Want to discuss prolapse bladder or any kind of prolapse

Posted by Tanglefoot @tanglefoot, Aug 2, 2015

I am looking to discuss prolapse bladder or any kind of prolapse that other ladies have experienced as well. I would also like to comment on incontinence as well. There is a lot to talk about when it comes to prolapse bladder etc and it seems to be a silent epidemic among women. If there are others out there like me, lets talk about it and I have some solutions. I am surviving prolapse bladder without surgery and I have been living with it for over ten years. I wear a support garment that is light and easy weight and fits right under my existing underwear. Don't know what you are doing or wearing, but I would like to hear from you. Thanks.

Hello @tobiw, and welcome to Connect. While I search more for members who have discussed this, I would like to share some resources that you may find worth looking at. Here is an article that was partially authored by a Mayo Clinic physician on total colpocleisis, https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs00192-016-3034-4. Here is another discussion here on Connect focused on Prolapse that you may find worth your time reading through and participating where you feel comfortable, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/i-am-looking-to-discuss-prolapse-bladder-or-any-kind-of-prolapse/.

@tobiw, if you are comfortable sharing, has colpocleisis surgery been discussed with you as an option with your medical provider?

Hello, @tobiw -- since your topic, colpocleisis surgery, is a vaginal closure used to treat prolapse, I've merged your post with this discussion on prolapse.

Hoping that members here knowledgeable about prolapse, like @pizon @gailg @AlwaysHopeful @prolapsehelp and others may have some information and insights to share about this option for treatment.

If you have any further background on your situation, @tobiw, that would be helpful. Are you looking at colpocleisis surgery and also other options?

Hello, @pizon - thinking of you since you'd mentioned you were having some stitches removed yesterday due to scar tissue building up over the nerves after your bladder and uterus repair. Wondering how you are doing today?

I would like to be tagged on this discussion too as I am totally blinded by this and too embarrassed to talk to the doctor about it. I don't know if it's vaginal or rectal prolapse. I suspect rectal since I've suffered so often from chronic constipation/diarrhea. Can someone tell me what the symptoms of each...

In reply to @colleenyoung, I suffer from rectal prolapse. You know if it is rectal because a bulge will come out of your rectum when you go to the bathroom. I had a radical hysterectomy in 1985 and had some nerve damage to my bladder. I have been straining to pee all these years and developed a rectal prolapse. I do not want to self-catherize so have been working with urologists lately to see if they can help with medication as my prolapse is getting worse and I am pretty sure I should have surgery for it and am afraid. Every time I pee it comes out and I manually push it back in. I would like to know if anyone has had this problem and has had rectal prolapse surgery? I tried PTNS for the bladder by urologist's nurse but it did not work. I will try an acupuncturist. Meds give me side effects. Anyway, if anyone can tell me if they had rectal prolapse surgery and what it is like. I also have IBS, sounds like what you have. Hope I helped some. --Mary.

Hi y @skd43usa, - sorry to hear you have all 3 prolapsed. I have had a prolapsed urethra for years but have not done anything to correct it. However, I have recently gotten a mucosal rectal prolapse and that is devastating. I had severe hypothyroidism and they made me get the radioactive iodine pill to kill off the thyroid. However I was overdosed and it caused extremely bad constipation when I turned hypothyroid , thus the prolapse from straining. I also have a mucous discharge from the anus, probably from the inflammation as the prolapse comes in and out at will and I wipe it and wash it at times. I am going to pelvic PT to try to strengthen the sphincter muscle but so far I am not doing that well. The therapist insisted on doing a vaginal exam to test the shphincter tone and I think she pushed a bit of the discharge up into my vagina as I have developed a yellowy discharge from the vagina since ten. I am afraid to go to the
gyn as I do not know how to prevent leakage from the back door and do not want more pushed up there. A;lso I am 79 and very atrophic and in the past after a gyn visit I bleed for 2 days from the speculum opening me up.

Do you have a discharge problem from the back door as well? If so how do you handle it? I tried putting a gauze pad there between my cheeks but because of the prolapse coming in and out, it stuck to the gauze pad and hurt when I took it off to pee. Luckily it did not bleed but afraid to do that again. As far as surgery there, I have been advised that it can make the situation worse, is not a permanent fix, and could cause permanent real bowel incontinence when they fool around with the sphincter muscle. Don't know if I can live with this one tho. It is taking my life away. Occasionally I do even get some fecal leakage but not too often, just the yellow mucous which do strain my undies. I was throwing them out but now bleach them first and rewash as could not afford new undies every week. I also find that at nite anything running ut goes to the front area which is disturbing so at nite I do put a 2 x 2 gauze pad between my vagina and anus to prevent anyting from leaking that diretion. However I put a vit of vaseline on my AH so if the pad should touch the prolapsed insides it wont stick and maybe tear me. Can't do that during the day however as it is very irritatting to have the pad there when sitting, etc. and it also falls out from my cheeks easuily. If it was just incontinence and no prolapse I coud handle it better.

Do you have any suggestions how to go to the gyn for an exam? I am more afraid of the days afrter I guess as I am afraid of any contamination in the area of the vaginal opening where it will be bleeding and open for infection, or worse sepsis - getting into my blood stream.

Hell to get old!!!!!!

In reply to sueblue - I have a rectal prolapse and it is devastating. My straining is due to some nerve damage to my bladder years ago from a hysterectomy and straining since then. I have a mucous discharge from the anus. What I do is wear a large panti liner and a smaller organic cotton one over it. When it is wet I just change it. I am 74 and also atrophic. I would not put a gauze pad there because I think it would stick, but a regular soft pad to keep changing. I have heard that rectal prolapse surgery is the only solution and many have benefitted from it. But I have not heard from one person to state this, only research on the web. My prolapse comes out every time I strain to pee. Sounds like your's is coming out more. I would see a good colon rectal doctor if I were you. I saw a good one last year and keep putting it off but it does get worse. Let me know how you make out. --Mary.

Hi, @mary1234 - I see that you've recently joined Mayo Clinic Connect, and I wanted to welcome you. Your posting here automatically adds you to those following this discussion on prolapse and notified about new posts.

I'm sorry to hear about the rectal prolapse. I have actually had rectal prolapse surgery personally. My bladder prolapse got very bad three years after my youngest son's delivery, such that it was interfering with walking (felt like I walked like a cowboy, due to protrusion), chafed when I exercised, bothered me when I sat and a host of other issues. I'd already done sling surgery before and knew from previous talks with the urogynecologist that a hysterectomy plus repairs was the likely answer. What I didn't expect to hear was that I had rectal prolapse. I was unaware of it. I guess I was a "dropped but not protruding" case.

So, I had this surgery in combination with the hysterectomy and repairing the bladder to the correct position.

Lisa Lucier, how was the rectal prolapse surgery? Was it successful? How long did it take for you to recover from it? Thank you.
