found that if i go out and take a walk, my energy comes back. My husband tells me that I snore very little so I’ve not had a sleep test. I sure hope you find an answer soon—spring and summer days can be too nice to miss!

There is also another source of afternoon fatigue if there is no history of long term gut issues.

Increasingly B12 Deficiency is being seen in Seniors. If you separate the most common source of B12D for vegans, then a possible source of B12D is age - in that the process of absorbing B12 from food sources tends to be less functional. As the number of a protein called Intrinsic Factors that transmits into the blood stream decline significantly.

The best solution for this reduction in B12 transfer capability is periodic B12 injections. How much and how often will vary for each person’s causalities and can take a while to titrate the best schedules.

If a B12 injection isn't available, taking a B12 methylcobalamin sublingually (under the tongue) works as well. I take two 5000 mcg tablets daily that dissolve under my tongue. It's water soluble so what your body doesn't need, it expels. My levels were good the last time I had my blood checked.

My husband complains about fatigue and its very frustrating to him. I recently discovered an all natural energy drink called Celsius.
About an hour before he heads out to do yard work etc. he drinks one. He says it helps.

I found I had sleep apnea after being disgnosed with nocturnal seizures. Have gone from cpap to bipap this past year. Get about 3 hrs sleep then the darned thing makes it impossible to sleep. Kind of defeats the purpose. Have to nap every afternoon due to fatigue. I do not use the bipap when napping. I try to walk, eat right, and take seizure meds. But have to nap or can’t make it. Age 72

Maybe you are not getting restful sleep at night, at 75 bodies slow down, so it could be a normal thing.
Are you doing too much in the morning.

As you know, some meds can cause fatigue. Try taking those at bedtime.
