Reversal of a fundoplication

Posted by Pawsboy9 @pawsboy9, Aug 5, 2012

I had a hernia and the fundoplication done in February as post this my chest is on fire. Going back to see the surgeon who did it on Tuesday. Has anybody had the same experience? If this guy does not have a answer heading for Mayo.

Thanks
Dennis

I've not had your surgery, but I've had a problem with thrush of the throat and mouth recently. My ENT physician said to increase my water intake to 64-80 oz. a day and I should not have to worry about recurrence of thrush. I think this is good advice so am letting you know as drinking more may help your recurring thrush. I agree the Nystatin is pretty tough to swallow. It does provide relief of symptoms so I really appreciate it. Gail B. Ledesma

Thank ypu for your advice. I'm on 4 mg prednisone for my rheumatoid arthritis and as long as i take any starch or sugar the thrush will form on the tongue. A quickie fix is to take about 20% hydrogen proxide and 80 % water and shake well in a bottle. Then take a paper towel wetted with this mix and scrub the surface of the tongue to get rid of the thrush. Then take a dry paper towel and dry the tongue. Then you will see the thrush rubbed off the tongue. But the back part of the tongue you don't know. If you try to gargle with this mix it will burn your throat. Thrush is a fungus. Are you on any steroid that might be causing this?... thanks....kozlo52

Hi @kozlo52, not from a nissen, but @rhodan97 has been battling reoccurring thrush. @rhodan97, do you have any insights that you can share?

I had a Nissen Fundoplication procedure done last Oct. I have not have success with it at all. The wrap was to tight and I have to have a dilation done almost every two months. I am looking at have a reversal done and wonder if anyone has had this done and if so, did things improve Thank You

Yes I did. Be careful also what you eat. Gassy foods made me miserable because I couldn't burp or belch. Kathy

Not to long after I started eating foods again. I do occasionally suffer from IBS, think it goes along with having idiopathic gastroparesis.

I've been in hospital for a week, because I have other symtoms and they couldn't find anything wrong after lots of tests I've been told its Been a virus. However have come home and still have very loose motions. Time will tell. But I certainly wasn't warned about and potential change in bowel habits. Did you have this Happen straight after surgery or did it follow later

Right after surgery then it became better. I can't imagine what it is except for irritable bowel syndrome or Crohn's disease. Have you been checked for that? Kathy

has anyone had a 360 degree wrap reversed to a 270 degree wrap with success? My 360 wrap was done last nov.1,2016 and has been a nightmare ever since. I have had 4 endoscopies, 3 dilations . I can eat food ok , bit as soon as i am done the burn starts. the thoracic surgeon would like to do another 48 hr bravo test to see what is going on. Initially it was thought that the wrap was too tight, based on all the endoscopies. I understand if i get a 270 degree wrap i have to start all over with liquid diet, etc. and then more possible dilations. After my gallbladder came out in july27, 2017 it was so enlarged that 4 holes had to be used laproscoppically to get it out. Since Nov. 2016 i have had 8 holes punched in me. after the gallbaladder was out my heartburn and nausea increased. The antacids do not work. Also my GI doctor said that if i stay on prevacid 60 mg i might develope dementia, osteoperosis, kidney disease. The PPI's and H2 blockers are creating more problems than not. Does anyone have an official FDA document the covers all this. Pleaase respond if anyone has had the change from 360 to 270 degree nissen. I also have spurs between c3-c4 in my neck which need treatment, but i can't do anything yet due to this continuing heartburn issue. any help or thoughts?....thank you... kozlo52

Hi my name is Deb.I had my Nissan done over 3 years ago .I have had nothing but pain ,in upper chest ,upper back ,terrible heartburn.Feel like i constantly have soar throats and something is stuck .Always bloated and whole body swollen .Food and drinks constantly get stuck .Takes almost 20 minutes of me feeling like i am choking and getting food with lots of flem to come back up .Since the wrap , I have been diagnosed with Bloating syndrome , IBS syndrome dumping syndrome, one doctor says I have a espogeal spasms one says no i don't .I have had my esphogus dilated more times then i can count .
Gone back to my surgeon 4 times in last 3 years since .Last two times i went to him said we could loosen it but want second opinion .So of causecsends me to his partner. He does edg says yeah it's to tight then does barium swollow ,which shows my esphogus closing up .But says on it's not your wrap it's espogeal spasms .Im like really .So go back to surgeon now he saying i really don't want to do it "Go back to your GI Doctor see what she can do .I am getting so tired of all these doctors .I am in constant pain all the time .All i want is to either loosen the thing or up do it .Does any one in Colorado or close to Colorado know of any surgeons that will undo the wrap .I have not felt like my self since this thing .

I'm kozlo52. I am still considering having a nissen reversal after 1 year. I have been getting heartburn again that does not respond to antacids, as well as bloating, lack of appetite. I finally had my post operative bravo 48 hour ph test and the rsults shocked me. My ph is normal. I asked my surgeon , where is the heartburn coming from? He said that i have a "hyperactive esophagus" and that i should get a hypnotist to hypnotize me into the point where this pain comes on after eating my brain will ignore sending out a pain message. Kelly dubois, have you ever heard of this? I In a search of literature it shows that this can be a phenoma for some people. it is treated with anti depressants like klonopin or hypnosis. Note after my gallbladder was removed 7/27/2017, i noticed an increase in "sensed heartburn" activity as well as nausea. The biopsies taken had shown that i had some bile in the stomach. The surgeon is prescribing something for this. If i take an atavan, the heartburn will diminish. any advice would be appreciated. thanks.....paul@kozlo52.
