Is restless leg (RLS) related to serotonin syndrome? Tips for relief?

Posted by rockrod @rockrod, Sep 5, 2020

Hi folks, I frequently suffer with restless leg syndrome, drives me crazy. Can’t sit still, can’t sleep, it’s ruining my life. Any tips for relieving would be gratefully received. Another question, is restless leg syndrome related in any way to seratonin syndrome?

Thanks for the reply. I have severe neuropathy therefore the gabapentin. My neurologist tested my iron levels which were fine. I also have sleep apnea. I can't remember why I could not take requip. Maybe I should try it again. I will speak to my neurologist. Very happen,you are doing well. Cathy

@mcd123 hello, Cathy. I am surely doing well re RLS and since getting off the several heavy meds I mentioned. I can't tell you what good improvements I experienced from my getting off the meds. My brain is much happier! Fog is gone. Gone!
Energy level improved...etc. But, that's me. May be worth investigating w/ your doctors.
I have added Medical Marijuana, 1:1 tincture, 1 dropper at night for anxiety, pain, insomnia, general overall help for the night. I also use CBD, 800mg, cream on my legs/feet/hands, for neuropathy and arthritis pain. Amazingly, it helps. I take 3, 750mg Robaxin to help with muscle pain, etc. It helps the soft tissue discomfort and I'm so much better.
Now, so you know, I have
just been diagnosed with Vasculitis and other serious issues and facing a lot of questions and not such great answers re quality and length of life...but, those med changes have made a huge difference in my life.
I do hope my experiences help you and others maybe improve your life.
Blessings.

@mcd123 and all..
Also, re RLS, has your doc ever tested your magnesium level? Potassium, magnesium and sodium levels, maybe others, are really important for this issue. I take supplements for pot, mag, zinc, b-complex, biotin, Centrum Silver for Wpmen....all help. I give myself a b-12 shit 2x monthly.have very low b's...
.all this is important and it's a balancing issue.

Be well. Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth @ess77 you have provided great information for the importance of having balanced nutrition. Proper nutrition does have an impact on health. You must not have the intrinsic factor in your digestive system to be giving yourself a subcutaneous injection of vitamin B12. I have known people who were not able to get B12 orally i.e. through foods or vitamins because of this issue. People do need to look at their diets for any deficiencies and be careful in taking supplements because some are water soluble, which do not store in the body, and others, such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, are fat soluble meaning the body stores them in the fat. Anyone in question should get the advice of their PCP for help.

I’ve had RLSfor decades. Didnt know what it was called until a sleep test I got for apnea. My doc prescribed Trazadone, a mild antidepressant and it’s worked for me all these years. Taking it before bed on an empty stomach makes you very sleepy, a good thing for me.

What kind of creme do you use?

@mcd123 and all...
Hello, Cathy. I use several creams st different times depending upon my pain level, location of pain, etc. Voltaren is an nsaid now etc, works well but I am careful not to use too often and you should ck w/doc.

Searched, learned from many on this site, @johnbishop , @artscaping , and others who've dealt with this pain for years and done so much research.

I got 800mg CBDcream from Garden of Life and Papa and Barkley's online. Both seem to work, but I prefer Garden of Life fragrance. Both smell like a light Mm, but are pleasant. They help my hands/wrists/feet re arthritis pain. I use it on my hands off and on all day as needed.

I also get The Wise Men from Walmart online, frankincense and myrrh and coconut oil balm. It's really pleasant. Like it. This is great help and very surprising.

So, I choose based on the need. It also is very relaxing, peaceful, helps my mind to do this for myself and to lightly massage my legs, feet, hands, etc.

There you go. Hope that helps you out. May you be well and find freedom from pain.
Blessings, Elizabeth

I am also suffering a lot from restless legs syndrome since April. Mine seems to be due to lumbar nerve compression rather than dopamine deficiency. Other than powerful drugs, the only thing that works for me is a heating pad. I wrap it around my bad leg when falling asleep or needing to work at my desk. At night, I have the heating pad on a timer to avoid causing a fire. It works well in allowing me to get to sleep.

My husband has muscular dystrophy and he was having restless leg syndrome. His doctor prescribed gabapentin, and he is more comfortable and is sleeping much better.
