Slow degradation of my vision. Seeing a retina specialist

Posted by Bonita @bonitav, May 19, 2015

After a slow degradation of my vision, especially close as in computer usage, saw optician and after eye exam, received new lenses. Not much improvement, so I scheduled appointment with an ophthalmologist, who diagnosed very dry eyes, but with bleeding behind the retina in my left eye. Referred me to a retina specialist whom I see tomorrow. Any ideas what could be causing this other than retina detachment? About two years ago, had laser treatment for floaters. Wonder if this is related to that procedure. Can this also be related to a vascular problem? Thanks!

Hi @kaoru1106 -- since macular degeneration is a retinal issue, I've merged your post with this one in which members talk about a number of retinal issues. I thought that here you would meet the most members who might have some input on your macular degeneration, first in your left and then your right eye, with ranibizumab (Lucentis) injections each time. Please meet @peach414144 @hopeful33250 @rosemarya @bonitav @joan1234 and others. Hoping they will have some thoughts to share.

Your determination to be very on top of this is admirable.

If you are interested in reading some Mayo Clinic information on wet macular degeneration, here it is: https://mayocl.in/2lZeL7J.

@kaoru1106 -- are you looking for published clinical research on wet macular degeneration to read, or an open clinical trial to participate in?

Hello @kaoru1106 Kay,

I'm glad that you posted your concerns about macular degeneration on Mayo Connect. While I have never had that diagnosis it is certainly understandable that you would be concerned over any problem involving your vision! You are certainly to be applauded for your attempts to learn as much about this problem as you can and to be interested in participating in clinical trials. Did your doctor know of any clinical trials that you might take part in?

As Lisa mentioned in her post, another mentor on Connect, @rosemarya, has had some injections and she will undoubtedly respond to your concerns as well.

I look forward to hearing from you again and knowing what steps you are taking.

Teresa

Any threat to the eyes is probably the most scary thing that can happen.

Hi .. I have early stage Macular Degeneration but the only treatment so far was injections for 'floaters' and one injection for the MD. I take Preservison 2 vitamins upon my retina specialist's recommendation. Recently I had cataract surgery in both eyes. Have a followup appointment with the retina specialist tomrrow. Hoping there's no bad news.

Wishing you the best in your search for a clinical research opening. Take care. Bonnie.

Last September I was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration on my left eye. I was going to school when I work full time as a medical coder, I spend long hours in front of computer. First, I thought I was having eye strain because of watching a computer monitor for a long time every day, but one day I noticed I saw a black circle in the middle with my left eye. I have had a cornea abrasion previously and had a similar vision change so I made an appointment with eye doctor. It tuned out I had Macular Degeneration. He said mine was a wet type which progresses rapidly. I am 54 years old, and he said 54 years old is young to have AMD but I got it because I am very near sighted. I got Lucentis injection and it helped to get some vision back. However, he told me there is no cure for Macular degeneration. My fear is whether my right eye would get it or not. He said there is possibility have both eyes...Last month I noticed my right eye vision started being very distorted. I called him right away. He said I got it on my right eye as well...I got Lucentisis injection on my right eye and doing ok for now. I have a great doctor and I am determined to do everything I can to slow the progression!! I am now looking for some clinical research on Wet type macular degeneration. Macular Degeneration is very scary, but I believe there will be a solution someday!!

@kaoru1106, I admire your strength of attitude. That will be in your favor because it is vital to remain steadfast in maintaining your treatments as prescribed for your eye care.
I do not have MC. I am treated by a Retina Specialist who works with my opthamologist. My condition condition has resulted in a donut hole visual field in my affected right eye. I have regular appointments at 4-6 month intervals with my Retina doc in addition to 6 month intervals with opthamologist. I am also monitored for glaucoma - eye pressure - and must use nightly eye drops to maintain a normal pressure. The Retina doctor monitors and administers the Lucentis injections. I usually get it in a series of 4 months, followed by a varying span where it is not necessary. There are eye scans that show what is going with my retina.. The goal is to prevent further damage.
I feel confident about my care because the Retina practice is associated with both Johns Hopkins and Univ of Ky Research and Practices.

What kind of follow-up is your doctor recommending for you?
Have you been examined by a Retina Specialist?
Rosemary

I am sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with your appointment. You can always get another opinion if you feel uncertain about what you were told.

I hope that you are able to get the information that you need.
