Thinking of training for 5k

Posted by ihatediabetes @ihatediabetes, Jul 18, 2018

Hi everyone, I have been off connect for awhile. Got email invite from Colleen to engage on connect. Well I have become an expert uber driver since have been gone. Its nice to get out and make airports runs and other trips. Keeps me busy. Well I have been thinking of training for a 5k. The Twin Cities Marathon is a few months away and there are shorter races the day before the marathon. There are half mile, mile, 5k, and 10k races. So I have been playing with the idea of running the 1 mile or 5k race. I have never run a real race before. But I am thinking about it.

Food for training. Yum. Not hard to eat like this. Got this from whole foods store.

This is women's gym I belong to. They change my program every 12 visits. Mayo sports medicine said they won't touch a thing with resistance training.

It looks impressive. Why no resistance training at Mayo?

I am doing resistance training. I go to women's club. They said keep doing what I am doing. Its 12 visits through a program. Then you meet with trainer and they give you new program.

I hope to be moving soon to a place very near a gym where they offer free training for cancer patients or survivors. My legs are quite strong but my arms and back not so. I think my cardiovascular fitness is okay - I can walk up hills and steps quite easily but I am looking forward to a gym programme.

I am pretty sore after my training today. I think I was in the club like 1and half hours. But at least I don't have to train tomorrow.

You must be superfit. I like the worthy tiredness after lots of exercise.

@ihatediabetes You will do great for your 5k! How many weeks before your race? I love to run but haven't been able to as of recent due to an injury and other circumstances (not related to running). For running I follow the Jeff Galloway method (Google his name and you will find books etc..). I run intervals 3 - 4 minutes walk 1 minute. The 1 min. is for my body to recover. I've run 5k, 12k, half marathons, marathon relay and one marathon. Based on your 'name' I'm guessing you have diabetes? Type 1 or 2 and how do to manage your blood sugar right before, during and after your workout? I have a friend who's type 1 so I'm familiar with what she has to do during a competition.

No I am not super fit. I am too heavy and I have sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes. But I am getting in better shape. They let me do this return to running program because I have been going to healthy living center for year and half and my assessments are better each time. I can max leg press 450 pounds- I need that to run and my weight. Plus I don't have cardiovascular disease, spine or breathing problems. They really do consider a patient's health. So I am cleared to train for 5k in return to running beginners program.
