Is restless leg (RLS) related to serotonin syndrome? Tips for relief?

Posted by rockrod @rockrod, Sep 5, 2020

Hi folks, I frequently suffer with restless leg syndrome, drives me crazy. Can’t sit still, can’t sleep, it’s ruining my life. Any tips for relieving would be gratefully received. Another question, is restless leg syndrome related in any way to seratonin syndrome?

Medicines that increase serotonin bioavailability (antidepressants) have been associated with increased risk or aggravation of RLS. Fellow members like @rwlovell @davidlyle7 and @kdo0827 might be able to add some thoughts here.

Rod, have you had a recent change in medications?

RLS is a product of dopamine dysfunction, NOT serotonin. I used to take Pramipexole, now I take Lyrica 200 mg. Works just fine.

Thanks for your interest. I am on quite a lot of medication including Mirtazapine, Tramadol and Fentanyl patches. I’ve read that a combination of any two of these medications, depending on dosage can lead to Seratonin Syndrome. From what I can gather symptoms can be very similar to RLS.

Somewhere I read that using a hot pad would help at night. It works. I have also found a product from magnalife called relaxing leg cream, it works well too

@avmcbellar Thanks for asking me my recommendations. This is all I can address as I don't know what those other,s are . Since your already taking Potassium and Magnesium which I take at dinner ,drink plenty of water . Sometimes some leg exercises help and of course Dill pickle juice when the RLS start . It has to be the Dill juice not sweet . Its an old remedy but works . You must be asking this for your Mom ? your picture isn,t of a 90 year old I had to upgrade my email address so just catching up with questions sorry to be late in answering.

@lioness I appreciate you getting back to me. The other diagnoses are hypertension and diabetes. I know pickles are high in salt. My mother can try pickle juice. Drinking lots of water would help dilute the salt content. Thanks for the suggestion. No worries with answering emails. They can can get overwhelming at times. I didn’t feel your response was late at all. Like I said you get to it when you can.
