Denial is not just for Egyptians
Newbie here. I have so many questions my mind is swirling. My husband has MCI and refuses to get evaluated by a neurologist. He gets angry if I even mention it. How am I supposed to just stand by and watch him get worse (which he is)!

@murkywaters Getting evaluated by a neurologist would be ideal but you cannot force him to go. Better to spend this time taking care of yourself and drawing up a list of people that you can count on, websites that will educate you on the awful disease and how it can present in it's various stages. Keep posting here on this site as many of us are experiencing the same issues and can sympathize and possibly offer some good advice. Bless you and your husband.

6 ReactionsI’m dealing with the same issues. I’ve been able so far to find time away from him at our second home, but last night he called and said he couldn’t find me, so I guess leaving him on his own for a few days is not an option anymore. He probably was drunk. He drinks too much wine on a daily basis. He gets angry when I say he shouldn’t be drinking wine. How do I deal with that????

In our case, my husband's Neuropsychologist suggested he stop drinking, and he did.
So hopefully the Doc is the bad guy strongly suggesting he stop drinking. It just adds to their confusion.
Good luck. 🌼

5 ReactionsTake care of yourself and if you have not done so yet see an attorney specializing in elderly. Sounds cold but as they progress you will be thankful you took this step early on. If your husband is in such great denial he will not be making rational decisions. My husband progression was slow as he was diagnosed with MCI over a decade ago and now is at a moderate dementia stage. When he was still "independent" he made unrational financial decisions. I had to take total control and make all those decisions. If you have children perhaps involve them to help. I understand your difficult position as in the early stage they can seem so rational but then they make total irrational choices and we think to ourselves how could they do that. It is not their fault it is the disease so we have to protect ourselves and them as best we can.

@jenniferkr - so true about taking control now. If I had reacted sooner, he would not have bought $5000 worth of non- refundable football tickets.
And you have to be diligent and sometimes sneaky.
I deflect or put off a lot of questions, comments, and “we needs” - and move on.

I firmly believe that you need to take care of yourself and take control at this point. He is just not rational enough and when he's drunk I'm assuming that he is so much worse. How lucky you are to have a second home to escape to! And yes, I would definitely involve family members if at all possible. They should understand the full ramifications of his illness. I'm so sorry and I totally empathize with your situation. Hang in there! And yes use this thread for help. We are all here and we have all been there.

5 Reactions@lkbous Yes. These new behaviors are very off-putting. Makes me want to run. Every day he seems odd and uncooperative.
