Does CBD oil help you with your depression and/or anxiety?

Posted by lalyfa @lalyfa, Feb 24, 2018

I am curious to know if anyone has had success with CBD or Hemp oil helping with depression/anxiety? I’ve been reading a lot about it and am curious.
I've been reading about this and am very interested but would like thoughts/opinions from anyone who has actually tried it or knows someone who has. TIA

Thank you,
Laura

I'd like to suggest some supplements to those who, like me, may have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder / generalized anxiety disorder. I, too, take 60 mg Cymbalta and it helps but isn't the whole answer. I'm going to suggest supplements / activities that help me calm down and lift my mood. I'm not a doctor, so please check with yours first but, remember, MD doctors weren't trained about nutrition and supplements in med school. But, for me, these work well and may they help you, too. Ready? I suggest HIGHLY!!! - 1) Sam-e 400 mg daily, 2) Lithium Orotate (on Amazon) just 5 - 25 mg a day (experiment - it's a different form than lithium for bipolar so no lithium effects); 3) omegabrite -- omegabrite.com - A top Psychopharmacologist suggested this to me and he takes it - you can take 5 - 6 capsules of omegabrite a day and you may see miracles as I did in feeling well; 4) B Complex 100 (I suggest the tops "Solgar" brand; 5) L-methylfolate 1mg plus a day; 6) sublingual B12 (5000 mg nuggets); 7) walking; 8) sitting quietly for 5 minutes + (no tv, phone, computer). I'm not a doctor so you'd have to check in case anything conflicts with what you're taking but they're all safe, I find, and work extremely well!!! Omegabrite and Sam-e are expensive but to feel good again, isn't it worth it? Wishing us all and loved ones good health and feeling well!

Hi @lalyfa, I have been on a lot of antidepressants. Effexor, Celexa, Zoloft , Prozac, and recently Cymbalta (and a few I've forgotten) - cymbalta for fibromyalgia and depression. When I was younger in my 40's Effexor and Celexa did work but now that I am 60 and have more issues, they both caused electricity in my body. And I have enough of that so I couldn't stay on them. Cymbalta contributed to horrible insomnia. So I did a bit of research and bought some CBD oil and some gummies and I won't be buying them again. I don't think I felt any better with the oil. The gummies which run between $1 to $3 a piece may have helped w/depression a tiny tiny bit, not enough to continue to spend money on them. So overall I give the oil and gummies a zero. Everyone is different so who knows for you. And I believe they are legal in all states, but for me there was no difference on or off of them.

Oh, and as one ages, for good sleep especially, a good brand of Melatonin - 1 - 10 mg (I take about 5 mg) (Again, I'm not a doctor, just a good researcher) is crucial - from the pineal gland. Melatonin.

@stressedmesseddepressed can you tell me which brand of Sam-e you take?

REPLY

Sure, I take these - 1) NutraLife Kosher - The Original SAMe 400 Mg - 60 Tablets; and 2) "Doctor's Best" (on Amazon).

https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Support-Enteric-Tablets/dp/B004YLAXOE/ref=sr_1_4_a_ithttps://www.koshervitamins.com/NutraLife-Kosher-The-Original-SAMe-400-Mg-60-Tablets

I have no affiliation with these sites except as a customer. Sam-e you really need to get the 400 mg daily (not 200 mg) and it's not cheap but oh! so worth it. Really lifts mood !! and calms.

Before you begin taking these supplements make sure there is no contraindication with your antidepressants; e.g. no St.John's Wort, Melatonin and others.

Oh, yes, thank you; I have carefully checked all supplements for contraindications; there's no problem. I've talked to medical doctors and carefully researched all. (Not bragging but as a law school grad, I'm good at researching.) I don't touch St. John's Wort. But I get GREAT benefit from: Co Q 10, Sam-e, Omegabrite.com, Melatonin (natural - pineal gland), Lithium Orotate (about 10 mg), Ashwagandha and B100 and, because there is an issue with my MTHKR Gene mutation, I need to take the methyl form (everybody should take the methyl form only) of B12 (methycobalamin) and folate - L-methylfolate 15mg. (amazon has it). TY!

So should B-12 and folate be taken in addition to a multi vitamin?

I am a Mayo Clinic patient at Rochester but live in Ecuador. I had 20 years pmdd and had my complete hysterectomy august 2016 at the Women Clinic. I was symptoms free for 1 year post op. Now sleep and mood problems come back. I also am patient at rheumatology for an autoinmune condition. Now I am just on 3 meds zoloft, neuryl for sleep (like xanax), and plaquenil for the inflammation. I am on 3,5 prednisone weaning off gradually. I was expecting to help myself with cbd oil with 3% THC for inflamation, depression and sleep.it's legal at the 50 states and sell over the counter. Wondering if it will be therapeutic and if others are using it without harm.thanks

Hi, @lorena1egas, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. That is unfortunate that the sleep and mood problems have come back.

I have merged your post with this discussion here on CBD oil for depression and anxiety, thinking that some of the members here might have some input on your question on whether people find CBD oil therapeutic for inflammation, depression and sleep, and using it without harm.

What kinds of sleep and mood problems are you experiencing?
