COVID vaccines and neuropathy

Posted by cue @cue, Feb 15, 2021

I am 85 with small fiber neuropathy that is getting worse. My neurologist thought it would be a good idea for me to wait with the covid vaccine and not be first in line to see how it affected other people with neuropathy. Probably because it is a new technology. Has anyone had a problem with neuropathy after receiving the vaccine? If so, which vaccine?

I’ve had PN for many years, but we’ll controlled with medication. First Pfizer vaccine Aug 2nd and 12 hours later symptoms worsened and went up into both lower legs. Dr advised me, this would go away and I needed to get 2nd vaccine. Six hours later PN symptoms intensified and moved up both legs also involving both hands and arms. Currently, I have PN in both arms, hands, legs, feet, trunk and face. Neurologist and primary care dr, both feel the vaccines triggered a hyper immune response and “may” go away in time.

I never had neuropathy. I had back surgery with a fusion 2 years ago and it has caused me so many problems. I got my first 2 COVID Pfizer shots and only symptom was my left arm pit would get really red and then peal. I got my booster and now I have neuropathy which I have never ever had before. I'm not sure if it is from the booster but since I never had neuropathy before and then to get it after my booster makes me think the booster caused the neuropathy. Anyone else feel like this? I'm so frustrated because my surgery was a failed back surgery and now onto of this I have to deal with painful neuropathy.

I had some neuropathy due to a spinal cord tumor. It mostly went away after removal of the tumor, but the Pfizer shots really fired it up again. Now-three months after the Pfizer booster-it has mostly gone away. It seems-from the comments on this page- fairly certain that there is an association between the vaccine and neuropathy flares. I hope that your neuropathy also fades as time goes by!

I had my Moderna booster almost 6 weeks ago and the neuropathic pain and cramps seem to lessen a bit now, but in fact it's still on and off...high humidity and up it flares again. Let's hope we don't need a booster too often, or that they can tweak it a bit so it doesn't hurt people with a compromised immune system the way it does now. Not sure if that's possible though.

My neuropathy began after my booster shot. Never had it before I got the Pfizer COVID vaccine.

My small fiber neuropathy symptoms intensified as I got Moderna shots 1,2 and 3.

Mine began around the same time as initial shot and has gotten worse Wish they would look into this and see if this is an issue. Also on statin so I figure its one of the two.

My neuropathy started after second Moderna shot, but I had Covid 4 months prior. Have seen Neurologist several times, but no real help. I’m not in pain, just numbness and tingling in feet and toes during the day, frostbite-like cold burning at night. I do notice heat and humidity make it worse. I live in Florida, but have been in S Dak for holidays visiting my Dad, and the cold sure makes a difference, in a good way!! Had the shot in April, no relief as time goes by. Just had my bloodwork done, still positive for antibodies, 15+, whatever that means, so I’m waiting on the booster.

I have a question for those who have experienced either new onset neuropathy, or neuropathy flares post vaccine. Or, if the question just generally applies to your neuropathy please comment. How much twitching, if any, do you experience with your neuropathy? Other than the burning and stinging in my feet, legs, hands and sometimes other random body areas, twitching and a slight feeling of weakness in my right leg has been a very predominant thing for me. I know that some neuropathy does cause twitching. And I do have nerve compression issues at S1 which my neurologist theorizes got very ramped up after the vaccine. I just wondered how much anyone else experiences this. Please refer back to my earlier posts if interested in my back story. I would also like to say thank you for the support of this group. The past year has been so very difficult and reading some of the stories and comments here has at least let me know that I am not alone and not crazy! I pray that each and every one of us has a marvelous 2022!
