Yes I’ve had that , I think it’s adjusting to the pin/ shaft , sort of like phantom pains . Although always check your bloods for infection I do every 3 mins .

Hi Faith, In 2018, I broke my hip from a fall while on vacation in Canada. At the hospital in Trois Riveres, I rec'd a "partial" hip replacement. I don't have pain from the hip, but I guess it has gravitated to severe spinal stenosis. After 2years I started epidurals. The first did nothing, but after the 2nd one I am experiencing neuropathy. The Neurologist did an EMG and diagnosed I needed surgery on my back. Physical therapy hasn't helped, so next try is acupuncture. Never give up!!

Hi Sharon - After my 5th hip replacement surgery, I was in the grips of severe back pain as well, but couldn't face another surgery or epidural.

After consultation with my Ortho surgeon, he referred me for comprehensive gait therapy and water and land-based PT. His concern was that I had limped so long on my bad hips (one was actually "frozen" before surgery) and had other complications, that I never really relearned to walk correctly. This wasn't just any typical PT, it was through a rehab institute, and they were marvelous. After a couple months of twice weekly PT and weekly pool therapy, the pain level became manageable and life went on.

Fast forward 8 years - I was in pain again and saw a PT specialized in pain management for several months - got a custom stretching and exercise program, myofascial release of the worst points, and I'm back on track.

I have also used acupuncture and chiropractic care as part of my management strategy, as well as occasional oral or injected (but not in my spine) steroids to calm huge inflammatory flares.

I will continue to pursue PT, alternative strategies and pain management as long as I can in place of surgery.

Hi @paddledavid, welcome to Connect.
I moved your message to this thread started a little while ago by @Cjropes who was also experiencing sharp thigh pain after hip replacement surgery. I'm also tagging members @marysapp @marikat @stumpy @learningtolive2 who have had hip replacement surgery so that they can join the discussion.

FYI, here's some info about Meralgia Paresthetica that Dave mentions http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/meralgia-paresthetica/basics/definition/con-20030852

Dave, Is taking medication the long-term plan? What other options did your doctor suggest? I really hope @Cjropes got some answers to share here.

I had total right hip replacement in April 2019. Prior to that I had a bad fall, fell flat on my bottom after being knocked down by a great Dane. Approximately one week later I begin to feel pressure in my low back and right hip and I wasn’t standing straight up,instead leaning forward. My right hip, thigh, & medial groin Very sensitive to touch. Standing and walking made matters worse my right hip & Lateral thigh would start to burn & tingle, The longer I stood the more intense the burning pain and pressure became. The only relief is after a right SI joint injection, I have had intense physical therapy with no results to this issue. I have had MRIs, an ultrasound,EMG. I just want to be able to stand straight and walk without a cane and to get relief from this low back pressure that is exhausting to say the least. I am a registered Nurse of many years & can’t understand why no one has diagnosed my condition plus the bad fall I had does not seem to be important to anyone on my medical team.

I had a hip replacement surgery August 23, 2021.I was doing really well the first three weeks and then woke up one day with sharp pains so I can’t just use a cane anymore. I called my doctor and they explained that it could be just change is causing the pain and I said I was doing so well but they don’t seem to have an explanation. Has anyone else experienced this

How frustrating to go from walking with a cane to needing a walker, and having extra pain. I have had 5 hip replacement surgeries and a variety of other ortho surgeries over the past 20 years. Every single one was different than the others. One thing I can assure you is that sudden pain so severe recovery goes backwards is cause to be concerned.

It can be something out of place, a pinched nerve or muscle, a fracture, and infection....or nothing. If it is continuing, it's a good idea to get it checked out in person to eliminate serious problems, then to work with your doctor and a therapist to get back to recovery.

Good luck, please let me know what you learn from the doctor.

I had Total Hip Replacement July 22, 2021. Almost immediately I began having hamstring cramps in the operative thigh. I don’t know if you mean this specifically or pain in general in your thigh. My doctor also does not know what’s causing this. My cramping is when I’m lying down mainly. I’ve been doing physical therapy, acupuncture, using a TENS unit and a topical cream with the initials DB. (Not sure if I name it in this forum.). I also take Arthritis Strength Acetaminophen. The acupuncture, TENS unit, and cream have been the most help along with stretching. Even if you’re pain is non-hamstring these should also help.
I can add a few more comments but don’t know if your problem is with the hamstring. Feel free to respond and tell me if it’s hamstring related.

An excellent physical therapist can help as they have exercises and things they can try when nerves are involved. I have one of those therapists and he has seen me through reverse total shoulder and now a TKR can’t say enough about having a great therapist. Having said that we have to follow through and do the work. Have always gone to my therapist instead of surgeon after said surgeries because I can call or email him any time. I’ve been fortunate enough when I ask them both questions that I actually get the same answers from both therapist and surgeon! If he wants me to ask surgeon anything he sends questions thru me to surgeon.
