Is restless leg (RLS) related to serotonin syndrome? Tips for relief?

Posted by rockrod @rockrod, Sep 5, 2020

Hi folks, I frequently suffer with restless leg syndrome, drives me crazy. Can’t sit still, can’t sleep, it’s ruining my life. Any tips for relieving would be gratefully received. Another question, is restless leg syndrome related in any way to seratonin syndrome?

My daughter and I have both been helped by the new weighted blankets. Good luck!

RLS is a nightmare!
I just watched a few videos about RLS and BRAIN iron deficiency.
Both doctors pointed out that the iron supplement should be given as an IV.
Has anyone been treated with the IV iron?

A sleep study showed that RLS was preventing me from getting a restful sleep.,I was prescribed gabapentin and that seems to have taken care of the problem

I was prescribed a drug called Requip (generic: ropinirole) and it works beautifully to stop my legs from keeping me awake. Here's a link to information about this drug: https://www.drugs.com/requip.html

@snottykitty I took that for several years, and it worked well. However, it lost its effectiveness for me, and I had to replace it with something else. Prampexrole (sp?) now even that is becoming increasingly ineffective.
My legs are so bad that the RLS starts late afternoon and I can’t even sit for any length of time (when meds aren’t working).

I’m typing this in the early morning 5am and it’s dark so my spelling isn’t really clear lol 😂

On the non pharmaceutical side, I find relief by standing on a whole body vibration plate. I do this for 5-10 minutes after my evening hot tub soak, then for 5 minutes when it wakes me up. That usually buys me a quiet hour , sometimes two. I am supplementing with oral iron ( 50 mg. Elemental iron every other day. After 3 moths, there has been a reduction in symptoms by about 50%. It now doesn’t start until around 12 pm and will wind down around 3:30 am. At least I can manage 5-6 hours of sleep between the active times. I get my iron levels rechecks to see if I can keep going or if it’s time to back down.
I have taken Pramipexole in the past, now that is reserved for long travels. I failed Lyrica and Gabapentin. I may take a THC gummy if I have signs of a bad night and that does work well, but make me unmotivated to do much the next day, so that for occasional use

Inderal a/k/a propranolol stopped mine.

I’m glad it helped you! I had my back fused at 3 & 4 and I was recovering at home after several days in the hospital when I got bad restless legs and Gabapentin did not help. I tried Requip (generic Ropinerole) and then I could finally sit still and sleep. I take 2mg extended release in the morning, 1 mg immediate release at 3 pm and 2mg ext. release at 7pm so I can go to bed at 9pm and sleep. I am a very active person and now even after open heart surgery a year ago the Gapenpentin is working fine.

I had RLS some years ago and was prescibed Reqip 0.5mg at night. Solved RLS and helped me sleep at night.

Magnesium and a massager really help for me.
