Do the headphones really work? Or is it a toss up?

@artist01 It's my belief that I suffer from recruitment, but so far have only associated it with my hearing problems. It would be nice if the hearing industry researched/understood recruitment. The only prescription I've been offered are "hearing aids" to make sound LOUDER. Have just purchased ear protectors to reduce noise, but can't understand anyone speaking with a mask on. Anyhow, never associated recruitment with tinnitus. Mine fluctuates with my diet - salt, food allergies.

@leonard ... i was born in uk and lived in outskirts of London; my mum was born in very poor circumstances down by the docks on River Thames... i wish i had asked her about her life more before i left and came to Canada at 18... i had visits with her after but never asked her about it. her dad died in early 20s leaving his wife to raise 4 children on her own almost starving while she scrubbed floors and did laundry. once a week they heated up water on stove to put in tin bathtub and the FIVE of them, from youngest to older took a turn having a bath in the same water... could not afford to heat more water.... and so on. And we complain because theres nothing on tv we are interested in.....All four children grew up with basic eduction,worked and had families and, main thing; were happy!!! my parents never complained .... well util mum got alzheimers and her personality changed... Husand and i are not travellers but went to san francisco 3 times as girls working there; once 2 weeks after 9-11...that day one daughter was at san fran airport waiting for plane to toronto.... as millions of others, will never forget that day. We loved SAn Fancisco.... only other place we were Florida and twice los Vegas for weekend.
Canada has plenty of room for a lot more people but people want to go to the larger cities of course where there is employment and entertainment. Winters would be ok if not so darn long.... now i have forgotten the medical reason for my chat..... oh yes, Dad had ear issues but i was living over here and dont know what he did to help himself... i do know a quick story; he bought some very cheap eye glasses while on holiday by the Sea, after was having major issues and falling etc. i don't know how long it was before they discovered that the right lens had been put in the left side of glasses and vice versa... true story! poor Dad!

....yes @joyces i have been in bed resting and tinnitus and heard deep in my brain i guess some big band music; another time heard faint voices like the commentators at a horserace.... here comes Betsy Boo around the corner, followed by Aint yur Baby, etc. etc. I diont think i am going insane but ........ j.

Lacy, just another example of nature attempting to fill the void of silence. The strange thing is that, like your horse race, some things are from what you actually heard decades earlier, have forgotten entirely. I don't know quite how to separate this strange event from thinking you hear things that you possibly could be hearing, like the dishwasher running, for example. I know that I need to listen carefully to hear the various household machines doing their jobs, and sometimes I swear they're running, but, when I feel their sides, they obviously aren't. I've heard marching bands from long ago.

Along with recruitment (which may be part of this strangeness), is the fact that it's possible to have a vertigo crisis simply from hearing too much sound. For example, while my daughter was in college, I went to a concert which had the 1812 Overture as the final number. (That's the one that can have cannons, or at least lots of action from the percussion section.) I stumbled out, weaving toward my car, bumping into other cars in the lot, and had to lie down for an hour or more before I could drive. It was just too much noise for someone with recruitment!

@joyces and all.. Agree joyces.... I had tinnitus starting over 20 yrs ago, the odd tinkle, tap, buzz off and on but understood it and at that time hadnt had many illnesses nor medications. Over the past years, sort of changed to more of a machine noise. Around the same time, my husband bought new furance and its a two stage; so its a metal box with natural gas , or rather two boxes now as two stage, and pipes come out and run to each room in the house. The motor starts up, brings in air, heats it up and blows it out into rooms. This super duper one, if doest reach temperature on thermostat in hall, then sort of goes through it again... it is noisier than old one. Also, older furnaces reheated the air in the house then they decided to bring in fresh air from outside for combustion, etc. So there is a pipe going outside bringing in air... this is where we argue. I say that the furnace is brining in sometimes minus 20 Celcius air to have to heat up, right? So runs longer. Thing is they were building air tight houses which wasnt good for gas furnace but we have a dog and anyone iwth a dog knows you open the door to let it in and out twenty times a day, so lots of fresh air. We also bought a new double door fridge - and there was on old beer fridge in basement when bought the house. OH you are so correct. Soooo. I am woken up by one of the three noise-makers... I no longer do it often but would go down and check each fridge and the furnace.. many many times, as now, it is running and i can hear it. Sometimes, nothing is running but I hear a similar noise. Sometimes both fridges happen to be running when i put my ear to them! etc. etc. However, long story short its enough to drive someone crackers! I try to have you tube in background at night, i even use earbuds.... sometimes fall asleep and sometimes can still hear the noise. The brain is complex for sure. All i can say is it is different than when i first had tinnitus and i still wonder if it was caused by medication/ if Norflox causes periphery neuropathy, could another drug have heightened the tinnitus....I wonder..

@cinnamonkat I've had the "sound-making" hearing aid and in my opinion the "white sound" headphones would work as well or better, but it's' just a helping kind of solution, a bandaid solution you might say.
