Is it advisable and safe for a transplant patient to get the new shingles vaccine, Shinglex?

I suspect a lot depends on what organ, which drugs you are taking and your health experiences you have had since transplant. All things best answered by the transplant team.

Aren't we the lucky ones! Who else has a whole team of medical experts looking out for us.❤

@rosemarya The only time I wish they hadn't been looking out for me so well was when they told me we should not take our vacation to St. Martin. That was early, before there were any restrictions, so I was surprised but I guess they knew what was coming.

I also always have had a real positive feeling when I get the advice from my team at Mayo. I actually watched my wife go thru getting them. Not very pleasant! So I couldn't remember if I had chickenpox as a kid so I asked my Mom (who has since passed away) and she couldn't remember. So I decided to get them. Well my Mom was good about writing in our baby books things like that and just recently my sister had been going thru so of my parents stuff and found our baby books. She sent it to me and low and behold I did have the chickenpox. So maybe I deflected a bullet. At least so far so good.

@danab It's not measles that shingles is related to, it's chicken pox.

@azdan99, Thank you for bringing up the topic of shingles shot. It is a good reminder for all of us to keep our immunizations up to date. Have you had the opportunity to discuss it with your doctor yet?

@azdan99, I want to commend you for how well you have taken care of yourself and your heart transplant for 17 years. You are an expert by experience and I have a question for you. What advice do you have for someone who is starting out with a new transplanted organ?

Is it too early to tell if the new vaccine being tested for Covid is safe for transplants?

REPLY

I have no knowledge of any transplant patients contracting Covid-19. I have no plans of getting a vaccine for something that I have no knowledge of any of us contracting the virus to begin with. Just my personal opinion of course. Have a great rest of your day.

@jerrynord, I believe it is still too early for any safety decision about the COVID-19 vaccine. When I as at Mayo in June, (a long time ago by COVID-19 time) I asked my PA about the potential for a safe vaccine for us transplant recipients. Her reply was that the transplant doctors are watching it closely. I am completely confident that if/when a vaccine is approved and available, that we will will be able to turn to our transplant team for guidance.

Jerry, right now, I am thinking about the annual flu shot, and will get it when it is available in my area. Prevention is always our best defense, and as transplant recipients we are ahead of the general public because we already know the importance of hand washing, safe distancing, and not handshaking, etc.
Jerry, It is great talking to you. How are you spending your days while staying safe?
