I’ve had a hip replacement & rev., my mom had a hip replacement 7 or 8 yrs ago. She has pain in her thigh as well. I had it briefly, off & on. Her Dr. told her it was from the stem…hers was a little longer than what they had intended to use…but they used what they had & that is what they say is causing her pain

Have they done recent imaging? My friend with a too large stem had micro-fractures, treated by girdling the bone in permanent mesh, and the bone is growing to it. Her pain is less, but not gone.

I’m not sure about recent imaging, but the Dr. was up front with her about the stem being too long….to ME, that is really something in itself. None of my Dr’s would admit to making a mistake.
Not that it’s really a mistake, he said it’s the shortest he could get (then). I appreciate any Dr’s honesty. Plus, she is super thin, practically skin & bone. She’s had a rough few years. Slipped on wet concrete & tore her rotator cuff, had colon cancer & on & on…😩

@vincej - Ouch! That would make me very unhappy. Welcome to Mayo Connect, where you get to talk to lots of people who have been through hip replacements. I have had both hips replaced, so I can identify with the concern you must be feeling.
How was the once you got up and started to move around? Any change or did it go away? If so, I would guess that you slept on a nerve. If not, can you try gently moving it around to relieve the pain?

67 yo male with anterior h.r. Sharp thigh and buttock spasms year late
I had my right hip done in 2020,year later I started getting super spasms in my thigh, buttock, and lower back. Dr. gave me pills but I don’t want to take pills.if I walk a lot or stand a lot it seems to kick in,only lasts a few seconds, but comes back if I take the weight off of my heel, put the weight back on my heel it goes away most of the time…then it seems I have to walk it off and it’s like it never happened.does not do it when I hit the couch after dinner or all night sleeping it’s fine, even in the morning, some days are good and some painful…..I had the anterior hip replacement done,I’m hearing that the posterior may be better because it doesn’t mess with the nerves as much.I had a cordazone shot,an epidural, still going to PT and nothing is helping. I see in forums that some doctors don’t do the anterior way anymore because of the nerves……..and what I’m seeing is I’m being past around like an insurance wallet and not getting an answer…how can nobody know what this is or what’s causing it????? Or how to fix it! I just wanted to grow old gracefully and play with the grand kids with out pain! Help me!! And all the others that can’t get answers!

Hello @randy427, I'm sorry to hear you are still having issues after the hip replacement. I have a complicated hip history that I will not repeat here, but it led to pain issues even after the implant itself had healed.

What really helped me turn the corner was a referral to a rehabilitation physical therapist. Not just a clinic that does the after-surgery routine therapeutic exercises. You need a specialty center whose therapists have PhD's and advanced training in kinesiology, physical therapy, manual manipulation, or myofascial release. What I got was a full assessment of my body mechanics, gait, joint mobility and flexibility. Then a custom program of land and water therapy plus home exercises. It took 3 months of hard work with the therapists, and another 3 months of work at home, with monthly check-ins, to overcome the leg & back pain.

Do you think you can get a referral from the surgeon?

Randy,

Is it possible you're suffering from sciatica? Some of the symptoms, including pain in the buttock, thigh, and lower back could be from sciatica. I'd at least ask the Dr. if it's possible, although I doubt he/she would miss something like that.

All the best. Joe

Randy, I add my welcome. I moved your discussion about late appearing pain and spasms a year after hip replacement to this existing discussion:
- Has anyone had sharp thigh pain after hip replacement: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/has-anyone-had-sharp-thigh-pain-after-hip-replacement/

I did this so you can read previous helpful posts and connect easily with others like you.

Hi,

I am almost three months out from my anterior hip replacement and two weeks ago started having burning thigh pain, tingling and numbness and pain in foot. My foot on the operative side turns red after walking. I went for my checkup yesterday and my doctor told me that it was nerve pain. It can get pretty painful at times and the doc said it could take six to nine months to go away. Yikes, not looking forward to it. I am interested in your suggestion of a rehab physical therapist. My current physical therapist gives me the usual post surgery exercises. I don't know if there is such a place where I live. Did your doctor give you a referral? Did you try any medications or anything else? Just wondering what you tried before the rehab. The doc suggested massaging my thigh and hip, then if that doesn't really work, gabapentin. If the medication and massage doesn't work, nerve ablation.

I’m 10 weeks out after my right hip was replaced. I too have a red foot after walking all day. Sleep is always disturbed by the pain. Garbapentin doesn’t work for me. I keep Sarna cream in the fridge, and apply it to my burning foot. It usually soothes the burning and I can get back to sleep. It would be nice to have an uninterrupted night’s sleep though.
