Glutathione: What dosage do you use? Where do you get it?

Posted by kathleenlp @kathleenlp, Apr 4, 2022

Hi! Yes, I have ALL these but doing surprisingly well...mostly asymptomatic. Got HMPV at Christmas, pretty sick but bounced back. On a mission to try some out of the box treatments to keep me well. If you have used glutathione in a nebulizer, can you tell me who (type doctor) prescribed and what dosage etc. and did you think it helped? Also Sodium Chloride.

Morning! I have received much help here! I finally found a functional doctor and I like her so far! I could not get anyone to prescribe the glutathione but she will do so but some confusion on normal dosing for nebulizer and also which pharmacy to use. I thought I saw someone got it from Mayo pharmacy and I called and they said YES but she said she called the compounding Mayo pharmacy and they told her NO they do not do glutathione for the nebulizer. ??
Nan here has been a big help and her dose looks to be .5 mil/200 mg daily. (her Functional Medical group compunds/sells it) Can some of you share your dosage for nebulizer AND where do you safely have it compounded? I am in Houston area but many places ship including Mayo. Thank you!!

Hi Kathleen,
I moved your follow-up question to the discussion you originally started about glutathione
- Glutathione: What dosage do you use? Where do you get it? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mac-abscessus-bronchiectasis-and-aspergillus-glutathione/

I did this so you can reconnect with @nannette @wolfplanetzero and others. I'm also tagging @onamission @glendamoseley1 @dc1950, who have mentioned using or asking about glutathione.

Quoting @sueinmn from another related discussion here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/612379/

"Glutathione and NAC are closely related, and I cannot find any definitive information, but would conclude from my reading that use of both is unnecessary as NAC converts to glutathione in the liver as it is digested. I did find a couple of cautions stating that use can lead to elevated magnesium levels, low blood pressure, decreased clotting after surgery, altered effectiveness of diabetes and heart meds."

This study looks like it helps explain the relationship between NAC and glutathione.

Thank you so much Colleen! I'm still learning and figuring out how to use this platform. All assistance is appreciated!!
I did search around for info and remarks on the glutathione. It's confusing as some swear by it and others opposed. The functional medicine doctors seem to like it. Pulmonary docs do not. Difficult decisions! Thanks again Colleen!

Hi Kathleen, I'm also debating whether to start neb glutathione with 7% saline solution. I wonder if you have more insight from your research and what you have decided on. Appreciate your inputs. Thanks and hope you are feeling well!

I, too, have been to functional doctors and enjoy using alternative therapies. They help relax me and I believe they also create a healing environment. However, I am not comfortable with nebulizing medications like glutathione or colloidal silver. We are learning more and more about the lung microbiome and research is pointing to the relationship of lung bacteria as a possible way of understanding why some people get infections and others do not. Therefore, I am hesitant to inhale anything into my lungs that might impact the micobiome. As a rule, if I feel I cannot share it with my pulmonologist, I resist trying it.

Best,
Linda Esposito

Hi Caontm

Yes, I just started...it wasn't easy to obtain!! Firstly, I think the saline solution is vital and I have done well with that...many comments that it will keep you well. I use it right after any big gathering or crowded get together. I shoot for twice daily.
So my glutathione is 200 mg per 1 ml. So far I found it gives me a heavy chest (related to asthma??) My asthma is nearly non existent...never had an attack just the heavy chest.. rarely. So I cut back to .5ml once daily and no problem with that...maybe you have to work up to the higher dose but I will continue to do this for a while. I hope this helps!!

Hi @caontm, I've been nebulizing with glutathione for a couple of years along with my saline but I don't do the glutathione every day because it isn't cheap. I get it from my functional medicine doctor. I use 1ml at a time when I use it. Does it work? Who knows. But I haven't had MAC return in a few years and I've had no progression for almost four years. Hi Nan!!
Happy Fourth! Hope you are well!
I am just circling back on the glutathione. I was so focused and determined to get it and did as you know. I just think I am not tolerating it well. I started at the 1 cc dose, just once a day and was experiencing a very heavy chest which is unusual for me. It was almost continuous. So I skipped a day...then went down to .5 dose once and did okay a few times at that dose then heavy chest started again. So I skipped a couple days...went away. So tried again and heavy chest returned even at the lower dose. Have you ever noticed this when you use it?
I remember reading an article/study when I researched the glutathione that said it can make asthma symptoms worse in some people especially very asymptomatic people. I have never had Asthma symptoms except the very infrequent heavy chest. Anyway, I think I am going to have to stop the G. Bummed.
Also do you practice airway clearance techniques, Nan? If so, what do you do? These also seem to aggravate the heck out of my lungs and rarely do I have any results. If I do it is a miniscule amount of clearish to slightly pale yellow mucus. Sometimes I actually feel something move when I do the coughs after but then nothing makes it out. One pulmonary told me don't do it but they really emphasis the importance of this in everything I read.
One exciting thing is the head of a prestigious medical school here is taking me on as a patient of sorts. He is a friend of a friend. President of this University and also a pulmonary specialist that did his fellowship at National Jewish! He has assembled a team of specialists to review all my history and I will meet with them Wed. I have already had 2 one hour calls with him. He is so sharp and very thorough. I am curious to see what they come up with and then what from there....not sure if this is a one time thing (sort of a consult) but he said worse case he would get me into Denver. But he does not especially feel I will need that. He was happy with everything I am doing but had NO COMMENT on the glutathione 8-))))
Thanks, Nan!!

@kathleenlp Hi Kathleen, no I've never had any heaviness in my chest when using glutathione. And as for airway clearance techniques, I just do postural drainage by lying on my back and then doing some huff coughing which pushes the phlegm up the airways. I've been pretty lucky with just doing that and haven't had to use an aerobika or a vest. And my pulmonologist kind of rolled his eyes when I asked him about glutathione.....I think there's just not enough scientific evidence on it yet. It's an alternative thing to do and I'm an alternative kinda gal. I'm not scared of trying things and I do and have had no problems thus far. And I do research and make decisions on my own. I mean when I think about it, my first pulmonologist didn't even want to prescribe saline solution for goodness sakes and I asked him to look it up for me and that I wanted to do it, so I did and that was six years ago. And it's probably the best thing that ever happened to a lot of us. And it was alternative at that point. Nan
