Sleep without trazadone

Posted by mommabird74 @mommabird74, Apr 17, 2019

I’ve been taking trazadone for 15 years for sleep at 50 mg. I have been following a diet of no sugar, gluten or diary to come off all medicine. Also run 3 miles a day. I have successfully come off lexapro 10 mg after a long taper and feel better than when I was on meds. My problem now is tapering the trazadone. I have been able to decrease to 25 mg but when I go lower, I can’t sleep. I’ve been taking CBD oil, 5htp, and another natural pill with melatonin called best rest (I think). Have any of you gone through a similar situation or successfully come off trazadone? I think it’s affecting my memory. Any tips would be great.

Sounds like you are doing a lot of good things to get off the meds! I had very bad insomnia due to anxiety/worry, and certain physical ailments. I tried trazadone for a couple weeks, but the horrible dry mouth/throat made me quit trazadone. I switched back to one pill of Xanax .25mg, which I tapered down to less than a pill a night, some nights only 1/4 of a pill, and still take it daily, anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4 pill per day. As my sources of anxiety have decreased, my sleep has improved. One thing that helps greatly, is playing sleep meditation CD's at low volume, and having white noise from a fan etc. in the room. Some nights the CD's allow me to fall asleep for hours, and if I awake, and have trouble falling back asleep, that is when I take a piece of my Xanax pill. I believe anxiety/worry is the biggest source of my sleep issues, and that needs to always be addressed. You have to be careful with Xanax, since it is addictive. That is why I keep usage under 1 pill daily, when at all possible.

I can fall asleep on 1/4 of a .1mg Xanax but scared to continue that route. I’m sure I’ll get addicted quickly & need more. What cd do you listen to?

I would rather be addicted to Xanax, than suffer the side effects of the other drugs I tried and discontinued. As far as sleep aids, the best CD's for me have been: "Your Present: A Half Hour of Peace" by Susie Mantrell, "Deep Sleep" by Andrew Johnson, and when I awaken from those CD's, I play a background
CD called "Delta Sleep System" by Dr Jeffery Thompson. But I caution what works for me, may not work for you. I suggest you sample CD's if possible, at Amazon, to see if you like them. I use a cheap stereo system with a speaker on both sides of my bed, or they suggest using a stereo headphone for best results. Adjust volume to your taste! (I like it where it is just loud enough to hear.)

I use a sound machine (white noise) and also a diffuser with lavender in it. Sometimes I rub the lavender oil on my palms. On nights when I still can't sleep I use my meditation CDs on volume just loud enough to hear. I take no medication that is specifically for sleep. I am tapering my clonazepam presently and insomnia can be a real problem. But it won't be much longer and my clonazepam will be a thing of the past. As I near the end though, I find my anxiety and insomnia have ramped up! Good luck to everyone trying to get some sleep. Bless you all for being here.

@falon- Falon you bring up an interesting phenomena. One of the things that made me very anxious was when I was nearing my last tranquilizer. I didn't realize it at the time but I was anxious about what it would be like without it. As any smoker will tell you too, and I was. I had problems sleeping and eating in anticipating the end. But life doesn't like a vacuum and soon other things take up your time and you feel so great! This just a thought.

Yes I’m trying not to be anxious about having the trazadone for sleep any longer but I’m afraid it has ruined my brains ability to naturally fall asleep. I hope not!
